I finally met Mr. Shaw this afternoon

Postby mr.v » Wed Oct 17, 2007 1:23 pm

He did a meet and greet at the Madison (Nashville) Tn. Sam Ash Music store. Really nice guy. I didn't have time to talk to him much but he was kind enough to autograph a couple of his solo LP's for me and autograph a picture for my 12 year old daughter who is still ticked that I wouldn't let her miss school to meet him.

That's three down, one to go for me. I've now met Tommy, Jy & Dennis. I would like to meet Chuck sometime. On the friendly scale (and all of these were short meetings I would rank them...

Tommy
Jy
Dennis

Has anyone had similar experiences?

By the way my buddy asked him if he was still a vegatarian (sp?) and the answer is NO. He said he started eating meat again about 2 years ago after being a vegatarian since around 1984.

the times i've met Tommy, he's always been kind and gracious. He is very good with remembering people, and every time i see a show, i always get a smile and a wave, sometimes a guitar pick. :D Generally speaking, they all have been kind and accommodating to fans. The only one i haven't met is DDY, so i can't say anything about him.

Tommy really is a nice guy. I heard about that appearance on the radio a few weeks back. Unfortunately, I'm out of town as luck would have it and I'm not going to make it back for tonight's show. Oh well . . . I really do like the Wildhorse and would have loved to have seen the band there, but those are the breaks. Everyone who goes tonight, let me know how it was!

Congrats, Vince! Tommy has always been great to me. Although, I'm not sure I could rank them so easily. My experiences have been really good with all of them. I'm really happy for you!

He is obviously referring to the 4 surviving members STYX.
Not the replacement players.

I was lucky enough to have met John. Now I want to meet Dennis, JY and Tommy some day.

I've met Chuck, John, Dennis, Tommy, JY, Todd, and Glen. I haven't met Ricky or Gowan. Out of them all, JY is the coldest - on many levels. DDY doesn't do a lot of "meet and greet" stuff, but when he does, he's very gracious. Todd and Tommy are as nice as can be, but TS has been more reclusive as of late. Glen is very approachable and friendly. Chuck and John were also very nice.

For the most part, my experiences with the band in person have been on the up and up. It was only when I met JY in 1996 that I got the sense he was not an easy guy to get to like.

Who I met

Postby cittadeeno23 » Fri Oct 19, 2007 5:15 am

I did 'High Five' Glen at an Edge show! I don't consider him a member of the Real Styx, but I do love his work with and without Styx.

I talked to JY once live during rockline. We talked about Cyclorama and he did say a few negative things of course about Dennis without mentioning his name.
You know, the old "former Keyboardist" routine!

JY is the coldest

Postby cittadeeno23 » Fri Oct 19, 2007 5:21 am

Allan, I will just assume that JY is the one who has given you trouble in the past about your website!

Whoever it was, that's too bad. You have a lot of cool stuff and you actually help the band in my opinion.

By the way, were you at the San Jose Genesis show?? What did you think of 'lovely' Downtown San Jose!!!
It was a great show. I just was dissappointed that they cut off Tonight, Tonight, Tonight before the cool instrumental part.
I thought 'In this Cage', 'Domino' and 'Home by the sea/2nd home by the sea' were the highlights.

That I was... but I would like to meet Ricky, Todd and Larry as well. I have had e-mail conversations with Chuck and he was very nice and Glen sent me a chord chart to one of his songs when I asked about it on his message board. Over all, all of the guys have been nice enough.

I think you're confusing me with the other Styx site that got a cease and desist. I've had no problems with my website. I'm just saying that JY, in my experiences, is just not Mr. Warm and Fuzzy. Doesn't make him the next coming of Satan.

I saw Genesis twice on this tour - Twickenham and Boston. My business trip to Mountain View was cancelled, so I didn't go to the SJ show as well. Personally, I could have done without either Domino or Home/Second Home. Both were not needed, and without Tonightx3. Big hit, so that was going to be there, but one too many epics IMO (and I love Genesis).

JY is matter-of-fact is all. He's also scary smart, which makes being in his presence intimidating if you're not prepared for it. Been there, done that. Got the dunce cap.

I remember the first time I met JY was after a JYG gig in Ft. Lauderdale, and in my infinite wisdom, I decided to go with the "16 Magazine" advice and ask him about solar power since that can "keep JY talking for hours." I say, "So, you still doing the solar thing?"

And he looks at me like I've got 3 heads and says "Uh...yeah. What do you think this was?"

And it dawns on me that he thought I said SOLO. At which point, I composed myself (after nearly laughing myself stupid) and repeated myself. He got me the second time, but I'll never forget the look on his face when he thought Iwas asking him if he was still doing solo work. lol

Congratulations Vince on meeting Tommy !!! :D I enjoy reading these stories from everyone :)

I met Dennis
, first time in 1990. I was pretty much speechless then and my brother had to most of my talking - LOL :D Dennis and Suzanne have always been wonderful to my family, friends and I. They have really gone out of their way on many occassions, way too many to mention. I still owe him for a friendly baseball bet :)

It was really weird when my Dad and I went to visit my brother in NYC and we all went to the concert together and I introduced my Dad to Dennis. That to me was a Twilight Zone moment - LOL My dad and him were sharing stories about me and both laughing - LOL

I first met and talked with Glen back in 1999 and then again a few times after shows with Dennis. GREAT, GREAT guy, very down to earth and real fun to talk with. He also went out of his way for me on a few occasions for pictures with my family and friends. Always seems upbeat and positive.

I first met JY in 1990, I could tell he didn't want to be at the signings back then, IMO.

I interviewed him back in 2003 on the tour bus (yes, I'm bragging like usual). I talked with him backstage before the interview for quite a while. He was very nice to talk with and we didn't run out of anything to talk about - LOL

I met and talked with Larry very briefly in 1999 and for a moment in 2003. I can't say anything bad about him, very down to earth, IMO.

I'm hoping to meet Tommy someday and actually talk to him. I didn't have time to talk to him, Todd, Chuck or Larry before the show in 2003. bummer......

I didn't find him intimidating at all. And I certainly don't expect warm and fuzzy - I've interviewed enough people (and yes, some outside of Styx) to know this is the way it is. I don't lose sleep over the fact JY and I will never be best friends lol

Here's a good one for you that tops your JY story: I was at the Philly (well, Camden) show in 1996. I had just interviewed Dennis a few days earlier and he mentioned he had a cold. So after the show I was going through the meet-n-greet line and I happened to ask Dennis how he was feeling, and said still a bit under the weather. NOw, not thinking since I also happen to be a musician, I said something to the effect of "I could tell because you sounded a bit flat at times". I didn't see his reaction but my friend said if looks could kill.

Now, he couldn't have been that pissed because the next day in Hartford I took pics of him for the Keyboard article and he was nice as can be.

omg. And you're still HERE to tell about it? LOL! Classic, Allan!

OK, I have a funny story relating to Tommy. Back in 1991, when Styx and Damn Yankees were touring simultaneously, some of you may remember an incident with Tommy, Jack, and some policemen backstage at a Styx show when Tommy was stopped by Dennis' manager (Keith) after he & Jack tried to go back and see the band. Anyway...flash forward a few months.

So, I'm backstage at a Damn Yankees show, it's the 2nd time ever I'm meeting Tommy, and I'm all jazzed. The guys all walk in at the same time to the M&G room. I was towards the back of the room because I wanted to collect my thoughts before talking to Tommy - you know, to avoid saying anything stupid. So, no sooner than T walks in, some guy says "Hey Tommy, do you when Styx is releasing their next album?" (and I'm quietly dying inside of discomfort for the guy and for Tommy, as anyone who knows anything knows Styx and Tommy are not on the best terms). Tommy smiles and calmly says "No, I'm sorry - they don't tell me anything."

So, Genius here yells, "Yeah! They don't even let him backstage!"

Ayup. For awhile after my friend told me, I was mortified. Then I got to the point I had a good laugh and didn't give a shit because I wasn't trying to be a smartass - the musician in me was just calling it like I saw it. Inappropriate? Hindsight is 20/20, but the comment was not completely out of line.

I once said directly to the singer in my old band she was flat. She didn't like it either, and dare I say, threw more of a hissy fit than Dennis ever probably did.

And for all of you out there that think I just suck up to Dennis or anyone in Styx, I present you that story above as a reminder that I don't need to or care to do that. I like my pride intact, and I'm not a shill for anyone.

I had a *very* nice experience meeting JY. Glen, Todd and Chuck were backstage (and they were all awesome, btw) the time I was lucky enough and fortunate enough to have such a great friend who gave me a pass to get to go. It looked like none of the rest of the guys was going to come back there, but then JY walked in. This one girl who had come back there solo (or is it solar?) was falling all over him and he seemed a bit bemused. I don't know what possessed me, but I said, "Well, if you're just handing those (meaning hugs) out for free like that..." and he gave me a big bear hug. Didn't really talk to him other than that - just kinda enjoyed basking in The Presence and watching that other girl who thought she was oh-so-hot make a complete nimrod of herself. To this day, I regret not asking someone to take a picture of him and me together. The nimrod got one - I'm sure he would have obliged.
My next husband will be an orphan.
