He actually joked about that during the taped show in Montreal. He told the CHOM DJ, Terry DiMonte, that he had a song called "I Don't Believe in Anything" and another called "I Believe in You" on the same CD and joked to Terry, "How'd you like to live with ME, eh?" :-)

Wow, just heard the new disc in it's entirety.

Dennis is the heart and soul of Styx.... incredible...

It's so great to hear his voice and his melodic sensibilities once again. There are so many things on this album that feel like the Styx I know and love.

What a talent!

Rubicon needs to be released and REALLY REALLY pushed as a single.

If this song was handled correctly this could bring Dennis ALLLL the way back.

It's a classic song!!

Good music is good music & Great music is great music. This song is GREAT!!!!

I hope those that are handling Dennis & this CD realize that.

They do
But its up to what radio wants
They listen to the cd and say we want this tune,
Thats wht happened with 100.
There are so many options with this cd is amazing,
Im proud of Dennis and Tim Orchard they are running this ship very professonally
Unlike the other side who is spinning around in circles
That video just shows how messed up they are.

100 Years from now

Postby cittadeeno23 » Tue Jul 03, 2007 3:48 am

I finally got my CD on Saturday morning. First, a few quick thoughts...

1. Dennis has the best 60 year-old voice in the history of rock music!
2. Scratch number 1. How about, Dennis has the best voice of ANY-age Rocker in history! Much better!
3. If Dennis had written some of these songs for Brave New World, Larry would be pumping gas somewhere in Canada right now for a living.

"Rain" is INSANE!! What a fantastic song! I can't stop listening to it. My 4 year old daughter made me play it OVER and OVER again all weekend. She head-banged and air-Guitar'd all the way through it every time!

I can't wait for '100 years' in all English. Crossing the Rubicon is a masterpeice and Turn off CNN is Great.
I actually LOVE every song. This album kicks ass. Dennis (And Froy!) promised us an album true to his roots, and he delivered.

Anyone have Tommy's and JY's home address??? I want to send them BOTH a copy of this CD!!!

Pretty sure he'd still be singing and playing for a living, as he was before hooking up with Styx, but that's neither here nor there.

I keep reading this "if he'd been writing songs like these..." stuff, and it mystifies me. At this point, are there really that many people who believe that the split was all about musical differences?

The Larry comment was a JOKE! I am pretty sure that Larry would still be singing up in Canada. Just NOT singing Dennis' songs!

And yes, Musical differences was one of MANY reasons why the band broke up. JY and Tommy have both said that Many times. I know there were many other factors in the brake up, but that was clearly one of them.

+1 This split was (at that point) nearly 30 years of band tension coming to a head. You don't think they split up in 1983/4 because of only musical differences, either, right? That factors in, but other things do, too.

I've said here many times that the split was a matter of when, not if. Even if BNW was an OK album, DDY would have never hit the hits tour circuit hard to survive post-1999. He would have suggested something like he's doing now, or something like touring every other summer. We all know where that would lead.

WOuld BNW have been a better album with some better written tracks that sounded like the stuff on this album? No question, but I doubt BNW would have been more successful. Take "Everything Is Cool" for example - it's the only real "Styx" sounding song on there. It fell flat on its face. You think "Rubicon" - as good as it is - would have made a dent on radio? Not in a New York Minute.

Dennis writes his best music from his life experiences, what he sees, and what he hears. All of that went into the mix on this album, and we now have this really personal and, at the same time, really universal end product in "100 Years."

He would not have had something like this in him were he still with Styx, so it is a moot point.

The greatness of this album lies in his personal story and it was truly solo production on his part, not a group effort.

Would some of these songs sound great performed by Styx? Of course. But they probably would have been quite different.

What I love most about this album is that it was NOT done with his former bandmates. It is a wonderful work in and of itself.

Postby cittadeeno23 » Tue Jul 03, 2007 4:49 am

True. Dennis' new album is a result of what happened in his life in the last few years. This music was not in him in 1999.
My post was meant to get a laugh. I guess I better keep my day job!
If the 1999 tour would have happened with Dennis, I agree it wouldn't have lasted much longer than 1 or 2 years at the most. Way too much tension.
And Tommy and JY CLEARLY want to stay on the road as much as possible.

As far as new Styx songs getting any airplay, We all know the Airwaves are not as free as they used to be. Not even close.
Everything is Cool is a GREAT song. But the kids today are conditioned to like the stuff that is being shoved down their throats. Styx and Dennis sound foreign to them.
As fans, we still want our favorite bands to keep getting success. Styx bucked the trend when they broke out in the 70's.
The powers that be were NOT Styx fans. They didn't fit their agenda. But Styx broke out anyway because of FAN demand.
The best that can happen now is if more Classic rock stations get some balls and play more new music from Classic rock bands. But if Clear-Channel owns them, don't count on it.

Hey, cittadeeno;

Didn't mean to sound so serious :) . I am thrilled that you got the album and are enjoying it as much as so many others, it seems.

I absolutely do not expect much in the way of any radio play here in the states for anything from this album. I am happy to see it is getting play on Canadian radio and is moving up the AC and Top 40 charts there. Cold day in hell before that happens here.

And I completely agree with you about Dennis' voice. It is one in a million, then and now! :D

BTW.. for us living In Canada that haven't purchased this CD as of yet, do NOT try and get it at Best Buy.

Why?

Well it's not there or listed on their website either.

I'm actually quite surprised, since most of the other big "chain" stores like Futureshop, HMV, Wal Mart all have it here in Edmonton.

I'm sure it will go Gold in Canada at least (well okay, will go Gold in Quebec lol) but I doubt he'll sell more then 10,000 copies total in the rest of Canada unless he gets on the radio here.

Now gold in Canada is 50,000 copies. I'm predicting if it does go gold, he'll sell between 45-48000 copies in Quebec and the rest will be from across the country.

I just spent my lunch hour listening to the CD again in my car. This CD gets better every time I listen to it!
It is really a ROCK CD. Even the so-called balleds are up-tempo and keep the CD flowing. Dennis did a great job on this all the way through, IMO. The guitar work is great all the way throughout. The backing vocals are not DY/JY/Tommy good, but they are Pretty damn good! Some of the vocals are a little similar to "the Storm" for obvious reasons. Kevin and Dennis really sound good together.
It's hard to pick a favorite song. They are all so damn good. Rain keeps grabbing me. This time Next year keeps getting better and better.
And I am going to listen to Rubicon with my headphones tonight. I think he IS saying STYX, STYX in the beginning.

My friend thinks I am some kind of conspiracy nut. So I played 'Turn off CNN' for him and told him that Dennis says at the beginning "FU*K BUSH!!" I know he says PUSH, but it's fun to tease my friend!!

What a great CD!!

Not our Dear ole President

Hate to sound political here or start something but, CNN is a democratic station and I think that is why he is hitting them hard instead of anyone else. Also I think CNN is behind the democrats on taking the words "under god" out of the Pledge.

Lots of people refer to CNN as the CIA news network!! Everything THEY want you to hear!
But this isn't the forum for that kind of stuff.

But Dennis is just basically saying that the news is depressing and it might be better to just turn it off. That's not very political.

However, the lyrics to "I don't beleive in anything", well that's a different story!!

"And I don't beleive in anything any politician says, from some little councilman up to our dear old Pres.
I hate the bloody liberals and the neo cons. They're all so full of shit. Oh the way they talk to us. I think they think we're idiots. A royal bunch of hypocrites."

I love the line "I think they think we're idiots. A royal bunch of hypocrites".

Denny nailed that one right on the head.

I like that he is getting a bit more controversial in his lyrics.
Go get em Dennis! And this album ROCKS!!!

Best Buy owns future shop. When they purchased the chain a few years ago, they decided to keep the name and the format which is a little different than Best Buy. Also, over the years, they have found the demographics of Future Shop is slightly older than Best Buy. Demographics of the shoppers of Best Buy vs Future Shop may be the reason why they have selected to stock it at one and not the other.

I ordered my CD on the first and got it today on the fifth, not bad I'd say for his website.
I have listened to the CD a couple times and it is very, very good, and probably his best solo record out of the four previous ones released commercially. Definitely has more of a Styx feel than his previous solo outings. Not a throw-away track in the bunch for me.
Within the next week and after a few more spins, I will give a song by song review. Also, good to see the album coming in at just over 50 minutes instead of 65 or 70, less is better and provides a more cohesive album.

OMG, okay here we go AGAIN!! DDY is not Styx? Okie Dokie, but Dennis was a big part of Styx especially in their hey-day. If I'm not mistaken, Dennis had pretty much a big input with the music and sound of Styx during that time and I think he even produced a few of the Styx albums, please correct me if I'm wrong.

For your information ChicagoStyx, Dennis wanted to write and put together music that HE wanted to do. For this solo album/cd he didn't have to listen to any record executive on how the songs should be like back in the 80's, IMO. He loves playing his piano, he loved going back to playing his Oberheim (not sure if it was with the 8 or 4), he loves the harmonies, always has. I could tell a few years ago through last year the excitement of working on this new cd that he expressed. I think he really had a great time especially in the studio recording again. I was so excited when I heard that Kevin would be singing on his cd too!!!

Hi gr8dane :D

Dennis has been playing 3 of his new songs at his longer concerts :) I'm pretty sure at least 2-3 new songs will stay in the setlist going into next year especially when he will be touring to support his new cd, IMO.

Nice to see you back, Suite. Will we see you on the "other" board soon?

I'll be arriving in Chicago on July 20th, but I've got somewhere else to be that night!! So close and yet so far ....

Oh well, DDY will be back in Montreal in August (the 18th I think?), so I'll get my fix then. :-)

Heyyy, I'LL be in Milwaukee for the show, along with a couple of friends of mine. Just a couple more weeks... looking forward!

Anyway... Okay, I've had a week and some change to lsietn to the CD now. And so far, I'm with the majority... incredible CD! It sounds good from beginning to end.

I've always been a big DDY fan, and liked his tunes from rockin' to mellow to cheesy. That said, and please don't lynch me, lsiten to what I'm syaing and not what it sounds like I'm saying, here... I think "Breathe Again," and to a slightly lesser extent, "I believe in You" sound a little out-of-place on this CD. I do NOT think they are bad songs at all. A tad cheese, a tad showy... he does that very well. I think the other nine songs are so much of a departure, while as the same time a revistation, that they make a cohesive listening statement in and of themselves. These two songs pull me a little out of it, to be honest. Again, I like them. Nice harmonies, well-done... just sound odd in the mix to me personally.

My only other nit-pick are in the midst of all the harmonies, now and then... a few sound *almost* over-produced. But I think I'm just spoiled by the particular sound generated by Dennis and Tommy and JY. "This Time Next Year" has a very "Queen" sound to the chorus (I think anyway... anyone else feel that?), which I find kind of cool, actually. But so much of the rest of it is spot on, it's hard to complain.

And that's it. Otherwise, every single bit of it it flawless. I agree that "Crossing the Rubicon" is lyrically, vocally, and sonically amazing. I'd love for this song, by some twisted bout of luck, timing, fluke, or whatever... accidentally gat some radio play and do something. I dunno, like some movie picks it up for a soundtrack piece, and the movie makes it big, and the single becomes associated with it... Cuz you guys are right. The radio's not going to just sponge it up on their own. But if something happened where it worked its way in the back way... ya know? I love it, and I'd kill to hear more like it from him.

And the rest is just so solid, and he's on the top of his form without question. It sounds so much more like an effort to show us something than his past solo albums (which I love and would never knock, by the way)... But they feel like more than just a new collecting of songs. They're obviously inspired. It's really good to see DDY on the top of his game again.

So there it is, for what it's worth. All I want to know now is... when's he gonna start working on his next CD?

I think this album BLOWS away all of Dennis' past solo albums. And I do like his solo stuff.
I've always said he is better in Styx than solo. And I am pretty sure he feels that way too. It always helps to have other influences, especially when you have 3 songwriters to bounce ideas off of.
But this album is great. EVERY song is fantastic in my opinion. Rain and Rubicon are incredible.
This album deserves airplay. It won't get it, but it is better than anything ClearChannel is force-feeding us right now.

Lets just pretend he did this one for his fans! And himself!
