Well both of them actually. Delp and Goudreau were both in Boston.
Never discount what Scholz did for Boston. He created the guitar sound they were famous for. Scholz was a graduate of MIT, and invented many tools that guitarists used in that day. There was something called the Power Soak. It would allow you to play your amp at low volume but with the overdrive you would get at a high volume. There was the Rockman. I use to have one. It was a Walkman sized device that you could plug your guitar into and a pair of headphones into and practice. It had THE trademark Boston distortion sound, plus it had a chorus and echo setting. It was an incredible piece of ingenuity. Scholz may have not been the best guitarist around, but he knew how to make rock music sound great.
