This is, I believe, the last date of the Paradise Theatre tour, or certainly one of the last dates. It was from Japanese TV, and there are some really interesting things to watch for in it. First of all, Tommy was either sick that night, or hammered . . . he really doesn't look good, and he plays well below par in this show. Especially the solo on CSA, it's the worst I've ever heard him play it - amateurish, almost - but he plays badly on a few other things as well. The other thing is, why does Dennis shave at the end of this?! He has a moustache, and then he goes back and, before they come out for HPTP, he shaves and comes back out without it. I've always wondered what the hell that was all about, LOL.

Overall this is actually an interesting look at that era, but to my mind at least, the band played a lot better and sang a lot better on the Return To Paradise re-staging of this same show. At this point their offstage problems were already starting to affect them and I think it shows in the performances. Just my two cents!

I hope all is well.

Sterling, I agree with you about the band sounding better during Return to Paradise.
I've seen every show since Crystal Ball, and I have always thought they were great live,
but in 1996 and 1997 they just sounded fantastic. Better than ever, in my opinion.

According to the dates I have, it was the last show.

Maybe they were at the point that they had just had enough of the tour.

THe shaving cuts are in the Half Penny clip that is loading now. It's very weird. Must have made a statement somewhere that he wasn;t going to shave the moustache until after the last show.

I always thought Dennis was hotter than a firecracker on this show. And the Japanese girls really were screaming for him. This was the show where he leaps to the top of the piano. I couldn't believe he did that. I guess he felt like, last show, why not?

Tommy didn't look well, I agree. He was sweating profusely and looked very, very pale.

Thanks for putting that one up, NH!

I think the mustache shave has something to do with the Journey 'Faithfully' video.

Either Dennis copied Steve, or my bet is that later it was Steve that copied Dennis.

P.S. Tommy looked so terrible because the night before Dennis had come up with the Kilroy concept. Suzzanne had sketched out Dennis's Roboto costume and Tommy's Jonathan Chance attire. Right before the stage sweep,(Paradise Theatre opening) Dennis showed Tommy their next concert tour gig. Tommy was visably shook because of this.

AMEN! And I thought the comment was funny, but EVERY thread turns into this junk. What a waste.

So on the video, any chance of posting the entire show in a downloadable, burnable format on G101 or something? I'd love to have this on DVD.

Actually there's a shred of truth to this. From what I know and I think DDY talks about it in one of my interviews, he started demoing Kilroy while in Japan. I think on tour Tommy pleaded for not another concept album to Derek Sutton. Tommy started demoing GWG during the PT tour of the UK.

So Yogi may have been kidding, but Kilroy was already in the works by 1982.

I wish the full concert was released. It *is* floating out there. I have a non-soundboard of the whole show which is well over 2 hours.

Actually you can hear DDY say "Domo Arigato" at the end of CSA, I think. But yes, Derek Sutton did say that Dennis first presented his KILROY overview while they were in Japan, and Tommy was so upset that he went out and drank a bunch of sake, and then came back to the hotel and came into Sutton's room and practically begged him not to let Dennis do it. But all he presented was his original concept, it wasn't "Mr. Roboto" . . . that was written later on to connect the film to the live action on stage.

I agree, I think Dennis is really good in this show, and actually so was JY, but Tommy is just weak in this particular performance. It is somewhat of a precursor, in my view, to some of the MTV stuff from his solo career where he was obviously not doing very well and it showed in his performances. But overall a lot of this show is good.

I hope all is well.

Cold War's a better song than Mr. Roboto. At least you don't need an album jacket full of liner notes to apply the lyrics of Cold War to anything. With Mr. Robot (and this is probably why it didn't do THAT great), nobody knew what the hell it was about except for rabid Styx fans.

On the videos... WHERE do you guys get this stuff? Amazing stuff's out there.

Actually, "Mr. Roboto" did better than any other Styx single with the exception of "Babe", selling a million singles. I'd say that's "THAT great" by pretty much any standard, LOL. That doesn't mean you have to like it, but it did very, very well, and continues to garner Styx more back exposure than almost any other song they ever recorded. I'm sure they're pretty ambivalent about that, LOL.

I hope all is well.

I stand corrected.
In Seattle and the area where I grew up, a lot of kids were Styx fans UNTIL that song came out and I remember a LOT of flack locally about the song and how kids just DIDN'T get it. The local rock stations, the same ones that constantly played Paradise Theatre stuff would NOT touch the Kilroy album. They played Don't Let it End and that was all. They wouldn't touch Mr. Roboto and many of the local dj's hated the song and made no secret of it. Even today, when the local sucky classic rock station plays a Styx tune, sometimes you'll hear the "mr. Roboto jab".

Also, "back attention" does not necessarily designate a "classic" or even a good song. If "Yummy Yummy Yummy" was used in a Denny's advert, would that mean that the song was now deemed "classic" or "worthy"? I don't think so. There's an ad up here where these cows are singing either Lady or Babe (I forget). It's a funny ad, but they could've used any 'dopey love song' and it would've had the same result.

Oh, and where's my book?!?!? ;)

Oh, I agree that getting more attention does not always mean a song is great, and there's no question that "Mr. Roboto" spooked a fair number of classic Styx fans. But I think they were reacting to what it WASN'T - obviously it was not what we had come to expect from this band - rather than what it WAS, which is a very well-written, incredibly catchy, albeit rather quirky and lyrically obscure song. It's not that different from "Pinball Wizard" . . . I mean, if you take that song out of context you could just as easily say, "What the hell does that mean, 'That deaf dumb and blind kid sure plays a mean pinball?!!'" LOL. The difference is that TOMMY got turned into a movie and then a Broadway show, and most people have at keast a passing familiarity with what it's about, whereas "Mr. Roboto", the concept did not get the market penetration it needed to make the average person understand it. I think kids today who are hearing it for the first time are reacting to it much better simply because they are hearing it as a single song, rather than hearing it with the set of expectations that it's going to be the next "Renegade" or whatever. They don't have the same preconception of what Styx should be, so they hear it for what it is rather than what it is not. It's ALWAYS going to be a source of disagreement for the classic fans, no doubt . . .BUT, it has also helped to spawn the third generation of Styx fans, who find their way to the greatest hits because of hearing it and then get turned on to the band as a result. That's no bad thing.

I hope all is well.
