Now that the medley has been retired. wouldn't it be nice if they took the songs out of that and just played them in their entirety? A bunch of classics that could get there due. Now that would be a set change,

Gowan has done QoS. Thankfully he doesn't anymore. (And remember ... I don't think he's bad. Just on DDY-sung originals.)

For the 465,870th time here, there are a lot of folks who have no problem at all with Gowan's voice (or stage antics) and that is their prerogative. So any song he sings sounds fine to them.

I am one who would like every DDY song removed from the Current Styx setlist, foremost among them "Suite Madame Blue" because, my opinion, the band does not do justice to any of them, but that one in particular.

There are so many songs they could add to take the place of the ones they take out I feel a Current Styx audience would truly enjoy, that probably those songs would not be missed at all, except by a few diehards.

It sounds to me though that they are already leaving out too many of the "hits" for most of the casual fans - getting rid of the Dennis songs leaves them playing exactly 6 out of the 16 songs on Greatest Hits - the CD that most casual Styx fans would have.

I agree. Although I am a fan from long ago, I wouldn't mind hearing some of the new stuff. Just Be is a good song. These Are The Times. A couple songs from Brave New World. Plus, I really like Criminal Mind. Is that not considered an actual Styx song? They could take out Lady for Criminal Mind.

Mademoiselle would be over the top, EXCELLENT!! :D

I would like to hear Put Me On in it's entirety except for that goofy mellow middle 8 that Dennis put in there.

SMB and Criminal Mind are near lock-ins in a Canadian set. The Styx version of Criminal Mind is pretty good.

Me too. That whole song is a great distillation of the band's three-sided sound from that period. Kinda like "Come Sail Away," though obviously not as commercially potent. Too bad they didn't play it much back in the day -- it would have made a great show opener IMO.

Of course, the best place for the HMP riff is in a revival of "You Need Love." ;)

Me three. I have always liked this song a lot. The harmonies are terrific and the break in the middle showcases Dennis' voice very nicely.

I'm sure JY would love to do that, but being the hypocrite that he is they will stay in the set. Because he wants to get paid. He doesn't care that fans with Stynx's Greatest Hits will only hear about 1/3 of that CD in concert. By then he has already pocketed your money.

I'd surely have a bit more respect for them if they removed the signature Dennis songs from their set.

Everything except for Lorelei.... let JY continue to butcher that one nightly.

Oh for...this is so silly. The band will not lose some of the "signature songs". They do realize they are catering more and more to a nostalgia market. They may decide not to play some of the softer "poppier" tunes, but good heavens, let's be realistic here.

They're going to do what they're going to do. You either support it or you don't. But please, aim for some level of reality.

Bangs head into keyboard one more time. Sigh.

LOL! Sorry, Sadie! :D I am realistic enough to know they will NOT remove the signature Styx songs, even if DeYoung did sing and write them, because they are so well known and so much a part of the band's legacy.

Do I like how some of them sound with Gowan in the band? No. Would I like them to leave them out? Yes. But they haven't consulted me on their setlists, so...... :P

My only quarrel is with "Suite Madame Blue" because it is such a DeYoung masterpiece so closely identified with him. Again, that is my preference, but I fully understand why it is included in the Current Styx set, especially in Canada.

I can understand your feelings on this, and 7 or 8 years ago, I would have probably shared them. But I've heard them do the song sans DeYoung, and I have to admit, it's pretty damn good. His vocals do work with the song (not saying DDY's don't), unlike say, Babe or Best of Times, which I'd rather leave where they are.

Not to mention that there's more to that song (or, really, any song) than just the lead vocal. I saw them do SMB last year, and though Gowan's voice was a little inconsistent in the opening bit, the rest of his (and the band's) performance was fantastic.

Well, yeah. The issue is more with the vocals than the music itself which is still fine. Gowan's voice is inconsistent when he sings it, and it is a DDY signature vocal tune. His vocals are better here than on songs like "Grand Illusion", but they still kinda don't cut the mustard for me more often than not. Although again, if it's Gowan singing SMB or Miss America, give me SMB :)
