Kinda OT: Is this 2007 or 1987?

Postby StyxCollector » Thu Aug 02, 2007 2:02 pm

So I just got back from seeing Cheap Trick and Squeeze here in Boston. Cheap Trick did a 45 minute main set with about 3 encores for a total of about an hour. Now I know how it would be with Styx doing a shorter show. I've never seen CT live, but they were good. Robin Zander's voice IMHO has held up great - better than most of his contemporaries. He hit all the notes, no detunings. Something may have been wrong, because Rick Nielsen was doing all the talking. Not a biggie.

Squeeze was amazing. I saw them a few years back at Avalon without Difford. This time it was with Difford and Tillbrook, and Tillbrook's voice is amazing. I also LOVE his guitar tone. Nothing like a nice Tele sound :) They did a few songs I didn't know, but most of the ones you know, and I was happy they did some later material (such as off of 1993's wonderful Some Fantastic Place).

What this got me thinking was that first off, I've seen more shows this summer than I have in years. Second, nearly every band I've seen/am seeing had an album out or was probably touring in 1997.

I saw Shaw Blades 2x (DC and Chicago between March and May) - they don't count. However:
Rush - HYF came out in 1987 and I saw 'em in 87 or 88; saw them in June this year
The Police - Amnesty INt'l was 1986, so close enough
Genesis - was still on the Invisible Touch tour in 1987; saw 'em at the Vet (RIP) - saw them in the UK a few weeks back and will again in Boston in September
Squeeze - released Babylon and On in 1987/88
Bryan Adams - released Into the Fire in 1987; seeing him Friday

Heck, I'm even slightly considering seeing Styx/DL and getting a lawn seat just to see Styx. For $25 or so, I may chance it. DL released Hysteria in 1987.

So it's just odd. Not in a bad way, just odd.

I had that same revelation about Hysteria earlier this year, as well as Operation Mindcrime.

I have a lot of the same tastes as you do it appears! I was dissappointed last time I saw Cheap Trick because it seems they play 1 hr 15 minutes at the most these days. I've heard it's because Bun E. Carlos has a bad back. It also seems like they take a lot of breaks in between songs so Robin Zander can "catch his breath" - which is why Nielson does most of the talking (very common).

I'd love to go to all those concerts you mentioned, but I think I subconsciously boycott the high ticket prices and I never go see shows anymore. I won't even go to the movies anymore! Why pay $8.00 to see a movie when you can own it 6 months from now for less than $20? But I digress.... I mean, you're right, it's not 1987 anymore, and I have a wife, 2 kids and a mortgage to think about.

Enjoy all those great shows!

You're gonna love Texas, Stacy. LOL

Down here, we have a chain of movie theatres that charge $6.50-$8.50 for a ticket, depending on the time of day. BUT...you can buy a $12.00 combo at the concession stand with a large refillable popcorn, humongous drink, choice of candy, and a free ticket to your next movie. We haven't paid for a movie in 3 months. Of course, we've gained ten pounds.

Doh! Forgot I saw DDY in Montreal, too. Yeesh.

Only a couple of shows left. I'm used to $75 - $100 tickets. Squeeze was only $50, and the upcoming BA concert was $50, too. The only ticket "out of bounds" was the Police at like $225 (face value) + surcharges. Genesis in the UK was around $200 I think, but it'll be a slightly different setlist here and seeing them there is an experience - 50,000+ people singing along with songs like "Ripples". The Police show was good; saw 'em in Philly a few weeks ago. Only a couple of tunes I didn't really love.

My first concert was Genesis at the Spectrum in 1986 (prior to the 87 outdoor stadium toor) for $16.50. Not too shabby.

stmonkeys - movies here are like $10, too. Unless it's something I really want to see, I wait for DVD. Sometimes it's worth it to go, especially if it's projected in DLP. Ratatouille looked amazing with digital projection.

Ahhhhh.....I see your a true Genesis fan. "Ripples" is my favorite Genesis song - A Trick of the Tail my favorite album.

I saw the 86 tour as well as the 1992 tour. I was very dissappointed that it seemed 90% of their show was their last 2-3 albums - but I guess that's what the majority of the fans are mainly familiar with - at least here in the U.S.

The thing I love about Genesis is they have such a huge catalog of live albums from all different times of their career. I wish Styx would do the same thing.

Where in Texas do you (and others) live? I'm in Austin.

We definitely have an advantage over many when it comes to Cost of Living. I still won't go to a movie or most concerts though!

Oops. I guess I misworded that post. Stacy's fixin' to relocate to Texas, which is what made me say "you're gonna love Texas." In a separate thought, I wrote about "down here," which is South Florida. LOL

Sorry 'bout that!

I've spent a bunch of time in the DFW area and Austin for work. I admire people who can live there. I'll take my Boston winters (and it's not as bad as you think ...) over the hellish heat of TX any day. Although surprisingly Austin had a Kosher restaurant. I was happy.

I LOVE AUSTIN!!! we were there for a few days about 8 years ago. what a hip, bohemian place. it's like someone took the east village and dropped it right smack in the middle of texas. Unfortunately, we will not be moving there. my husband got a job in grapevine, which is right near Dallas. Long story - here's the semi-short version. we were supposed to move to south florida this fall. (zan country), but my husband got an offer he couldn't refuse (ie: a steady paycheck and health benefits), so instead of going to florida where my parents, inlaws, brother-in-law, friends etc are, we are going to texas where i know....... NOBODY! (unless you count todd & ricky! LOL)

so if anybody can give me a heads-up on the dallas area, it would be appreciated. we're looking at flower mound, highland village, lantana, southlake. any info would be cool. good schools are important. The houses down there certainly kick ass, that's for sure! :D oh allan, i saw a kosher-style restaurant in grapevine where you can get a corned beef on rye with matzah ball soup!!!!! and there is a reformed temple in flower mound. maybe i'll invite todd over for the high holy days. (no, not THAT kind of high..) ;)

we're prob going to leave NY in november...that's the current plan anyway. who knows what will happen in a few weeks! ;) anybody want to buy a house on long island? LOL

I worked for awhile in the northern(?) part of Dallas (Addison). There are two Kosher restaurants - Stuie's Place and Esther's Steakhouse - and there's a Kroger that has Kosher meat. All are pretty close to each other. There's a decent Jewish population in the DFW area, so if that's your thing, it's there. Much better than some other major metropolitan cities I've been to believe it or not. Unfortunately, since I do keep Kosher, the only meat I can eat is at Kosher restaurants or if I get it myself at a supermarket or butcher. It certainly helps on the road since it's not always available and I wind up eating "vegetarian". Keeps my figure slim and trim LOL

Bagelstein's is a fun place. Can't eat the meat, but the bagels are good and you can get Dr. Brown's.

That whole area around Addison seems pretty nice. Not sure how expensive it is, though.

I went to a convention at a place in Grapevine. It's near DFW airport. Not a bad place, kinda sparsely populated.

we don't keep kosher, so it's no problem. but its nice knowing that there is a bit of a jewish population there. i'll have to investigate those places you mentioned. bagelsteins, huh! sounds fun. you'll have to let me know next time your in DFW. i'm not sure where addison is, i'll have to check it out. i wouldn't consider the general area "expensive" at all. the houses there would sell for over 1 million up here. :D

yeah- you described grapevine. very sparse, but quaint. looks exactly like what you'd picture an "old west town" would be like now days. it's got potential.

Just make sure you get the equivalent of EZPass in Dallas or carry a lot of change. I found that out the hard way.

I think you will really love the Dallas - Ft. Worth area. Of course, I gather you're from NY and since I've never been there, I don't have anything to compare it to. Like many metropolitan areas, Dallas is growing "into the surrounding cities" and I'm a little familiar with Grapevine and Flower Mound. The main rule of thumb, and there are exceptions, is that the further "North" you go, the better the neighborhoods and schools. You may want to check out Lewisville, or even Denton - but that may be a stretch depending on where your husband works - Denton is probably about 35 miles to downtown Dallas - but a lot of people commute.

Fort Worth is a big culture hub - lot's of great museums, parks and fun stuff for kids and it's about 30 miles west of Dallas. Since I moved away, they've improved many of the highways substantially and traffic has improved greatly (that's not to say it's great just greatly improved!

Then of course you have Arlington, which is right in the middle of Dallas - Ft. Worth which is where they have Six Flags, and lots of other cool things for families. It is a pretty conservative area (actually, most of Texas is, except for Austin) and I will warn you - IF YOU"VE NEVER LIVED IN THE SOUTH - IT WILL GET UNBEARABLY HOT IN THE SUMMER TIME! Be prepared to have you air conditioner on all the time. I remember the first time I visited "North" I couldn't believe there were buildings that didn't have air conditioning!

All in all it might be a culture shock, but you'll grow to love it I'm sure. Oh and it's probably a WHOLE LOT cheaper than NY!

a pretty conservative area, huh- that in itself will be culture shock. ;) from what i've seen so far, it looks like a very nice place to live. clean, affordable, everything you need is there. i didn't actually "see" dallas (i couldn't even find the skyline- LOL!!! ) but next time i go down, we'll probably get a chance to see the city. i've heard there are some really terrific restaurants there, and a wonderful zoo to take the kids to.
i know about unbearably hot. i've been to florida in august. ;) we almost moved to florida, so the texas climate won't be much different (at least they have SEASONS!!!!) And, i'll get to see my ny islanders once or twice a year when they play the stars. ;)

Uh, I wouldn't count on it. The Stars are in the Western Conference and the Isles are in the Eastern. Kinda like the Wings and Maple Leafs, interconference games are scarce because the NHL wants teams to play each divisional opponent 12 times a year or some ridiculous amount. You should just buy the NHL Center Ice package. Anyway, good luck with your move.

Anyway, good luck with your move.

yeah, that's why i said once or twice. ;) and thanks...if we ever sell this place.

The Islanders might make one trip to Dallas this year, depending on schedules.

This year the Montreal Canadians and Toronto Maple Leafs don't come through Edmonton.. You'd think that with Hockey being so big up here again, they'd strive to have more "Hockey Day In Canada's (when all six Cdn teams square off) but sadly this season there is NOT one. The NHL schedule in it's current form is a joke!

But don't worry, though, you can at least see San Jose, Anaheim, Phoenix, and the LA Kings at least 4 times vs the Stars!!!

I know, the Wings play Toronto maybe twice a year but we get to see the Wings play the Columbus Blue Jackets 8 or 12 times  ????

i know about unbearably hot. i've been to florida in august. ;) we almost moved to florida, so the texas climate won't be much different (at least they have SEASONS!!!!) And, i'll get to see my ny islanders once or twice a year when they play the stars. ;)

Make sure to check out the West End marketplace in downtown Dallas - a fun place of shops, restaurants, bars, etc. It's one of the key places to be on a weekend evening. Downtown Dallas is also known for its famous "6th floor museum" where President Kennedy was killed. That's within walking distance from the West End marketplace. A good place for live shows is Deep Ellum which is very close to downtown. Of course I haven't frequented there in quite some time (I guess I'm too old :) )
For your kids, the Fort Worth Zoo is a "must". It's one of the best zoos in the country. The Dallas Stars (and the Mavericks - basketball) play at the American Airlines arena which is downtown as well. I've never actually been there but it's very easy to spot from the freeway. Both teams used to play at Reunion arena - also downtown - which is right next to Reunion Tower. Reunion Tower is the big lit up "ball" that you see when you see pictures of downtown. It's actually a revolving restaurant (or was. Again, it's been years for me). So check it out sometimes and go have a drink and get a really good view of the city.

Also, Austin is only about a 3 hour car ride away. San Antonio - about 4-4 1/2. You have to go through Austin to get to San Antonio. Houston is in a slightly different direction - I want to say about 4 -5 hours depending on where you want to go. If you ever want to go to the Gulf of Mexico for a day at the beach - don't go to Galveston. Galveston is very popular but I don't know why. It's the nastiest beach I've ever seen. Instead, check out Padre Island - much much prettier.
