They rehearsed.

Rockwriter wrote:Glen shared a dressing room with Dennis so that nobody who was at war with each other would have to be together, and Dennis was not talking to Gary Loizzo (because Gary was going to do the upcoming tour without him), so George Packer was having to run messages back and forth between them. Gary was in the audio truck parked outside the building, and there's an intercom so you can talk to the band members on stage, but since he and Dennis were not speaking, Gary would have to say to George, "Tell Dennis to play his organ." Then George would run out of the truck and inside to tell Dennis, who then might respond with something like, "Tell Gary to turn me up in the monitor."

They all had their various reasons for wanting to go forward, even though they knew it was going to be tense. In the book I asked Todd why they didn't have Gowan do the show, and he said they didn't yet know how everything was going to end up, plus they had not rehearsed with him. From the perspective of the show promoting the release of BNW (which was the entire point of doing this show) , it was also better to have the classic guys there as much as possible to promote the perception that it was an album done by that lineup.
From Dennis' perspective, he had committed to doing the show and did not want to cancel because he believed in the charity . . . plus, he took the opportunity to confront Tommy and tried to beg him to stall the release of the album so they could go back in and fix the tracks that Dennis thought needed fixing. That turned out to be a bust. . . they ended up in a huge argument in the dressing room, and the whole experience was a nightmare for everyone. It's not the band's greatest performance, either. Todd's in-ear monitors went on the blink as they went to live air, so as you watch this, keep in mind that he is playing his parts without being able to hear anything from any other band member . . . no vocals, no other instruments. He is playing as if by himself in his practice room, unable to hear anything but drums. Pretty amazing that it's as good as it is when you consider the circumstances.

Side note: "fix the tracks that Dennis thought needed fixing" is a fantastic euphamism.
Side note #2: They really hadn't rehearsed with Gowan yet at this point? Wow. Cutting it close.

Heh. I didn't see them until late August. They seemed pretty tight by then, although the chemistry was still a bit strange.

You mean wonderful tracks like "Brave New World (Reprise)" and its excellent mix? Boy, that album is perfect. Needs no fixing!
