Others, however, are cringe inducing. "Hello God" had serious potential, but then you get stuff like this "Hello God, I don't mean no disrespect, but I thought I'd call collect in case you answer". The rhyme is terrible. The sentiment is trying to be funny in a serious song... Word of advice to Dennis - your best work is when you subdue your sense of humor and write lyrics that touch us in some way - Come Sail Away, Show Me The Way, Pieces of Eight, Desert Moon, Best of Times...what do all of these have in common? They don't try to be funny - They don't try to be cute. They stay on a serious topic and explore it.
Humor, in my opinion, is hard to pull off in music.

Sometimes the music is good enough to make up for it, sometimes not so much.
YES. My biggest gripe about Dennis' music has always been his lyrics. The music has rarely been an issue, IMO - he's written some dynamite pieces of music. Sometimes, he's come up with some inspiring, albeit overly simplified, words, but usually, it's leaves me kinda...cringing. lol (there's that word again, & no, that's not a dig per se, it's just an honest ongoing opinion).

That is not a horse!!!
I am thinking it is Zans way of getting at Froy.
That dog that Zan is beating is none other than Froy's old dog Chunks!!!!!

I'm Gonna Make You Feel It (OK, I know JY sang it, but Dennis wrote it)
Best Thing (I'm with Suzanne on this one, it's just an early, not-so-great effort)
First Time (Song's okay, but hate the falsetto vocal parts)
Back To Chicago (Not too bad a song, but wrong for Styx)
And for what it's worth, I really like "Great Expectations", thought the lyric was brilliant and I admire that he took a turn musically into some new areas.
