Just my opinion

Dennis pretty much produced all of Styx albums before he departed from the band. He probably had a hand in producing his own orchestra show, which you can clearly here the orchestra.

If he was apart of the CYO show or did a show with the CYO, he would give those teenagers there "missed opportunity" that they didn't get with this show.

I noticed that Lorelie also sounded good which surprised me. I haven't gotten through the entire dvd yet though. Ummm, Jy needs to do a bit less botox. Looks like Tim Allen in Christmas with the Cranks.

I would tend to agree. Dennis is a good producer. Someone in this post mentioned earlier that they possibly mic'd everything not as well as they could have, and maybe they paid for it in the final mix. I would tend to agree.

If you watch the dvd, there are mics everywhere.

The tell tale sign is the differenced between the dvd and the cd. Both use the same recording, but sound very different. It should tell you that the problem wasn't in the recording of the show but in the way they were mixed.

I am no means a producer, I can video something and edit it in Premier and what not, and it looks good to me.

When they record the show and each microphone is recorded onto his on tape or real, can't you boost or lower the volume after it has been recorded, I know you can do it in premeir. Say boost the Orchestra mics in the software, and lower the volume coming from Tommy, Jy's and Ricky's Amp output in the software in post production?

exactly. you can control each microphone in the mix.

It makes no sense that the cd and the dvd are so different. A little different based on the place you are expected to listen to it, but not as different as they both are. They are like two completely different shows using the same recording "tapes".

They could have also fixed the mix on the dvd as well to bring the Orchestra out front more. The show was more for the teenagers more that it was for them.

Just because there are a bunch of mics in view doesn't mean it was done right. Mic placement is huge. There is an awful that can go wrong with recording a live show. I have a hunch that the source material is playing a part in how the cd and DVD sounds.

my point wsn't that the source could have issues, my point was that the 2 varying mixes come from the same mics.

I watched the entire thing last night. Except for Young's caterwalling on Miss America, I thought it was a great show. I liked it a lot. One of the better live DVDs out there.

I have listened to 3 distinct mixes of the same performance.

The CD has the band upfront with the orchestra way in the background.

The DVD is very well balanced between band and orchestra.

The HDNet program has the orchestra and vocals way upfront with the rest of the band in the background.

Depending on your preference, each mix has it's merits. I prefer the DVD. But I would think members of the CYO might get a kick out of the HDNet version.

Has the program been shown on Public Television yet? I am curious to hear what version they play. My guess is it will be the same as the HDNet version.

CYO CD Comments

Postby brywool » Sun Jan 14, 2007 5:28 am

Okay, so I was having trouble with Itunes. Everytime I'd burn a CD, it'd F' up and crash my computer.
I uninstalled it and reinstalled a new version to try that.
To test it, I needed to burn a CD with Itunes on it. I didn't have anything I was really jazzed about burning
on my system SO I downloaded the CYO album. I've already got the DVD release, but it's cool to listen to stuff while
driving, etc. so I wanted a CD of it. Anyway, I downloaded it.

Let me say this- I LOVE the 2 new tracks. I know some here are kind of blase' about them, but I think they're
great tracks. Maybe not for 'hit singles' but I don't listen to Styx for that (note to "Babe" fans, I never have).
The 2 new tracks have great lyrics and I personally LIKE the kind of spacey vibe of "Just Be" for a change.
That doesn't mean that "Everything All the Time" isn't everything I want in a Styx track, cuz, it is. I love
this song. Reminds me a bit of "Everything's Cool" which is a VERY underrated Styx tune. EATT ROCKS.
The CD sounds a bit different than the DVD mix (and I haven't listened to all of it yet) but some of it's much
better mixed, some of it sounds like the DVD at first listen.

I also have to say, TOMMY. JY:
While Styx is a great great band (in any incarnation),
there were a bunch of songs in that show that haven't been released live yet and I was greatly dissapointed that these weren't part of the CD.

"I Don't Need No Doctor" was one of the highlights of that show. It absolutely rocked and the audience and
kids in the CYO and Chorus were CLEARLY digging it on the DVD. Where the hell is it on the CD???? You had to cut that to make
room for "Blue Collar Man (again)"???

Also, while "Miss America" had a great intro, after that, it was all the same. Jeez, if you want to feature a great
JY vocal, either throw in "Great White Hope" or better yet "You Need Love". THAT would rock and it would give
YOUR DIEHARD FANS something they haven't heard in a LONNNNNGGGGG time. It would mean I'd spin the
CYO album more than I probably will (and I like this album by the way).

Your're not making THAT many new young fans (no offense, it's
just the age of liposuctionedmodellingprettytolookatrapblacknonrocknroll music). So if you're playing to your
established fans, they want to hear new stuff on record. This means NEW live versions of some unreleased live
studio tunes. The 2 Christmas songs for the DVD- Where the hell are those? Gowan's tune was great
and the other one was good too.

I personally LOVE live albums. Always have. Journey, McCartney, Frampton, Cheap Trick have all released live albums that I really dig.
I love to hear the audience on the tracks. I also like to hear what
the band does to the tracks live. HOWEVER- You can't keep basically releasing the same live album over and
over again.

Anyway, sorry to bitch, but I just don't get why the band refuses to take chances and trust not just the old material, but the new stuff too.
I'd think that this would be equally frustrating to the Gowan, Burtnik, Sucherman, Phillips parts of the band too. Could you imagine being
Gowan and hearing "Hey, we're not going to put 2 of your songs on the new album because we'd like to release Blue Collar Man and Miss
America again. It's a rule that they have to be on EVERY live album. Sorry".

I still bought the album. I still like the album (and the CYO concept was great), but I'd like to hear the stuff that hasn't already been released live a bunch of times already. Since they're not on the CYO album, why don't you make the leftover tracks available for download either
through your site or Itunes?
That'd rock. Everybody's happy.

Also, I think it's lame that they chose to cut out the introduction of the kid that was playing the violin blues licks for the CD version. That was a killer part of the song.

Yeah, always something to bitch about...
By the way, the new tracks are great.

Booklet???

Postby brywool » Tue Jan 23, 2007 7:08 am

As I mentioned in my previous post (which was hella long, sorry!) I downloaded the album from Itunes.

Was there anything else in the CD booklet besides the cover? Usually Itunes has digital booklets with their stuff, but only cover came with this one. Was there actually a book on the physical release? Thanks.
