I think I still have it on tape somewhere at my mom's house lmao

Robin

Bought it in 1993, listened to it ...once. Actually, I think "Love Me Tonight" got two spins, because I kinda dug the intro, and the updated "Young Man" also got a repeat listen, just to make sure it actually was as bad as I thought it was. No idea what happened to the CD after that. Definitely JY's nadir.

Now City Slicker I actually like quite a bit. JYG has its moments, too.

And JY would be the Barry Bonds of the team. :D

Good analogy, actually. Another example of why Styx was better as a TEAM than as they are now.

Yo Blue Falcon,

That wasnt my quote. Shit whats cricket????

Anyway I would never say that about Tommy because it is sooooo damn obvious that if you live by the single, then you die by the single.

With that said, why is it that I can listen to a Tommy Shaw or Glen Burtnik CD from cover to cover and completely enjoy it. I can do this without having to pause or take a break. When it comes to Dennis I cant listen to song after song of just him. I dont think that I have ever been able to listen to his Ultimate Collection straight thru or his Symphony CD.

I like the majority of the music but I just cant listen to him non stop.

Does anyone else feel this way??

Yes I do. Dennis might be the superstar (not my opinion exactly) but I find that Dennis tends to have not great judgment on what a good song is or what a good song performance is. The funny thing is, he's great at finding what a good Styx song and performance is, but not his solo stuff. Some of the stuff on his first solo album was terrible (Boys will be Boys?? embarrassingly bad), his BNW cuts were either poorly written (High Crimes) or poorly performed tunes (Fallen Angel, Great Expectations).
Dennis is a Killer singer. Killer keyboard player. But I think when he writes, he sometimes does predictable and cliche types of things and sometimes just writes stuff that sounds incredibly dated or even immature. It may have something to do with his arrangements or choice of keyboard sounds.

First Time was like that a terrible song that could've been written by a kid. Awful tune.
Some of Desert Moon was like that.
The 2nd solo album was like that.
A lot of the Hunchback was like that.

However, give him a great song and he's awesome. 10 on Broadway, while being a bunch of Broadway tunes was a great record. Well produced, well sung and he picked good songs for it. He's great on that one. His solo albums have their moments but as a whole, I don't think they stand up (other than 10 on BW)
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

I'm fairly new here (been on the Journey board) but an avid Styx fan I have to agree completely brywool with what you said. The voice doesn't always make up for everything.

I just really miss hearing Dennis sing songs like RTP, Queen Of Spades, Borrowed Time, Grand Illusion, and even Not Dead Yet. It would be great to hear some new stuff along those lines. I think he sounds every bit as good (if not better) on those kinds of songs as he does on the ballads. I think I read somewhere on this board that there was talk of Dennis singing Everything Was Cool from BNW. That would've been killer, IMHO!

YES YES! WE HAVE A WINNER.

Dennis, PLEASE (for the love of GOD) release some actual ROCK songs. Put the Fender Rhodes in the garage and release some piano/organ-based ROCK songs with YOU playing the keyboards, not somebody else like on the Broadway album.

PLEASE.

Wow, bry. I don't always agree with you, but I sure do with what you said here.

My feeling about Dennis is, the more he sings with that amazing voice, the better. I would love a second recording of Broadway stuff, or even one of Dennis' idols, Gershwin. But that is just me -- I think.
