Dennis Deyoung Live In Calgary, AB July 11th

Postby Jodes » Fri Jun 23, 2006 1:36 pm

Just found this out from Pollstar

Dennis Deyoung is to play Calgary, Alberta, Canada during the Calgary Stampede, The world's largest Rodeo.

But he's not playing on the grounds where there will be 10's of thousands of people or one of the major concert halls in Calgary. He's playing a tent.

Tickets went on sale Jun 14th to the General public:

JACK FM/SUN/COWBOYS PRES
DENNIS DEYOUNG
THE MUSIC OF STYX
COWBOYS STAMPEDE TENT
826 5TH ST SW - AGE 18+
TUE JUL 11 2006 DRS 7PM

I'm like WTF?

But since he had to postpone the Edmonton show, I'll head down to Calgary for this one. At least I don't have to take any time off work!

Hopefully this one will sell more then 250 tickets!

sigh.... this has been done again and again - but here goes.

So whats the difference between this and either band playing a theme park, or a baloon festival, or some kind of county fair? Both Dennis and Styx have done these things... it's not new... and it's not out of the ordinary.

So now I say - who gives a shit. He gets paid the same amount whether he plays to a few cowpokes in cowshit land or the hard rock cafe in LA.

Ready to move on yet?

Steve Walsh from Kansas in his blog a few months ago was talking about them licensing Dust In The Wind for use in a subaru commercial and in that he talked about how as a "nostalgia" act Kansas has been forced to play what he called riskier and riskier gigs to get work, to make a living, and to put food on the table. And that Dust In The Wind was no different.

It's part of business and making money.

I used to giggle at different events where bands/artists were playing. Well, I guess I still do at some of the names - LOL

Last weekend in Rice Lake when we pulled in that parking lot, I was like O-M-G. Before, during and after the concert it didn't matter. The city closed that street and it was packed with over 4,000 people, screaming, cheering and singing to all the music, that's what mattered. Everyone having a great time!

Hey and how often is it to have a private concert for soundcheck? I don't care where in the world that was - Yowsa!!!! :D

Agigsagig.
Maybe he better leave the symph out of it.Don't think the cowboys like that too much.
Maybe a little more twang.

Ash is right. Who cares. That's what us "Styx" fans have been saying since '99. Of course, it mattered to a lot of people until Dennis started playing cow festivals and puppet shows, but hey, at least they finally caught on. lol

Jodes, go and have fun. Or don't. Dennis is getting paid either way. :)

Yeah, but there has been so much talk here about how successful he is in Canada. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems to me that Jodes is simply expressing a bit of frustration that he is supposedly so successful in Canada but has to play such a scrappy venue.

Styx and Dennis are both playing the same type of venues so to critique one but not accept the other is doing the same thing is a bit hypocritial. I have been saying that for a VERY long time here.

Guys.. you're looking to much into it. Monker nailed it right on the head actually.

I'm just a bit shocked at the "venue" he's playing in tis all. I'm just surprised that he's not playing a similar type venue on the Stampede grounds to more people. BUT yes he's at least playing here in Alberta.

And no, there's no Symphony from what I've been told!

Only question is.. Will Glen be joining him? lol

I've been told this particular place has packed concerts every night due to the stampede. I just hope that the Styx fans show up and not a whole bunch of drunken cowboys (who will hopefully be at the Stampede and at the Kenny Chesney concert that night!)

No hypocricy meant here folks, just a bit of surprise!

I agree with Ash - who cares - they are both playing the State Fair, Casino, Riverfest, etc...tours right now. The only thing that supprises me about Styx here in Michigan is that they no longer play at DTE - which is probably the most popular, and one of the largest in the State. I went to every show - and they never failed to sell out - so ticket sales is not the problem. My guess is the promoter gets too big of a chunk of the $$$$.

Dennis at the Stampede kind of makes me laugh though - I see the same kind of response (possibly) that Styx received in 81 in Houston. They were the headline act and they followed Sammy Hagar and Ted Nugent - they followed them with the Kilroy show - theatrics and all - it did NOT go over well. Dennis may want to think of dropping Roboto and some of his power ballads - Cowboys carry guns. Shit - I forgot - that's all he has is Roboto and power ballads. R.I.P. Dennis

Well, the ironic thing here is that they get to tour the same places, but Styx gets to tour these places with the Styx name to fall back on. Dennis DeYoung does not have the Styx name to fall back on - just his. I think he is doing pretty darn well to play the same type of arenas as Styx just as Dennis DeYoung solo artist. Plus, he doesn't have to split the check 6 different ways!

Just trying to stay a bit positive here as this thread appears to be bringing out the Dennis-bashers.

You have to laugh at the names of events and venues these days.

Also, Annie Dennis does tour using the "Styx" name, it is just not the headlining part of the moniker.

Suite - tell Dennis to get out the ten gallon hat and shit kickers and put the purple suit away tho.....

Well and Dennis is bigger in Canada - what does that have to do with him playing a rodeo? How do you know it's not a lot of people? Do you just assume it's a few dozzen hicks? Are you that much of a bigot against people who like rodeos? :) LOL

LMAO

Yeah.. Well maybe if Glen's there he'll wear the Cowboy hat!

Oh and Stumble, this is in Canada, so the Cowboys don't carry guns up here! :P

The guns they have are back "at the range" because of all the Gov. BS and red tape to own a weapon up here!

I'm sure all the Cowboys will be listenin to the C'boy music in other venues!

But hey after 25 years, I don't care where he's playing.. and to see Dennis twice in one year (Nov 4th is the next show), that's fine by me!

I always sort of like the smaller more intimate venues. That means more for me and the diehard fans....like the private soundcheck Suite got! It's win/win for the fans. I'm sure the bands, on the other hand, don't see it that way and would love to be back playing Pine Knob, etc.....

Stumble.. that was too funny!

Btw.. Just got confirmation from the man himself.. Glen will be joining Dennis in Calgary on July 11th.

So if anyone wants to come up to see not only this show, there will be lots of Canadian beer flowing , and of course the world's largest rodeo and the most beautiful mountains/natural areas (Banff) on the planet, I'd say.. take a week and come up!

Even though I'm from Northern Alberta, nothing beats Calgary and the mountains in the summertime!

Also if you come into Calgary a few days before, these are the following other artists playing:

July 5 Vince Neil

July 6 Dr. Hook

July 7 Defualt and Grady (Former Big Sugar guitarist Gordie Johnston)

July 8 Nelly Furtado

July 9 Sam Roberts

July 10 Theory of A Deadman

July 11th Dennis Deyoung
Buck Cherry (Different bar)

July 11th Kenny Chesney/Road Hammers

July 12th Gino Vannelli
Wide Mouth Mason

July 13 April Wine (Stampede)
Rodger Hodgson (two nights)
Chilliwack (Different bar)

July 15 Hedley
Randy Travis
Alan Jackson (Saddledome)
Blackhawk/Restless Heart/Little Texas (Casino show)

July 16 The Trews

So you definately have a LOT of country and rock talent coming through Calgary during the Stampede!

Hey Froy, remember those guys at the Roger show sitting next to me??? Those are the ones that are putting on the Stampede, I think I got them so excited about Dennis that they booked them there and I see Roger is there for 2 nights. Word of mouth is great.

Anyway, Jodes, Glen will be on the last leg of Dennis' tour, he'll be playing all the dates that aren't with an orchestra.

What song should Glen add to the show?? Anyone??? I think majority will rule!!

So like even the November 4th Edm date? If that's true.. that's SHWEET!

Songs for Glen?

Definately Edge
All In A Days Work

And one of the "Son Of Edge" demos. But I think we'll get a 90 minute DDY set, so more then likely just Edge of the Century.

From what I heard "Edge" will be part of the set list, wow, that's the best that I've ever seen him, great song, just incredible!!!

"All For Love" is added too. From what I "heard", the big man would like Glen to be more part of the show and add another song. Glen is playing guitar in every song, I love seeing/watching him up there.

I'll pass along all suggestions, hopefully more people will post suggestions :) Thank you in advance.

I'd love to go to Canada again!!! :D
