According to producer/engineer/mixer extrodinaire, Kevin Shirley, Journey has signed with Columbia Records to produce, promote and release their currently un-named forthcoming album.

Seems as though this may be a mistake on Kevin Shirley's site. Awaiting a response on his part.

I wish...but I think they're pretty sold on the Wal-Mart release idea.

Sony (Columbia) could still promote in some capacity. I'm not sure how this stuff works, though.

I checked his site, but didn't see that. Maybe I am not looking in the correct place?

Anyhow, the information from Shirley does seem plausible. Rumored facts:

1. 12 songs re-recorded, 12 new songs recorded (Arnel Pineda official/unofficial MySpace page)
2. Wal*Mart deal to promote/distribute CD (re-recorded?)
3. Columbia Records produce, promote, and release new album

Shirley, as producer, would know which company paying for the production right...I mean for Kevin it would be a huge difference if say the band were producing, or a big record company with deep pockets? Wouldn't he have to make decisions based on costs...I don't see how he could be confused about who is producing the album.

Scroll down to Journey and look at "New album 2008" and look to the right. It says Columbia is the "label" and that he Produced, engineered and mixed it.

You have to wonder WHY all of a friggin' sudden Sony wants to re-sign Journey? Do they think this album will do better than ARRIVAL? Question is, how much money are they willing to sink in and market this thing...I'm assuming Sony's involved with the DVD they're shooting this weekend, as well.

Didn't Pineda have a deal with Sony at some point?

Easy.

Re records, and that song called Don't Stop Believin.' Get anything to touch that and it's golden.

I think Pineda's was Warner. But what about some type of collaboration between Columbia and Wal-Mart in the works? WalMart as the US outlet with Columbia the label worldwide. Sounds like something Azoff could pull off.

If this were the case I'd do that. And the foundation as well.
And probably one or two of the neighboring structures.

They could release it on April 1, title it "gotcha fuckers!"

BTW - This is pure speculation on my part. I'm often good at piecing things together, but I sometimes put 2+2 together and come up with 5. So who knows?

This all makes sense to me. They have a singer who can deliver a sound close enough to the legacy sound to get casual fans, big wigs enough interest to give Journey one more try. I think Journey is giving it their all one final time, Steve P wouldn't come on board, so they chose Arnel. The name "Journey" is big enough in the music world to warrant one more final thrust, especially now that the corp shirts know they're not going to have to risk anything on a new sound or direction. We may be witnessing the end of Journey as we know it. It will be interesting to see if they go out with a bang or a pfffftt.

Yeah it will be, well I think they will go out with a bang - you know they are still a good band, and they will release a good album, no doubt about that. It's all just 15 - 20 years too late, that's all. And too many lead singer changes as well, not mention the impact Perry had. If Perry wasn't as good as he was, then I think Journey would be doing a lot better today, sadly he was that good and the masses, media, music industry and peers will always associate Steve Perry and Journey together. And for that reason alone, I strongly believe it's impossible for them to win a Grammy or a even have another hit single ever again. And its not that they are not good enough, by all means they were good enough to win a Grammy when Steve Augeri was at the helm, so they are more than good enough to win a grammy today!. Compared to most bands out there Journey still blows them out of the water, in my opinion.

Well shall see? time will tell.

Not one bit. The poster was emphasizing the way people associate Perry and Journey as one and are a bit reluctant to take anyone else at the helm seriously. Moreover, the quality of music is there in the poster's eyes, just not the validation by music industry peers.

Yep, my first thought was that when he updated that page, he just rep'd the line entry and didn't change the label field.
Who knows he may have purposely listed it that way just to see the reaction.
Does cause interesting speculation though.
