PS- Stole this page from Fernando Ramirez...remember that dude? He has a kick ass band and he used to come here often. Good dude.

Thanks for the props, Deano. My hits went from 40 to about 240 overnight!

Yeah, I would agree that if they could get Mutt, the end result would be better than ANYTHING the band has ever produced.

I don't know if the boys would have the patience to work with Mutt, though. It would mean disappearing and recording for a year or a year and a half... progress would be slow. Plus it would be a while before this could happen, because he's recording Shania's new album right now. I know Neal likes to be spontaneous, and he generally likes to do his albums quickly for the most part. And Mutt doesn't. He likes to take his time. In addition, I don't know if they would get along personally. Neal and Friga have egos... those could present a problem as far as letting Mutt do what he wants with the band.

Interesting idea, though... with Mutt as the possible answer. With JSS, it would have been ideal. With the new guy (whoever that ends up being)... who knows.

I agree. Mutt is a great producer, but he can't produce Perry's vocals

Even if he could, they'd have to be at the top of their game to even come close to equalling those two albums.

This is a part of the scenario where Journey would actually have the chance to work with ML.

In the real world, tho, not only ML is too busy producing Shania, but - sticking to my initial opinion on this - I highly doubt it that ML would TAKE the Journey job.If I were a big time producer like he is,I'd check the industry radar a bit before buying the plane.
Well...Journey Airlines have too many casualties. Not a safe flight.

Lange doesn't need Journey. I doubt, with Cain and Schon wanting to conserve the 'legacy' bullshit, they would do what he wanted. Too old and too opinionated. I remember Mutt producing a british band in the 70s called City Boy, big hit was '5705' in 1976, thats where he learned and crafted all that multi-layering attention to absolutely every sonic detail approach. It came home to roost with ACDC and his signature sound often overshadowed the artist. Genius that he is, Brywool mentioned Bruce Fairbairn (RIP) he delivered some of the best rock albums ever - Aerosmiths Permanent Vacation and Pump, Honeymoon Suite's Big Prize etc etc and his sometime understudy Bob Rock did the biz too. Fairbairn had the ability to get awesome sounds to tape (and later disk) without diluting the integral sound of the band. Thats my only real criticism of Lange, he can stamp his sound too much on a band, hence all backing vocals and drum programming sounds the same on Leppard and Adams? His sales figures say people like it though, so who am I to knock it...?

I meant exactly what I said. I think that ESCAPE is the band's best effort, hands down. But with Mutt at the helm (writing, producing), they could produce something BETTER than ESCAPE... even without Perry.

The best thing would be to have Perry re-join them with Mutt producing. Then we could have the album of a lifetime.

Now, bear in mind that Perry is my 2nd favorite singer of all time. I love the man, and believe that he is one of the 10 best singers of ALL TIME. (Only Freddy Mercury is above him in my mind.) But you can't pin all the the success of ESCAPE singlehandedly to him. There was a great band behind him. Schon and Friga contributed as much as he did.

The proof is in the pudding. Perry, on his own, has never produced anything even close to the majesty of ESCAPE. Or sold anywhere near as many records as ESCAPE did. Left to his own devices, and without collaborating with people who won't take shit from him, and pull the best out of him.... his work has always been sub-par to his ESCAPE work.

Now, if Perry (solo) hooked up with Mutt for his next album... then anything they could do together would be better than ESCAPE. :D

Much better dude. You have failed to account for the impact that the Leppard/Shania bg vox would have on a Journey record. Imagine that and you will understand why this is such genius. Not to mention the back tracking, techno scatting (is that a word?) and overlayered production, and Journey finally becomes the slick corproate rock band they've always been accused of.

Fernando - They were very 70s rock, bit of Queen in there, hints of where Foreigner 4 ended up, but also the guitarist was Mike Slamer from Seventh Key/Slamer/Steelhouse Lane/Streets. There are about 4 albums that are worth getting hold of. If you PM me I might be able to help.

there is a fan site for the band which gives all info www.cityboy.org

Albums were: Book Early (with 5705), The Day the Earth Caught Fire, Heads are Rolling and Its Personal - You'll see where he crafted it all - kind of his guinea pigs!

EXACTLY. I don't care who the producer is, or who the lead singer is, for Journey to produce a quality album, THAT is EXACTLY what needs to happen. But, there is no way in HELL that Journey will take a year off the road to write, record, and produce a quality album. NO WAY. It no longer makes them the money the way touring does.

Well the guys obviously have/had writing talent. Whether it equates to success in this day and age in very uncertain, but if they could write a song that does well in the charts, it would certainly help their ticket sales at the gates. With that said, I don't think those old dust farting, narcissistic money grubbers have anything left to write about. They're as burned out as a harlem warehouse. Sad as that is. Their chance died when they fired Jeff.

First of all, I said a "quality album"...not a hit. No matter who is singing, Journey will not have a hit anything.

Second, their chance at having any type of 'hit' died with they left Sony, or Sony left them - whatever you choose to believe. They gave up on that after Arrival.

Third, JSS never had a chance, and it was a pretty obvious to me from the beginning that he never would.

I know what you said, but I was responding to them being a touring act. Their touring would be bolstered by a hit single. I agree that won't happen.

I did really feel like they had a chance with Jeff. He's just a great frontman, and they did write some good music together. Again, whether it would be relevant in this day and age is anyones guess.

You are right on there! In order for Journey to have a hit now would require them to hire a strung out blonde around the age of 22 with a history of DUI's and subsequent automobile wrecks.. along with a gram or two of coke in her pocket when she's busted.

They left Sony AFTER Arrival.. yet there wasn't a hit on that album, as far as the music industry and radio was concerned.

Monker wrote:Third, JSS never had a chance, and it was a pretty obvious to me from the beginning that he never would.

Care to expand on that thought? Because, I am of the belief that there was something real cool that would have come from JSS being there. I think you missed the JSS interaction all along. I think Neal, the band and management missed it as well. JMO. Neither here nor there now, though. It's over for Journey.

Fascinating....so what you are saying s that because Mutt produced a couple Foreigner and Bryan Adams albums he is better than Elson? I think Mutt ruined Def Leppard...to hell with album sales, unless you think Britney Spears and Michael Jackson rock.... be serious.

Thanks for the info, Marc! I need to add this to the Mutt website. I noticed that Mutt didn't produce HEADS ARE ROLLING or ITS PERSONAL. I guess I'm just interested in the stuff that Mutt did. It looks like he did produce: CITY BOY (the first album), DINNER AT THE RITZ, YOUNG MEN GONE WEST, BOOK EARLY, and THE DAY THE EARTH CAUGHT FIRE. Wow, five different albums. Got that info from your link.

I did find a CD available here in the US on Amazon called ANTHOLOGY that includes the following:

1. 5-7-0-5
2. I've Been Spun
3. (Moonlight) Shake My Head and Leave
4. Dinner at the Ritz
5. Day the Earth Caught Fire
6. Heads Are Rolling
7. Bet
8. Hap-Ki-Do-Kid
9. Bad for Business
10. Modern Love Affairs
11. She's Got Style
12. Need a Little Loving
13. What a Night
14. Surgery Hours (Doctor Doctor)
15. Goodbye Blue Monday
16. New York Times
17. You're Leaving Me
18. Young Men Gone West

I heard some snippets and really liked some of the songs. It DID remind me a lot of Queen... definitely influenced by Freddie Mercury's tracks. And I heard some harmony guitars ala Brian May as well. And as you mentioned, there is some FOREIGNER there, too. I need to get this stuff!

Thanks for the info!

Mutt is responsible for over 150 million unit sales.... Back in Black alone is at 42 million... Shania's catalog is over 50 million now....

Elson may be good... but Mutt brings home the bacon... and THAT is a producers job.

Fascinating....so what you are saying s that because Mutt produced a couple Foreigner and Bryan Adams albums he is better than Elson? I think Mutt ruined Def Leppard...to hell with album sales, unless you think Britney Spears and Michael Jackson rock.... be serious.

What's fascinating is your lack of a brain. Lose the fucking attitude and use yer brain for a minute. Oh and by the way, "what you think" is your opinion... and thats all it is... the QUESTION was could Mutt help Journey climb back up the charts... your opinion means dick.

Read the list... ACDC, Foreigner, Leppard, Shania, Bryan Adams.... Major labels don't hire producers for artists for the sake of "creating great music"... they hire them to push the artist, create MARKETABLE music, and do it UNDER BUDGET... AND Artists don't AGREE to giving a producer points (READ: a cut of the profits) unless the relationship results in sales.... cause no sales equals no contract... get it idiot?

Mutt is a more relevant producer... what he produces GETS PLAYED... Elson doesn't have that kinda pull... so get a fucking clue.

It's all about UNIT SALES.

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Amen, some sense at last. Elson's not even in the same ballpark. He's a washed up fart who had his day in the 80s with a few rock bands and settled on doing Journey's front of house mix (which was shit in Nottingham). Look at the bands that Lange 'developed' and created incredible sales for: Leppard, Adams, Foreigner, ACDC - they all achieved staggering sales after his producing and, often more importantly, co-writing'. Its a midas touch. As mentioned, producers don't get points if they arent perceived to have a big artistic impact on a recording. Get real.

Mutt WAS a relevant producer. Other than Shania Twain's albums, what has he produced recently that has sold well?

Maybe Mutt doesn't want to produce crap, which is all that sells these days.

I agree. JOURNEY made Kevin Elson, NOT the other way around.

Elson may not have the name recognition but he totally works for Journey which is all the matters.
To me he's the anti-Shirley given the sheer rock quotient of Generations compared TBF and Arrival.

He's not moved on though, that abortion of a second album for (the worst UK export) The (fucking) Darkness shows he's not learned anything since his days with Queen. Mutt, I assume is counting his shekels and attending to his family...

Thanks for the info, Marc! I need to add this to the Mutt website. I noticed that Mutt didn't produce HEADS ARE ROLLING or ITS PERSONAL. I guess I'm just interested in the stuff that Mutt did. It looks like he did produce: CITY BOY (the first album), DINNER AT THE RITZ, YOUNG MEN GONE WEST, BOOK EARLY, and THE DAY THE EARTH CAUGHT FIRE. Wow, five different albums. Got that info from your link.

I did find a CD available here in the US on Amazon called ANTHOLOGY that includes the following:

1. 5-7-0-5
2. I've Been Spun
3. (Moonlight) Shake My Head and Leave
4. Dinner at the Ritz
5. Day the Earth Caught Fire
6. Heads Are Rolling
7. Bet
8. Hap-Ki-Do-Kid
9. Bad for Business
10. Modern Love Affairs
11. She's Got Style
12. Need a Little Loving
13. What a Night
14. Surgery Hours (Doctor Doctor)
15. Goodbye Blue Monday
16. New York Times
17. You're Leaving Me
18. Young Men Gone West

I heard some snippets and really liked some of the songs. It DID remind me a lot of Queen... definitely influenced by Freddie Mercury's tracks. And I heard some harmony guitars ala Brian May as well. And as you mentioned, there is some FOREIGNER there, too. I need to get this stuff!

Thanks for the info!

well not actually Lenny but me (Shaggy -her better half **cough cough** I'm so dead when she reads this post).....

Mike Slamer released an awesome album last year called Nowhere Land under the band name of Slamer, with Terry Brock on vocals. Stunning album and well worth getting your hands on.
