Saw this on youtube. Says it is from the Atlanta Show. It is not the full thing, just 5 mins of it.

A few things to look at..

End of Jy's Guitar (something hanging :))
Ricky in what looks like an old grandma's hat.

Still gets me a bit chuffed. Play one or two whole songs instead of a medley. It doesn't appear that "Put Me On" would be a big stretch. "Shooz" would be awesome. Even "Heavy Metal Poisoning" would be nice - oh, but it comes from Kilroy. JY's high voice isn't what it used to be, though. It's more falsetto than power these days.

Oh, bitchmoanwhine...wah.

They ADDED the medley because so many die hard fans were complaing that they weren't doing enough "deep cuts" and only hits. Of course, everyone has their favorites, so the requests were astronomical, and they couldn't possibly play everything the fans wanted to hear. So Todd, a STYX FAN himself, wrote the medley FOR US. And what do we do? Complain.

No wonder they don't give a sh*t.

And not 30 seconds of the song.
The medley sounds terrible
Todds a great drummer but not on this piece of crap
the songs dont even blend together correctly
Go ahead stick up for this lame attempt of STYX nobody cares anymore
I love how JY has panties on his guitar gee thats like real mature.

"Played live the way they were supposed to be played?" I think they stick pretty close to the original tunes, unluck many other bands who go the other way and change many parts. If the drummer, being Todd here, wants to spruce it up some, I am all for it. John played some pretty basic stuff, especially his later years and I think Todd adds a lot. Would i rather hear these songs as complete songs? Of course, but then again, they are not playing 3 hour shows where we will ever hear these. I'll take 30 second snippets over not hearing them at all any day.

By saying this.."Sad to see a once great band making fools of themselves" you admit this incarnation is still Styx.

If you don't like Styx, why do you spend so much time here? All you ever do is bitch about them. I guess you would've rather they completely went away. The songs blend together wonderfully. Todd plays the shit out of these. ANYTHING sounds terrible on YouTube. Put in the CYO video and watch it. Then watch the Quake Cam extra's for more of Todd. Phenomenal player. Thrice the Drummer Johnny was.

God, whine whine whine. How do the regulars on the board stand it? I remember on the google board there was someone there totally would piss and moan about anything non-Dennis. i think it's the same guy.

I agree with Froy about medleys.........

BUT........... I enjoy the hell out of this one.

I only wish that it were longer.

Todd proves on this, that he is FAAAAARRRRRRRRRR & AAAAAAAAWWWWWWAAAYYYYY the GREATEST drummer around today.

JY also sounds pretty damn good on Put Me On. Actually he sounds rrreeeaaalll rrreeeaaallll good.

Maybe, just maybe putting your foot in your mouth and shoving your head up your ass helps ones voice.

If anyone out there is a doctor or knows one fairly well maybe you could ask him about this head up the ass/foot in the mouth question.

I've proposed here reasonable set lists where they could take care of Joe Sixpack who only owns GH and also the die hards. I'm more than fine with them having to play the hits - it pays the bills. That's not my gripe. Medleys don't satisfy most die-hards (see: Rush). For the folks who love to hear the same stuff all the time - including the medley - go nuts.

I'd rather see them rotate 4 songs in the same slot every night (for example, play 2 of the 4 songs or whatever) to keep it fresh for them and add *somewhat* of an element of surprise. At this point, it's going to take more than a medley to get me to see them. I saw them do it once. It was great. I'm just sick of seeing the same damn show I've seen live since 1990 pretty much.

And for the record, Todd didn't write it. He arranged it and he's arguably the best all-around musician currently in Styx right next to Tommy. It's good - don't get me wrong - but it's not enough to get this die hard to ante up $50 to see them anymore. They've got to do more than that. I won't probably see them again until there's a full new studio album and I'll get 4 - 5 new tunes.

This is one case they can learn from DDY - if they did something a la the "Lost Treasures" concerts occasionally where they would do basically the same set with a few full-length chestnuts, I'd be there even w/o new material.

Medleys being satisfying or not is a matter of taste, of course. I happen to like them in general. I really dig new arrangements and unexpected segues. Unfortunately, this particular piece has become pretty much as stale as the rest of the set list because they haven't substantially changed it in years. You mention Rush -- they've been doing medleys of their tunes for ages, but they change up the content on each tour to keep it fresh. Queen also did that back in the day.

I agree that a lost treasures type show would be cool, I'd go. Although, I don't recall DDY's LT shows to have a whole plethora of Lost treasures, either. Seems to em there was 4 or 5 in amongst the usual Babe, Lady, and Grand Illusions. A TRUE LT show would be exceptional.

Well Styx had the right idea in 99 when they first hit the road.

2.5 hour shows with a lot of the "deep cuts" in it: Man In The Wilderness, Queen Of Spades, Half Penny Two Penny, and then the unplugged set.

Hell even in 2000/2001 they were still adding songs to the setlist like Sing For The Day, Love Is The Ritual.

2002 saw no real changes to the setlist.

At least in 03 we got 3-4 tracks from Cyclorama a night which "shuffled up the dirty 13" nightly.

04 - nothing new.

05- well we got covers, but nothing really "new" unless you consider they did "Boat On The River" in Europe.

Sadly, most of their fans want to hear the hits, and Dennis knows this too. It's why he has his fixed setlist as well..

My good friend Froy is even bored with DDY's setlist for the same reason, becuase he does the tracks that were hits, and the odd deep cut (Light up and Pieces of Eight)

Face it folks.. we're never happy with anything Dennis or Styx does now.. (well I was thrilled I got to see Dennis twice in one year, but that's just me lol)

What kinda fans does that make us? lol

Now I'm gonna go have another drink lol

i dunno- i've seen glen in some frightening outfits as well... anybody remember the plaid pants? :::cringe::: somebody call What Not To Wear!

as far as bass playing is concerned, i'll take Styx 5.0 (ts, jy, gb, ts, lg) or 5.1 (the occasional chuck plug in) over the current 6.0 (ts, jy, rp, ts, lg). ;) Ricky is ok.... i just find that Styx w/o Glen just isn't as exciting...

As a bass player myself, I tend to agree. I saw Styx a lot with Glen. Not so much after. There's a definite lack of stage presence that is now missing. The times I've seen them w/o Glen, I've concentrated more on Todd since he's not only entertaining to watch, but a great drummer.

I'm not saying Ricky is a bad bass player - he's not. Clearly with the gigs he's had over the years he's pretty good. Some of what he has done bothers me and has changed the feel of some tunes in parts (and not for the good). An example is BCM. He plays pretty much straight whole notes under the verses instead of the dotted quarter/eighth note pattern which gives it some bounce and swagger, and then quarter notes in the chorus.

I'll take 4 - 5 plus what I expect vs. none. In a 70 - 90 minute show, it's damn near impossible. They'd need to go back to the "Evening With ..." format, which would mean they'd be playing smaller venues on their own.

I'll even take it a step further: get off the freakin' road. Make people miss you and add to your value, not subtract. I think the setlist would be more tolerable if I didn't have the opportunity in any given year to see them multiple times. I'm looking forward to a Shaw/Blades show more than I am seeing either DDY or Styx at this point. Maybe Styx should take a page from the Journey playbook at this point - ignore the US live, record an album, and come back in '08. Show me what you can do with this new lineup more than the two new and mediocre songs you delivered on OWE.

Rush did the same thing a few years back - they played Hartford, Mansfield, and then later Boston. I saw them in Mansfield and then Boston, and I was pretty much bored in Boston because they didn't swap up anything for that last (and short) indoor leg of the tour. At least Rush goes away and comes back every few years.

Yes. As well as the point of every other fan who has constructed a fantasy set list for the band over the years. Hence, my original point that they can't please everyone, therefore, they did a medley.

Zan wrote:I agree that a lost treasures type show would be cool, I'd go. Although, I don't recall DDY's LT shows to have a whole plethora of Lost treasures, either. Seems to em there was 4 or 5 in amongst the usual Babe, Lady, and Grand Illusions. A TRUE LT show would be exceptional.

Which means = a fiscal loss. Cost too much in production, brings in less revenue, puts more strain of the voices of those trying to save them.

Well, "mediocre" is definitely an opinion, and one I do not share. I think the two new songs are great, especially "Just Be," which is musical brilliance, as far as I'm concerned. The harmonies are dead-on, the message is good, the music is solid. Moan if you will about the pace of the song, but I love it.

And, forgive me for saying so, but if Styx were to borrow a page from Journey's play book, they could LIP-SYNC a 2 hour set of Lost Treasures and save a BOATLOAD of money!

I agree about Shaw-Blades, tho. I hope they make it down this direction, but I won't hold my breath.

I do wish they would extend some of the songs in the medley. To say you have a song in there when all you play is ten to twenty seconds of it is kinda weak. Play a verse and a chorus at least. It may mean they cut some songs out, but the brevity of some of the songs is disingenuine.

I didn't start seeing Styx until 77- I only heard Mademoiselle once live. Never got to hear Put Me On, Shooz or Ballerina.
I think I only heard Midnight Ride and Born For Adventure live once too.
I'm just happy to hear any bit of these songs now. I don't think they can play those deep cuts and retain anybody's interest
save the hard core fans like us. If they played Mademoiselle live, people wouldn't know what the F is was.
Same with Put Me On and Shooz. Sad, but I think the masses would rather hear Mr. Roboto than those obscure tracks which
are much better songs.

Speaking of "deep live cuts" are there any good sounding boots of the Crystal Ball or Equinox tours? I've got one somewhere
where they play "Born for Adventure" (great Dennis tune) and "Mademoiselle" and (I think) "22 Years", but the sound quality is
really bad. Does anything out there exist that's good quality?

Bry, I have a King Biscuit Flower hour 5 song Equinox set from 75 from Providence. That's about the only good sounding boot I have from that tour.

The show I have from Toronto 76 is so-so, then I have great sounding shows from 77, 78, & 79/80.

If you don't have it, pm me and I'll find a way to get it to you.

Put Me On and Shooz - current fans would know that go to the shows. (Only major part missing is the slow part that Dennis sang.

Put Me On bookend the Medley and Shooz is in the medley for an extended time compared to other songs in it.

Hey Zan,

The two new songs have grown on me as well although the guitar riff in Just Be resembles the sax part in a Wham song. lol

I can hear the bass on the DVD pretty well. I do have a nice subwoofer though. I'd wager my downstairs neighbors hate my sub. hahaha
