Hi Jeremey!

Just had a good listen to the boot available on Guitars101.com ... I mean, a gooood listen.

Ok you know I rate you... but this is the first time Ive been able to hear complete songs, and good quality sounboard boot.
Only previously seen/heard small clips.

I gotta say..... unbelievable man!! Blown away... by the power and control in your voice. If Perry had, what people say, was the greatest voice in rock n roll... how does it feel, for you to now have the greatest voice in rock n roll?? (this presumes that Perry could no longer do some of those songs justice, in the orig keys) ?? I do not notice any discernable difference in your delivery, to that of Perry himself.. and I find that utterly remarkable. !!!!!

Hey man, thanks for asking...of course there's a lot better singers out there than I am (and others who probably sound more like Perry than I do), but here's some answers for you...

When did u first realise you "sounded alike"??

2 of my greatest influences as a singer were Rob Halford and Terrence Trent D'Arby. (At the risk of sounding like JSS:) I guess it was natural that developing my voice in that way would give to a more powerful & aggressive style of singing, while at the same time Terrence was like no one I had ever heard before, from a tonal and phrasing standpoint. I didn't consciously pay attention to Steve Perry until I was in college. The day I met my wife, we sat down in a piano practice room in the music school we went to, and she played "Open Arms." I was just singing the song and she stopped playing and said "Sing it seriously - In your own voice!" I had no idea what she was talking about, but that was the time I guess I realized my natural voice was just very much like Steve Perry's. I later became a huge Perry fan, when I realized he embodied the heavier style of a Halford and the subtle r&b influences of TTD.

I am 35. This was about the time of Frontiers for Perry, I think....My voice has been abused for many years through smoking, drinking, partying, and working a job as a salesperson, where I talk nonstop. So I wouldn't imagine my voice would age any more gracefully than Perry's has. I can no longer do the altissimo things Perry did on stuff like Sweet & Simple and Lay It Down, but my natural head voice and range has expanded over the past several years, thanks to singing all the time, I guess...My singing voice isn't my livelihood, so unfortunately I haven't had the ability to protect it as much as I would have over the past 5 years or so.

Finally... Is any of your tribute stuff available to download or purchase?? If so.. please pm me the details.

Well, any stuff we have for download is on the website or YouTube. We don't have anything for sale. At one point we tried selling DVDs of our Jefferson Center concert, which took me personally days and days to edit and manufacture, but releasing it was (unbeknownst to me at the time) illegal, and thanks to some pissy schoolgirls out there, I was harassed by Schon & Cain's publishing company for several months, thinking for some reason I had reaped a fortune in DVD sales.

Any way, Neil, thanks for asking! Always fun to talk about oneself every now and then....

OMG, Jeremey - it seems we pretty much share the same musical influences!

You already know I like TTD but I absolutely love Halford in Priest and particulary on his solo releases - Resurrection, Live Insurrection and Crucible. Listening to Rob completely got me into singing and I am pleased to say I do a pretty mean Electric Eye/Metal Gods combo! I saw Priest in concert after they reformed with Rob and was blown away by the power of his voice. I swear at times I thought he was going to explode, he was like an air raid siren!

I would love to hear you do a Priest number, do you have anything recorded and what do you think of Tim 'Ripper' Owens?

Now if only you liked King Diamond...

He does like King Diamond. Dressed up as him one time if I remember correctly.

I remember the VH1 show with the 100 greatest hard rock artists and Sebastian Bach mentioned seeing Priest in the 80s and when Halford sang, it sounded like the PA was going to explode.

Ah, Sebastian Bach - another great vocalist. His work on the Frameshift album An Absence of Empathy is superb.

I remember Seb and Halford singing together at one point and after letting out one of his trademark screams Seb said something along the lines of 'Holy sh!t Houston, did you hear that'?!!? :lol:

Have you heard the song "Dreamer/Deceiver" off the "Sad Wings of Destiny" album. Holy crap, Batman! He pulls off some incredible stuff there. He almost sounds like three different singers through the course of that song. :shock:

I heard the boot too and I have only one critique with it. Please, slow some of the songs down! You guys were playing some of them so fast it felt like the feel was being umm.... pulled out from under it. That must make it way harder for you in between verses ! I never understood why journey did Wheel in the sky so fast live. I think it ruins it. Hope to see you guys live someday.

Dreamer Deceiver...wow. I have never in my life heard ANYONE...man, woman, or Mariah, with that much range in their voice. The lows are so low and the highs are ear-ringing. Incredibly haunting song too...very cool.

Sad Wings of Destiny - Dreamer/Deceiver - That used to be my "vocal workout" when I would come home from 9th grade every day and have a couple hours before the parents came home!! "We are lost above! Floating way up high!!" Have you seen the video from it, from the BBC? I believe it was from before Rob got dentures! :shock:

Hey man - I agree, some of the songs are very rushed, but not as rushed as I've heard Journey perform them at times. I think it is adrenaline, and being on stage that pushes the music faster....Also, some have said it's easier to sing faster. Not so. It's just as tough to sing fast as it is slow. It's all about breathing. When we come on and open with Separate Ways at 180 BPM, I am TOAST by the end of the song!

I don't get wasted before shows, or pretty much any other time these days. The Clarendon was a 5-6 drink night over the course of 6 hours or so, which is about my limit typically. When I was in cover bands, I would drink just to make it through the gigs. We made a conscious decision to cut back on drinks when we started Frontiers, and we keep it that way, for the most part.

I've got the "Electric Eye" DVD, which includes a live show from their '86 tour and a few videos, one of which is the BBC "Dreamer/Deceiver". Rob looked terrible with the long hair. Anyway, the only way I could hit the high notes in that song is to lose about 100 pounds and become a eunuch.

Interesting you say Terence Trent Derby.... as a couple years ago, I was listening to the radio, and a track of his was already on... I was convinced it was a new number by Steve Perry..his voice is so similar in timbre!!

All I can say is keep on keepin on man.... oh, and I do agree with someone who said that a couple of the songs are really "racing" along at times... makes it harder for you I would think...still...goes to prove that you havent got any backing vocals synched to a click track...

My band Talisman did a cover of his back in '94, the song 'To Know Someone Deeply...', I always felt I could have sung it so much better as it was a rushed last minute add on & I was leaving for the airport back to the US from Sweden within hours so I kinda cruised through it thinking 'it'll be fine'. Wow! that was a great cover even with the time restrictions. I mentioned in another thread that I thought TTD sounded like a cross between yourself and Steve Perry. Great stuff!

Hey Jeff, GREAT tune! Your voice sounds great on there - your falsetto channels TTD perfectly. Interesting choice for a cover for a melodic hard rock band, I love the versatility. Sounds awesome. Looking forward to checking out the new Talisman in a few weeks!

There are a few who can attempt Steve Perry vocals, but you are sincerely one that does so while keeping it real....and that is virtually impossible.
