Gowan may be more 'technical' but does that make him a better musician?

Technically, yes. lol

What songs has Gowan penned that come anywhere close the the quality of the songs DDY wrote or influenced during Styx's heyday?

What does that have to do with either of their keyboard playing abilities?

Nothing, but 'technically' good musicians are a dime a dozen...creative ones are not. Same reason I was against Gowan (or the other newbies) receiving that 'lifetime achievement award' recently...they've contributed nothing new to add to the legacy, and certainly weren't around when it was being created in the first place. All they are is a tribute band, at this point.

(I'm not a DDY-supporter, either. He was a control freak and likely pi$$ed off everyone else in the band. They shouldn't get back together with him if they can't stand each other...I just don't like when JY comes out and tries to dismiss DDY's existence/contributions. As far as I know, DDY hasn't done the same to JY, but I certainly don't know the whole story!)

Dennis has handled the whole thing with class...unlike the two weasels.

Class? HE SUED THEM!

Take off your rose colored glasses Rajah. Also look at the calendar. The band has moved on, why can't the fans?

Rightfully so..He owned the GD name! Is he just supposed to say, "OK guys, you won't let me participate. Won't pay me. Keep using my picture on your advertisements, and creating an illusion I am still in the band, and yet I'm not allowed to do anything about it?"

I said he handled it with class. I did not say he should have been a p*ssy.

Get your rose colored glasses off....put down the bathwater.

Thanks for the laugh. Have you ever read these boards for any length of time?

As for class, both sides didn't do the best job of handling the situation early on - this is pre-lawsuit I'm talking about. Speaking as someone who got caught in the middle for a DDY interview I did, I can tell you it was ugly.

You know none of this is as cut and dry as some would make it out to be. Let's face it, when you have shared business interests and it isn't a voluntary severing of ties, sometimes the only way to get to resolution - for both sides - is through a lawsuit even though one side initiates it. I'm not defending what Dennis did and the results of the lawsuit are sealed, but it's clear both sides got something out of it in the end that worked. Since then, both Tommy and Dennis have toned down the rhetoric massively. JY is much better than he used to, but there's no pleasing some around here. Everyone is going to say something that will piss off a "camp" sooner or later, or say/do something that a "camp" with twist to mean something it doesn't. Welcome to the boards.

"Why can't the fans move on?"

Postby kipthekid » Thu Oct 25, 2007 6:30 am

Some - including many on this and related boards - moved on immediately. Those were folks that preferred (primarily) Tommy and to a lesser extent JY. Many, including those who supported Dennis, didn't then and may never move on. From a legacy/historical perspective, there IS no Styx without Dennis DeYoung, so this concept of "moving on" is pretty silly. If people don't like discussions around what has happened with the band, don't read the threads, the messages and don't contribute to them.

The Styx fan base, from my limited view, has never been a homogenous lot. It's what makes Styx music, legacy and fans unique among so-called middle-American "arena" bands from the 70's and 80's.

Move on? If everyone moved on, the passion around this band, for the masses, would cease to exist IMHO. What fun is that?

I say keep it going - keep talking about it. And keep listening to the music.

Allan honey, I've been here a very long time...

as for my own moving on comment...geez, I like the fact that both camps are out making music. Do you not see that we're getting the best of both here? Everyone is happy because they are doing what they want to do.

Dennis didn't own the name outright, btw. He also was getting paid. ASCAP and other music copyright laws take care of that. It's old news and it's just that, old news.

You guys do realize that the fan backbiting has been going on for what? A near decade now. What would you rather? The eight year slump that we had? I'm just happy to see the band and dennis touring. That's it.

Oh, and Rajah/kip/whatever personality you're using today....grow up. You can't be happy unless everyone is miserable.

Postby kipthekid » Thu Oct 25, 2007 7:37 am

What, you forgot your Midol today? Ee gads - what in my note even remotely deserves your whiny "grow up?" Also, why would you think that I and Rajah are the same person? Sheesh - you graduate first in your class at putz school? I will say this - you're nothing if not amusing.

Whether we're getting the best of both worlds is in the ear of the beholder. Many would agree and many would disagree.

I think you're sanctimonious cry that, because you said so, people should or should not discuss certain things pretty much obliterates any credibility you might have on this subject. Speaking of which...

How "long" you've been here is supposed to mean something? Who the hell cares? The fact that you either confused me with Rajah or were simply being a punk and lamely attempting to marginalize people who don't agree with you by lumping them together says alot more about you than how long you've been posting your warblings on a message board.

But, please - keep it up. It's quite amusing.

Chris made a good point (and one that has been made more times than even I can remember) that we should count ourselves lucky to have the opportunity to see and hear the music more often than we did between 83 and 90...or between 91 and 95. And if her or anyone else commenting on how stupid the continued in-fighting is affects you so much that you have to fight about that, well, I guess fighting is what makes you happy, not that this wasn't obvious to begin with.

As for seniority making a difference, I'll only say that Chris has had the same screen name for ten years. Rajah has had dozens. Most all of them starting out as defensive "newbies."

Actually it is true. A couple other handles for Rajah are:

Dan

and

Dee the Haberdasher

Yes, he tends to act like a newbie who is pained by the current Styx situation. What it equates to is that Rajah aka Dan, aka Dee is a troll.

As Zan pointed out, many of us have made this point over and over. Yet some are too effin' dense to realize that no matter what version of Styx you prefer - even if it's both - you can go see it. Period. 1996 and 1997 were gifts if you really think about it. After 1991 there may never have been Styx in any form. Hate Babe? Avoid Dennis. Hate Miss America? Avoid Styx.

The whole DDY owned the name thing was silly - I mean as part of the business entity that was Styx, he had a %, and still gets points on his songwriting, etc. I'm pretty sure he got all of that, but whatever. Financially, I'm not so worried for any of 'em.

Wow this is turning out to be the new Styxboard lmao.....and as for the in-fighting between the fans of each "camp", i've been a participant/observer for almost 7 years now(egads!) and after all that time I still can't believe these silly arguments are still raging. I'm finally able to enjoy a little of both Dennis and the current line up (did I mention one of mine and my boyfriend's favorite songs is "Yes I Can"?), after enduring an abusive marriage and terrible divorce I think this in fighting is nothing but childish and silly and I can't believe people have nothing better to do than argue useless points and dredge up a long dead horse. Sheesh!

Damn I used to love the Stones!!

Now its official......Fred's out!!!

There has been nothing but reruns of the Flintstones for years. Its been reported on MSN News that Barney, Betty, Bam Bam, Quizoo, Mr. Slate, Joe Rockhead, and a bunch of the Waterbuffalos have won the right to use the Flintstone name.

Fred will still be allowed to perform using his name but only as: 'Fred Flintstone, formerly of the Flintstones', or Fred Flintstone and something to do with the 'cave construction company' where he used to work.

Anyway, Freds out. How in the hell can they go on without Fred?????

Shit, Fred was the superstar. Barney is a star, but he will never make it without Fred.!!

F...ing Mr. Slate, Joe Rockhead who are they??? Just bit players who milked Fred & Barney for all it was worth.

You know if Wilma would of kept her mouth shut none of this might have happened.

Vacuum the damn cave 'woman'.

Who ever heard of a caveman getting some sort of prehistoric dust allgery??

It's all bullshit!!!!!

Fred ought to sue all their sorry asses!!!

Anyway here is the website for the article www.msnflinstone/fredsout.news.com.
