Again, I couldn't agree more with my BFF Rajah. It would be absolutely daft to educate or familiarize yourself before posting here. AND the "everyone knows" part too. Simply brilliant, as always.

Hey Bugsy, we were lumped together in the same group! How funny is that????

As you well know, Zan, stranger things have happened here! :D

Too true. And that brings up another point: our new special friend cleverly uses quotation marks (not consistently, but with plenty of gusto) around the band's name in order to express his opinion that they are less than authentic in some fashion.

DDYStyxFan, while I admire the sentiment and understand the air of dismissive contempt that you wish to convey (I can practically hear the delightful microsecond pause before the word and can easily visualize the finger gestures that go with it) there are other options practiced here which may be useful in expanding your palette.

For example, you could choose to capitalize the name when referring to the only true version of Styx (that is to say, any lineup pre-99) and use all lowercase otherwise. There is a variation on this theme which uses ALL CAPS when referring to the "real" Styx. Both versions get the point across while also helping you to blend in with the earthy posting style of your comrades-in-arms.

A personal favorite of mine is the "replacing-the-S-with-$" approach. It's not only stylish, but downright Swiftian in its subtle message that any version of the band without DDY is only in it for the money. As a combination Instrument Of Ridicule/Therapeutic Device, it has worked fantastically well for those poor, poor souls who recently had their childhoods raped by George Lucas.

Got a fondness for the classics? Why not go with the tried and true "insert-the-N" approach? It's powerful, and has the added benefit of taking a word back from the critics that once reviled the band (you know, back when they didn't deserve it.)

You could also refer to them as Dennis' Former Band (or DFB for short.) It's not as widely practiced and the acronym can be confusing for some folks who aren't in the know, but that sort of cloak-n-dagger creativity is all part of the fun!

The possibilities are truly endless, and the only boundaries are that of your imagination. Go forth and spread the hate!

In reading an article on the possible breakup of Aerosmith, the article discussed some other band break-ups (http://www.inrich.com/cva/ric/entertainment_living.apx.-content-articles-RTD-2007-05-31-0018.html). For Styx, the author concluded the following:

Verdict: DeYoung has the schmaltz, Shaw and Young the grit. One without the other isn't nearly as satisfying.

While people are willing to follow or support current Styx and/or DDY, I think many people here probably agree with the above - that, one without the other is not nearly as satisfying.

Stabbim thanks for the advice, I will certainly adhere to those tips here in the future.

On the subject of the band members, I would most definitely agree that each of them brought their own personality to the sound of the band. JY and DDY are seemingly polar opposites but with their creativity combined as well as sharing the lead vocal spot created a style that was uniquely Styx. I was discussing with my Dad how bands today only have one lead vocalist thus limiting their versatility. With the songwriting and lead vocals of three people, Styx was capable of a vast array of musical styles.

It is for this reason that I wish the band would get back together for some kind of reunion. I know its a long shot but we can all dream. I hate to dismiss JY, Tommy and Chuck in their current version of styx but the performances that DDY does just sound more like the real thing, even though he is the only one from the original band.

Well, I agree with half of it anyway! (Except I have yet to see DDY with Glen, which will certainly not hurt the satisfaction factor.)

Another reason why I loved Cyclorama so much - 4 singers, 5 writers. And one of them was Glen, who is, IMO, a songwriting genius.

i got kilroy was here for my 8th birthday which was march of '83.probably only a couple weeks or so from the day it was released.around '89 or so i started collecting all the old stuff like grand illusion, pieces of eight, paradise theatre, cornerstone, etc. the first time i played cornerstone i thought i had it mixed up with an air supply cassette, lol. needless to say except for maybe borrowed time i didn't care too much for it at first.then in 1991 i saw styx with glen burtnik live in concert.i also was one of those who bought edge of the century the day it come out.i think it charted only as high 63 which was pretty bad considering styx had like five or six straight top ten albums.still one of my favorite bands of all time though.i bought styx greatest hits the day it come out in '95 although i prefer the original 'lady' to 'lady '95'
