I went to that 1997 show 3 times, but since it was never released as a DVD that was the first time I had seen it in almost 10 years. I went to the 1996 show 11 times. I Spent some cash that year!
Sorry Gowen fans, but THAT WAS STYX. No offense, but nothing else comes close. Tommy and Dennis belong together.
Now, I am going to log off, turn off the lights, and fall asleep with my boombox blaring the greatest album ever recorded........................................released on 7/7/77, the Grand Illusion.

but wait...isn't he already coming back? after all, on the "reunion rumblings" thread you said
"Im hearing 40 date summer tour." and "Look for
Dennis Glen Tommy JY and Todd real soon
Gowan is gone."
which is it? is the reunion a done deal, or are they going to "beg dennis to come back?"
why would they beg dennis to come back for a tour that you're sure is already in motion? hmmm.....

This is how the song is supposed to be played
This version shows why Styx needs Dennis back in the fold
Together as one
Current Styx has heard The new Dennis cd
and there begging him to come back.
full screen is best to watch these
hit the box in the lower part of the screen

I saw this tour. GREAT show, the highlights for me were "Dear John" and the accapella "Show Me The Way". I found both of these songs really moving and I've never got that much 'choke-factor' from Styx. Really great versions. I totally FORGOT they played "The Grande Finale" at the end of "Come Sail Away". I remember this was a way better concert than Return to Paradise.
Having said that, I DON'T miss:
-"WE HAD DREAMS!!" during Come Sail Away. It interrupts a terrific song and to say it at EVERY show since 1983 bugs borders on annoying not to mention "Vegas". Dennis' stage banter always comes across as too rehearsed. That's probably just my vibe.
- Same with the speech before "Grand Illusion". Same since 1977.
- Dennis' dancing
- Babe
- The 'staged' feel of everything in a Styx show, though I loved the lighting. The band just seemed so wooden (nickel), but the stage was always cool.
- Dennis' white shoes, looks like Pat Boone.
- JYs dopey-ass perm. What was he thinking?
- So many slow songs in a rock setting
I DO miss:
- The bottom end of Dennis' voice (and I LIKE Gowan quite a bit). I love DeYoung, but I really like Gowan's energy and keyboard playing more.
- A Clean shaven Shaw.
Thanks for sharing this. Any chance this'll be posted as an entire show on g101 or somewhere?

The white shoes and even the jacket Dennis wears looks foolish IMO
I will post that so you can see it but they break out of boxes which is even more foolish,
- Dennis' dancing
brywool wrote:"Staging" I like, but a canned feel, I don't.
Staging and props were big reasons why the Rock Press continually pissed on them.
Also, I would hazzard a guess that MOST people that are seeing Styx or Dennis now ARE seeing them for the bazillionth time and the band should work up new banter.
[/quote]I would hazzard a guess that most who are seeing them now are looking for a sense of nostalgia. Interspersed with that crowd would be die hard fans...certainly not the majority going to see them.
Styx has always been staged. Period.

At a Styx show you would get (DDY years) "The Best of Times" and "Babe" for sure. I don't consider "Lady" a ballad. You got "Don't Let It End" in 1983. "Show Me The Way" a couple of times. But Styx really doesn't slow down the set that much, even with DDY.
