Perfect mascot for Stynx

Since half of their set includes 'cringe-inducing' songs, Stynx should use Cringer from He-Man as their new mascot:

Give it a rest. Outside of the few DDY tunes that Gowan sings (and that's my opinion; many like 'em sung by Gowan), there are very few if any cringe inducing songs. Some songs I may not love (see "Everything All The Time"), but cringeworthy? No.

Well, "Higgy" has seen them exactly zero times.
I'm not sure about my other 2 personalities. I'm sure I'm more people than just those! Can't I be Darwin too?! Why can't I be one of Froy's creations? Actually, as I've said before - all of us are just characters Zan created to argue with herself.

So let me get this straight, regardless of who you are, you have not seen Styx with out Dennis 1 time? Are you sure? I mean, you know exactly what they are playing, how many people they are playing to everynite and most importantly how badly they suck with out Dennis, but you have never seen the band live? Wow, if that's the case I really have to apologize not taking you seriously. I mean you must really know what you are talking about, being that you NEVER saw this version of the band. Once again, nice job.

I've seen Styx without Dennis twice and didn't care for it (ex who didn't know bought me tickets the second time so that's why I saw them twice) but I don't make a big deal about it nor do I slam the current version of Styx every thread here

Well I have heard the shitty albums, seen the shitty concert clips, heard the shitty keyboardist's voice, and know that my preference is for DDY songs in a Styx list.

BTW, I don't think I've ever talked about how many people were at a Styx show. That must have been some of my other "personalities".

I'm kinda in the CHICAGOSTYX boat-haven't been around in a long while because the argument is the same now as it has been for years.

That being said, I figure I'd come out of my slumber for a while, partly because I've missed the lunatics that frequent this board.

I am a DDY guy all the way, but I do like Gowan too. Since Larry joined the band, nearly every song that I like from the "New" Styx has been sung by Larry. See 'Fields of the Brave, More Love For the Money, Walrus, Don't Need No Doctor and Salty Dog'.

It's only when Larry covers Dennis' material that he sounds like a chipmunk. Singing his own material, he sounds just fine.

To those who think the newest incarnation of the band is great, that's fine with me. I prefer "Classic" Styx and always will. I have seen the band twice since 1999. The first time was about 3 years ago, when they were doing the Cyclo Medley...which I liked. I am one of those that think they should drop a couple of standards and play some old gems.

The second time I saw them was last year on the Def Leppard tour. Maybe it's because they've been on the road for so long, or maybe it's due to them only having 45 minutes, but they REALLY went through the motions on that one. The only person that didn't act like a zombie on stage was Larry. I would hardly call it "cringe inducing" but it was certainly cookie cutter.

I'm just glad Dennis FINALLY put out new NON BALLAD music. He seems much happier now, and unless he and JY specifically truly mend fences, I have no interest in seeing him back in the band.

Life's too short to sweat this 'real band' stuff anymore and nearly every band I grew up with is either a shell of it's former self, or God forbid has had deaths, so I just enjoy what little good music is put out nowadays and try to keep the BS out of it.

However, don't stop the bickering, it really does make for humorous reading.

Cheers! and it's good to be back! :D

The most sensible thing said in this whole thread.

Some just refuse to accept that Larry isn't trying to copy Dennis. He is interpretting the songs that best fit his singing style. Understandable that he is compared to Dennis, after all he replaced him. But in the times I have talked to Larry, he is very respectful of Dennis, he went out of his way when he joined the band to recreate the keyboard sounds Dennis used, and understands the history of the band.

Styx touring has songs that have to be played because they are part of the bands history, where Dennis has the luxury of not having the same standard. It is the luxury of being a solo act. If Dennis played Tommy or JY penned songs, we would certainly hear from those that say he has no right to, but that is a discussion for another thread.

And some would be extraordinarily critical of any musician who joined the band in DDY's stead, no matter how they sounded. Let's not pretend that this is all about aesthetics.

Its probably more about booting the founding member of a band who led the band, through song writing and production, to an extremely successful career - then pretending he didn't exist. And when he is spoken about, its to humiliate him and his songwriting. Oh yeah, and the fans do it too because they just luuuuuuv Tommy!

It's always brave to write your nasty offhanded comment in small type. What else would I expect though?

Well I don't recall having "humiliating DDY in anyway, I still go see his shows. I did say I am over the lyrics for Babe, Lady and Lorelei , regardless of who sings them. Also, I am happy with the current situation in that I get to see Styx play a few times a year and I get to see Dennis once every 2 years when he passes through the area.
Would I prefer to have Classic Styx, yes. But, that can't be so I accept and am thankful for what they give us.
Styx doing 100 + shows a year beats Styx doing 30 to 50 shows a year, which is what DDY likes.

Funny...a friend of mine saw a show in 1981 where Dennis referred to Tommy as "Mr. Perfect" on stage when he was getting lots of female attention. "Well, look at Mr. Perfect," he said. By your last remark, I'd say the fan doesn't fall far from the stage, as so many of "those" DeYoungians liked to say about Tommy's loyalists back in the day. ;-)

(Should I have put that in small type?)

And his avatar has an album cover bearing the fake Asia, preaches about DDY back in Styx when he shows an avatar of an album featuring John Payne who is going on tour as John Payne's Asia, talk about hippocrit ...

Asia is and always will be

WETTON, PALMER, HOWE, DOWNES

So before you preach about band line ups change your avatar to an album cover featuring the real Asia and not the cover band, then people might take you seriously.

Speaking of Avatars, I thought it was great when you forgave Leif Garrett on Behind the Music. It took courage, man.

Oh, I think it would take a lot more than that.
