The Grand Illusion is a no-holds-barred, backstage pass to the journey of one of the world’s most revered bands, and the true story of Chuck Panozzo’s 50-year struggle to reconcile his public life as a rock star with his private life as a gay man. Beginning with the birth of Styx in Chicago and their meteoric rise, The Grand Illusion is a revealing look at the triumphs and tragedies that surrounded Panozzo’s life. He chronicles life on the road, the break-up of the band, his struggle to help his twin brother and bandmate John Panozzo battle addiction, as well as his split with Dennis De Young, and finally coming to terms with his HIV positive status. Illuminating and unflinching, The Grand Illusion will captivate the band’s legions of devoted fans, as well as music lovers everywhere.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend any of the book signings or anything, but I have ordered a copy of the book. That's the best place I know of to get the real truth of what happened within the band. Who better to write such a book than someone who was there?

And I really admire Chuck for coming out (both literally and figuratively) on this issue. I've said it a lot, I may not agree with the whole gay rights thing, but I do admire and respect him for standing up for something he believes in. You go, Chuckie!! :)

Can't wait to get the book!

I'm going to go see Chuck for one of his book signings. I met his brother once and I want to meet him too. I am proud and happy for him that he doesn't have to hide anything anymore. I have no idea what that must have felt like for him all those years, but I know it must have really sucked not being able to be himself.
I hope Chuck can live the rest of his life in peace and enjoy life. And I can't wait to shake his hand. It will be an honor to meet my all time favorite and world's classiest Bassist.

I actually tried to purchase Chuck's book along with Sterling's through Amazon.com. Chuck's book pushed the delivery date back 2 months!!!! I went back and cancelled and reordered just the Sterling book, and lo and behold on my door step in two days.

Chuck's book isn't due out until May 1 (so I was told by Borders bookstore). Apparently Sterling's book is already out.

If Chuck's book is half as good and Sterling's it will be a good read. I more than likely will not buy it, until I find out if it is a pro gay stance or not. I hate to be that way, but I haven chosen over the last few years to try and not support things that are willingly wrong. Have not bought and Elton John cd in over 15 years, and the guy is amazing. But does not just extend to gay people, but things that willingly promote drugs, and other sins of our times (yes I don't do a lot)-ERIC

Just a guess here... but since Chuck is very much an advocate of gay rights, I'm thinking it will be a pro-gay book...

The reason I'm getting it is mainly for the insights into my favorite band.

I'm glad you like my book. Thanks!

As for Chuck's book, well, I'd be awfully surprised if it's going to take anything other than a pro-gay rights stance. Why would it? That would make no sense at all. But it really all comes down to how someone defines "willingly wrong" and "promoting the sins of our times", and I'm going to take a wild guess that Chuck does not see homosexuality as either one (nor do I, incidentally). I haven't read his book yet, obviously, but the publisher says it's a personal narrative about Chuck's life as a gay man in the closet while taking part in a very successful rock band, with the band's history as a backdrop to his own life story. I guess we'll see soon enough.

I hope all is well.

To let everyone know, I hold know ill will to Chuck, have met him once, and he was nothing but nice, even signed my Styx poster I had. I have nothing against any gay people, murders, thieves, etc.. When Elton John appeared on VH1 divas I stopped supporting him. I Chuck is promoting being Gay I would not support him. If Dennis wrote a book on how to kill people, I would not buy it or his records anymore. But I would still talk to him. If I saw Chuck in the street nowadays, I would walk up to him and say hi, and how I enjoyed his music with Styx.
But to ME, being gay is a sin because it goes against the bible and goes against nature. I am not trying to start a war on the bible or anything. This how I feel. And I will not hold any bad feelings to anyone who feels different or is different.-ERIC

Bigger disappointment that you think I support prejudice and hate :( . Yes it is a sin just like homosexuality, bigotry, adultery, fornication and all that. I like Chuck, but will not support something that promotes homosexuality is what I am getting at. I don't think it is how you are born with, but what you chose to do.
I had a gay friend , that I hung around for years, still talk to him from time to time. Wish you could Ask him if he thought I was a bigot. Had a black room mate for a while. No way to prove any of this to you, take my word or not. My point is I do not buy things that PROMOTE ...... Is a disappointment people want to read more into things that what really is.-ERIC

Eric, the guy's telling his life story & experience. He's not "promoting" anything other than what happened to him and what it was like. This is what I meant by "now would be a good time..." If you don't want to support Chuck by buying this book, then don't. That's certainly your prerogative, but don't expect many people to so-sign this sort of BS disguised as morality.

I am not expecting any one to come over to my "BS" or morality (and no I do not not work for Dr. Righteous and the MMM)or whatever one wants to call it . I had dropped the subject too, but if someone says they are disappointed in my opinion I have the right to respond. I have been carefully to word things right so not to try and get anyone upset, because this is a sore subject. I do not think I offended anyone, if I did sorry. But I have a right to say what I believe, and I have doen it without name calling, or dragging anyone through the dirt.
As I said I have no problem with ones sexuality, but I don't have to agree with it or anything anyone does, if I don't believe it is right to me. Does it mean I will push my view or expect someone to have my views to be friends with them? No.

Hope this explains some-ERIC

Eric, I understand where you're coming from. I don't support most gay rights either, although I do believe they should be treated with respect. I for one applaud you for saying what you believe, even though it's an unpopular view (i.e., not "politically correct".) I imagine you do tolerate and accept gays, but, no, you do not have to agree with/support that which you believe to be a sin. As I've stated (twice), the only reason I'm buying the book is to find out more about Styx... and I'll admit to some curiosity about how Chuck, as a gay man, felt about having to hide an integral part of who he is. Do I feel right about spending my money on something when part of it will surely be used to promote something I'm not 100% in agreement with? Not really, but there's nothing I can do about it, short of not buying the book, and I am going to buy it.

I just wanted to let you know that there is one person on this board who understands how you feel.

Blessings,
Ciana

And yes, I fully expect a backlash from this post, but there's nothing I can do about that, either.

I have had a few emails and pms on this subject, but nothing bad. Some say they understand what I say, but do not agree, so supporting what I have said, and some not. But it all has been civil, which I thank all of you for. If we agree that is fine, and if we don't that is fine. But thank you for your post and anyone else who has been civil about it-ERIC

Let me clarify... I don't believe in gay marriage or adoption, but I do support most antidiscrimination laws. (Equal housing, employment, etc.) I do not consider myself a bigot or homophobic. (Although some of you obviously will, and that's your right.)

Okay, that's the last I'm going to say on this subject. I don't need anyone telling me to shut the f**** up.

Disclaimer: Everyone has a right to express their views. That was never in question. My "STFU" comment was more to offer "free advice" (hint: psst: hey - you might wanna rethink the unsolicited remarks on homosexuality because nothing good is gonna come of it, sorta thing) knowing exactly what this was about to turn into based on the proclaimations being made. Furthermore, I can't say if you are a bigot/homophobe or not, but I do know lots of bigots and homphobes don't believe they are bigots and homophobes either. That's all *I'll* say on the subject.
