BANG!

Nope. It just won't die. It's something of an entity now. Perhaps the Beast!

The ONLY thing that Friga's done that's anywhere near Gregg's greatness is the outro on Livin' To Do (and I suspect that it was more somebody else's idea than his). Anyway, for as great as Gregg is musically, he was lacking in the looks department (many women claim he's aged well and I'd agree - the dude is sharp but I'd also like to point out my perfect record of staunch heterosexuality). I think his looks (and playing to some extent) gave JOURNEY an "older" more sophisticated image. With MTV on the horizon it made sense for JOURNEY to seek a replacement that would have something to offer in the looks department. Enter Friga - baby-face fresh from The Babys. That sweet, angelic mug was a no-brainer to help JOURNEY bring in bunches of teen girls through MTV and Tiger Beat magazine. Teen girls = $$$ in the bank.

I always thought Rolie was a great looking guy & he still is. Herbie obviously agreed as he made that remark about him being tough to replace b/c of his looks as well as his voice. However, I think Gregg had a 70s kinda look which was out of style in the 80s. Ur right about Friga having that "baby's butt just been slapped" fresh look. Actually, it's that very "look" that probably appeals to Matty so much :-)

And the smock\coat\painted garment.

The poll was whether it looked "gay ass" or not. Which the coat did.

Do any of u remember the summer of 1980? I do pretty clearly (my hair took on the perfect Farrah look that year :-)) Anyway, that year was the perfect build up for Journey to be really successful. Every radio station was playing AWYWI a lot. I clearly remember being out on Lake Michigan for the day on the 4th of July, having just bought Departure & we were actually getting tired of AWYWI. We were looking for a radio station that didn't play it 4 times an hour.

I was hanging out w/my cousin who was a year younger (14) & all her friends had copies of Departure. All their little 13 year old sisters wanted their own copies of Departure.

Teens were INTO Journey that year. The radio was INTO Journey that year. I honestly think they would have been GIANTS no matter what their next album was. Sure ESC4P3 had radio-worthy hits that helped even more. But they were on their way regardless.

Exactly. They were mere iches away from the top. I remember a friend having Departure on 8 Track!!! Too funny.

Seems to define JC.

Anyway, you've got to add "JSS Rocks!" to your AV. It's perfect - it'll be like Joe screaming it at everyone.

Speaking of adding "JSS Rocks!" to AV's - how are you going to do it with Igor?

From Andrew?????? Who would have to "confirm" it for u to believe it? Sheesh.

Sheesh yourself, Susie you are smarter than this

Andrew is not a representative of the band or of a major label.

He is however, in communication with the band and management - and Andrew is the only one who has stated it - as himself and not as a representative of the band.

That is exactly what makes it insider info.

I have not called anyone a liar or said that I know better. I have merely stated my opinion.

Yes - a third of the fanbase they had 1981 was in place before Cain joined.

You may recall how JOURNEY's fan base turned their backs on them when SP joined.

You mean the three men and dog who used to show up to watch one of Greg Rolie's jazz odysseys on the hammond organ?

When you look at the big picture it can be argued that SP's voice, MTV, and Friga's looks had more to do with the success of E5C4P3 than the song writing!

Firstly, MTV was launched in 1981. Nobody watched it and in any case the playlist was largely made up of English new wave bands. Also Journey didn't record any videos for the singles.

Yes - the Houston show was filmed in late 1981. But how many people watched it? And to what extent was Cain's looks important to this performance? After all, this wasn't a highly stylized show was it?

The fact is...Journey broke into the big leagues in '81 due to RADIO. And Cain's genius for simple and memorable keyboard riffs - and his overall song-writing contribution - was a key factor behind the appeal of DSB, WCN and OA. No, not the only factor - but much more significant than you are giving him credit for.

So it really didn't matter who replaced Gregg - they were going to get a pass. Friga got that pass. He got more of a pass than SP did!

I'd say that most people - both then and now - have no idea who Rolie or Cain are. Perry and Schon were the two truly visible members of the band. You say that Cain's 'looks' were a factor in the band's success. I'd say that the absence of Rolie's ugliness probably helped to a minor extent - but actually most fans were utterly indifferent to who the keyboard player was.

But we serious fans know how important the keyboard player has always been in Journey. Or at least those of us who aren't sulking and trying to rewrite history because the keyboard player might or might not have fired JSS....

JR (Susie) wrote:Then why do u go on & on & on ad infinitum about ESC4P3 being the greatest thing since sliced breads? Surely ur neighbors & co-workers might not agree. Are u trying to convince them, us or u?

Actually, I've been a total bore in this forum about Raised on Radio. Banging on about Escape is relatively new for me....

On the one hand u claim he is the greatest songwriter of all time, brilliant, etc.

You're wildly exaggerating my claims for the guy...as usual....

On the other hand u don't own ANY of his solo work & think all his work is shit except that which he did w/Perry. Don't u realize what ur saying? The ONLY time he was any good was when Perry was around to hold his hand thru it. The GREAT part of his songwriting was influenced heavily by Perry. W/out Perry he's nothing. In other words, it's Perry that's the genius. U have said that loud & clear w/out realizing that's what ur alluding to.

Well, I am a Loon at heart so maybe that's coming through in my posts. But equally I have said that I think Perry's solo material is much diminished by the absence of Cain. Perry needed Cain too. Will I have to repeat this another fifty times before you grasp my point on this?

Oh I have Matty. U love to avoid questions that would make u look bad. U just twist words.

I'll say it again...

Susie. Ask the question. In simple English.

What is so difficult about that?

No. Because it didn't happen....

All Andrew has said is that there was interest from the London office of a major label. No actual offer. No money on the table. Just some interest.

And so far there's been no reports at all that there was even any interest in the US....
