First of all, yes, it is the butt of many jokes and may be “goofed on” a time or two, but most people look upon it fondly. It has had three treatments on VH1. The other two (True Spin and I Love the 80’s) were very affectionate and positive towards it. I did not get the feeling it was lumped in with the “stupid songs” of the 80’s, but that is all in one’s perspective.
DENNIS most certainly recognizes a number of things about this song: That it is made fun of often ( which he will also participate in with great good humor) That it is a techno prototype. That it was FAR ahead of its time. That people regard it with great affection (for which Dennis has carried a lot of money to the bank). That it is one of the most popular songs at his concerts. That kids love it and it brings them to his other music as a consequence.
“Mr. Roboto” has been in several movies. It was the centerpiece of one of the best commercials ever (and was also honored so on VH1’s 25 Greatest Commercials). Most recently it was featured quite positively on the Oct. 22nd episode of “My Name is Earl.”
When Dennis and Hal Sparks sang it on “Celebrity Duets” it got the highest compliments being called, by many, the best moment on that series and, by some, one of the best moments on television this past year. Again, bringing more people to the music of Styx.
Does this song “bring Styx down.” I do not think it does and, apparently, Dennis is happy with its treatment in the years since it was written and recorded.
He most certainly has fun with it at his concerts. And, as he said on VH1 “…I am just pleased it has made so many people happy.” I, for one, thank you very much, Mr. DeYoung.
