Whatcha think about Glen?

Postby GrandIllusionist725 » Fri Jul 20, 2007 1:15 pm

Ya know, i read read read about the how someone loves Dennis but hates Lawrence, someone loves Lawrence but hates Dennis, then come the people who love Tommy and JY and people who dislike them both. But what about Mr. Glen Burtnik? I don't think i have seen one person here badmouth Glen and i want to know what you all think about this guy? I personally like him, he is full of talent and his solo stuff is wonderful. Although his time with Styx (in 1990 and 1999-2003) was short lived, he put together some wonderful work and some favorites of mine.

In my opinion, one of the classiest Styx members of all time.

Well, not here and not lately, since he's been working with DDY. To many of these folks, he was pretty much the Devils' cabana boy during his latest tenure with Styx.

I really don't like him to be honest with you. I just don't think he fit the band very well. I don't hate him, and I know he is a good song writer, but I just don't care for him too much.

I also thought Kiss Your Ass Goodbye was one of the worst songs I've ever heard. It sounds like Blink 182 not Styx. As for the other stuff he wrote, I liked all of it. I guess this one song really turned me off of the guy....

Besides, I'm sure he knows he sucks. ;-)

What?? LOL I had to re-read this one a few times - LOL

As for Glen, I like his songwriting and singing too and as a person he's one of a kind. The few times that I met him he was very nice and down to earth, very outgoing and even did a few favors for me which WILL be mailed out sometime this year - UGH!!

I like everything about Dennis, his songwriting, singing and as a person. He's one of the nicest, down to earth people that I've met and VERY outgoing and funny. The only thing that I don't care about him is that he is a Bears fan - LOL He did sign my Cheesehead though. He wouldn't wear it - LOL Anyhoo.

I don't care for Larry's singing, but I do like him as a person. He's down to earth too.

I like Tommy's singing and songwriting too. TO ME, when he's with Jack Blades he seems different, more happy when performing then lately when he's with Styx. I've seen numerous clips on You Tube. I would imagine that he's very down to earth too when talking one on one.

I don't care for JY's singing, but when I met him I thought he was super nice and very down to earth. BUT I don't care for how bitter he is in his interviews and it seems to be getting worse. It's sad that someone could be bitter for this long. IMO

I think most people are cool with Glen these days. However that was not the case when he replaced Tommy in the early 1990s. I remember frequenting a computer BB at that time (still in its infancy back then) and you would swear poor ol' Glen was the Anti-Christ the way the faithful talked about him.

For the record I always defended and liked the guy.

Glen's a true professional

Postby kipthekid » Fri Jul 20, 2007 11:40 pm

Glen is a very consistent, very solid singer and musician and a very well respected (by his peers) song writer. He's one of "those guys" (Marshall Crenshaw, Nils Lofgren also come to mind) that probably should have been a bigger star than he turned out to be.
Can't we all just get along?

I think of him the same way Glen thinks of himself... nothing more than a footnote in the history of the band.

I think that he is the MOST UNDERATED performer in the history of rock & roll.

Welcome To Hollywood is the GREATEST CD no one has ever heard. Retrospectable & Pallokaville were both awesome.

His songs on Edge & Cyclorama were by far the best of the lot.

He does NOT give himself near the credit that he deserves.

However that was not the case when he replaced Tommy

Postby cittadeeno23 » Sat Jul 21, 2007 4:17 am

You are right, Cinj, some people were upset. but I never understood this. Tommy was in Damn Yankees by his own choice. Glen had nothing to do with it, so I never understood why people were upset at Glen. To his credit, he kicked ass on the EDGE tour.
I guess it is a lot like the Larry- Dennis situation. Most fans want the real lineup. But Larry and Glen had nothing to do with what happened in either of those cases. If they hadn't accepted the jobs when they were offered them, someone else would have!

Anyway, Glen is awesome. He is highly underrated and deserves much more fame than he has gotten.
Welcome to Hollywood is one of my favorite albums. All his solo albums are great, but Hollywood is my fav.

Of the CDs you've heard. There is *tons* of great music out there that you'll never hear otherwise... not just Glen's stuff... find a genre you like and explore... there are tons of fantastic albums that have done nothing.

I love THE Edge album. I loved it from day one.

I like Show Me The Way, Love At First Sight, Carrie Ann & Back To Chicago. I like EVEN more All In A Days Work, Edge Of The Century, World Tonight & Love Is The Ritual.

Homewrecker was typical JY & Not Dead Yet was also OK.

I like the ENTIRE CD. I dont skip a single song.

Still when its all said I like Glens songs the best. By a LARRRRR GGGEEEE Margin!!!

I wish Dennis would pull out "Not Dead Yet" for some shows on his tour, it would be such an awesome live song. Does anyone remember what the Styx set list was during the Edge tour?

Sounded to me like he was saying Glen had the best songs *of anybody* on Edge and Cyclo... and I think "Show Me The Way" was the best song on Edge.

Well, it was played during the soundcheck for DDY's solo concert debut at Rye Playland. It didn't make the set, though. :)

I took to Glen pretty well when he first came on the Styx scene, and even back-tracked into what solo material he had up to that point. I thought each of hos solo projects got better... and by the time 'Hollywood came out, I couldn't believe how much he really seemed to come into hos own. A few years after that CD came out, and it STILL hasn't left my regular listening rotation yet. I never met Glen in person, but I'd love to! (So if you're reading, Glen, gimme a call and we'll get some coffee when you're in Chicago LOL) But musically, I agree. Incredibly under-rated, especially currently. Hope to hear more new material from him sometime soon!

"All In A Day's Work" is the best song on Edge, followed by "Back to Chicago". "All In A Day's Work" is quite honestly one of the best Styx songs put on any record, and is in the "Boat on the River" mold of being non-traditional.

I disagree... you don't like ballads... which is quite apparent by your comments in Sterling's book.

I like a great song, ballad or not, and SMTW is a *great* song and the best on Edge.

Actually I do. I'm one of the few that likes "First Time" and I like "Babe", "The Best of Times", "Don't Let It End", and quite a few more. I just never really thought SMTW was a stellar song, and it's much worse a capella. It's not a horrible song, but not my first choice for a Styx ballad. EOTC would have died much quicker if the Gulf War version of SMTW had not caught on. LITR didn't do well, and without SMTW, you don't have "Love At First Sight" or "Carrie Ann" as singles.

And what the hell is "All In A Day's Work"? A rocker? Yeesh!
