styxfanNH wrote:For four decades, James “J.Y.” Young has been to hell and back.

The sole remaining original member of the rock band Styx, Young told KTW the fact he can still take the stage is like he died and went to heaven.

“To me, the greatest joy I find in my life on a regular basis is when I’m on stage performing and there’s this incredible reaffirmation and love for what we have collectively created,” he said, noting, however, it hasn’t always been roses. (OK, GOOD So Far)

On tour with Def Leppard and Foreigner, Styx will perform solo in Kamloops on Sept. 28 at Interior Savings Centre.

Along with longtime member Tommy Shaw, Young is the only other member in the band from its heyday.

While two of the original members died, Young said the mysterious absence of founding member Dennis DeYoung, the man behind the cult classic Mr. Roboto, was based on philosophical difference.

“We philosophically parted company with our original keyboard player [DeYoung], who was obviously instrumental in our success in the beginning. (OK, Still GOOD So Far)

But I would say, since 1982, has been quite the opposite — and we finally decided it was time to go on without him,” said Young. (Still OK, GOOD So Far)

“[Styx], to me, was a progressive rock band that took a couple of very wrong turns in the late ’70s and early ’80s — and that, among other things, broke the band up for 13 years.

“But this whole thing has really evolved into a true labour of love in the sense that our music has had a profound affect on people in ways that we never dreamed,” said Young. (OK, Still GOOD So Far, nothing really offensive)

So where is the outright Dennis bashing that we usually get from JY? A lot has changed here. Nice to see some of you trash him without reading the article.
There's no our current keyboard player is better than the one he replaced. No runs circles around his predecessor. Just "our original keyboard player". Doesn't get much tamer than that, even from JY[/b]

Let me give you a quick grammer lesson since you, Zan and a few others seem to be failed recipients of the joke of the US Public school system..

Opposite means contrary or radically different. So when one says - We philosophically parted company with our original keyboard player [DeYoung], who was obviously instrumental in our success in the beginning. But I would say, since 1982, has been quite the opposite — and we finally decided it was time to go on without him,” said Young.

That means since 1982 the original keyboard player [DeYoung] was the opposite of their success. Meaning he was a failure or the cause of failure. None of that is true. 3 of the band's 8 top 10 hits came after 1982. All were written and sung by Dennis. JY nor Tommy had a charting single on Billboards hot 100 after 1982.

When I see bullshit, I call it.

Counts as charting, but not so much helpful of Styx (since the crux of the argument seem to revolve around charting post-82 being "instrumental to [Styx's] success" or not.)

Personally, I think that's a broken quote, but I don't really care enough to actually....y'know, care.

Curious - not to argue, but why would Damn Yankees count. DDY had nothing to do with Damn Yankees. Damn Yankees success would have been immaterial to Styx success. Perhaps I'm missing something.

Ha, true. But *I* was also taking into account post-Styx solo/other band careers. But if you're going on the technicality of it being only Styx, the original intent is correct. But that's also like saying the same isn't true of pre-1982, either. DDY's track record with Styx during the classic years is documented by the numbers, so I'm not sure even why people would bother arguing it.

Hate the man now if you want, but facts is facts.

Right.

As far as I can see, it breaks down to some folks taking the JY quote to mean that in his opinion DDY made no contributions to the success of the band post-82, and they're arguing otherwise using charts/sales as their primary examples. Thus, solo projects & the like sort of fall outside the scope of the pointless bitc....uh, discussion.

And stuff.

Yup. Funny how people can twist things to their own meaning. Goes for sales statistics, too (see any DDY thread which talks about his success in Canada, and then people have to complain that it's Quebec mainly ...).

For the record, I don't think JY is that stupid to say that DDY made no contributions to Styx post-1982. He may not have loved them, but he certainly made money off of them. His comment is most likely hinting at the proverbial fracturing of the stone around Kilroy. There are plenty of people in this world I do not like very much, but I can still work with them. If it ever becomes an impossible situation, you deal with it. They dealt with it as they saw fit, right or wrong.
