Somewhat OT - Most depressing songs

Postby Zan » Thu Sep 06, 2007 12:01 am

It can be Styx related, or not. What would you say are some of the most depressing or sad songs ever recorded?

Mine would be:

Cats in the Cradle
Hell is for Children
Vincent
Wildfire

Any others you can think of?

BAH! I was going to mention Seasons in the Sun.

How about "Cherish" by Kool And The Gang.

"If you receive your calling before I awake, will I make it through the night?"

Nothing like a song about wondering what will happen if your mate dies in her sleep. Has to be one of the absolute worst/corniest lyrics ever. It makes DDY's "Boys Will Be Boys" look like Stairway to Heaven.

One - Metallica
Serious Wreckage - Steve Walsh

Having lived in a military town for 18 years, that is one melody that gives me goosebumps every time. They also play it every Remembrance Day in Canada.

As long as we are going in THAT direction.

On Eagles Wings. Ugh...after about a dozen family funerals with that song, my mom REFUSED to have it played at my dad's funeral and told us kids if it was played at her funeral she would come back and haunt us.

Honey-Bobby Goldsboro
Teddy Bear-Red Sovine
Daniel-Elton John

I agree with Zan..

After this past week, I don't know if I can listen to "In The Living Years" ever again. Hell, I'm starting to get teary eyed just thinking about the lyrics. I was sad before, but now it hits so close to home on so many different fronts.

Y'all have named most of the good ones I know.

I will say, DDY writes a poignant song when he wants to: Won't Go Wasted and Goodbye Roseland already named above. Also I think Harry's Hands fits as well as Outside Looking in Again and even Black Wall. Crossing the Rubicon is sure a song with some sad undertones.

I will throw out some country stuff I think qualifies and that I really like:

The Dance – Garth Brooks
A Bad Goodbye – Clint Black
Whiskey Lullaby – Krause and Paisley
Tonight I want to Cry – Keith Urban
I Wonder – Kellie Pickler (Don’t laugh! This is a sweet, poignant song about the mother she never knew)
Hard Candy Christmas – Dolly Parton
If You Get There Before I Do – Collin Raye (This one makes me cry every time I hear it)

Bugsy
Change your hairdo. Change your name.
Congratulations! You're still the same.

Gotta add another Styx one (and Zan, you'll appreciate it)....

All In A Day's Work...

(this would also get a vote as an underrated Styx song)

Not to be nitpicky or anything, but if you're talking about the Mike + the Mechanics song, it's just "The Living Years". Say it loud, say it clear. :P
