"Faithfully" On Idol

Postby Enigma869 » Thu Mar 06, 2008 1:41 pm

Anyone see this performance tonight? I thought it was horrendous. The girl performing it forgot at least 4 words that I picked up on. Randy went on about how Journey was near and dear to his heart. Paula babbled (as always) about loving it (along with everything else she seems to hear), and Simon even said it was ok. Geez...what the hell were they listening to? Anyone else like it? As I told my wife...When appearing on Idol, don't take on Perry or Elvis, because it will simply NEVER measure up!

Randy said "2 things near and dear to my heart DOGS & JOURNEY" when he started his response to the song.

Remember this is what RANDY JACKSON said, I did not put the word DOGS in his mouth. Watch the entire video and hear for yourself.

Here is the link.

I thought that it was bad as well. They went on about how it would be a great country cover. Hogwash. The ONLY way any Journey song could be done justice as a country cover would be if Gary LaVox from Rascal Flatts was doing the singing. This girl sucked and when the judges listen to it again, I'm sure they'll agree. I do agree with Simon though when he said she was "forgetable".

Bullshit. There are many Journey tunes that can be done as country covers. Deanna Carter does a great DSB. Very good cover.

Faithfully was covered by Faith Hill, I believe.

The girl tonight was cute, and did a good job. John from Boston, she has to change the lyrics up as it is written for a woman...duh. She did evade the high notes foir sure but who wouldn't? Randy is so confused. he doesn't know if he should be black, ghetto white or rock. He is a dick. He DID say "no one sings that song like Perry, Steve Perry." Nice

The girl tonight is really cute. Hell, she is even a west coast girl from Oregon.

Too bad she was not on YouTube a few months back. I'm sure Neal could love her a bit.

No argument from me there. I never claimed she wasn't easy on the eyes, but it's a singing competition.

Rockindeano wrote: and did a good job

Well, as I said, I thought it was dreadful. If you know you can't hit the notes a certain song requires you to hit, you simply shouldn't sing it! I actually agree with you that anyone with two brain cells connected should steer clear of even attempting to hit Perry's insane notes. That's precisely why I said anyone daring to take on Perry is out of their mind! Perry of 2008 would be no match for Perry of the early 80's, and nobody else in 2008 has a shot, either!

Rockindeano wrote: John from Boston, she has to change the lyrics up as it is written for a woman...duh.

I'll give you her changing "Oh Girl" to "Oh Love", but "Two strangers learn to fall in love again" came out as "Two strangers meant to fall in love again". While it may seem picky...If you don't know the lyrics, DON'T SING THE SONG! At the end of the day, she has sucked for several weeks, so I think it's time to send her home!

I did watch the show & was cringing when she sang it. True, no one can sing it like SP as Randy said. At the very least, it should have been one on the guys singing it (all the guy contestants were singing along behind her, so they like the song, too.) I've never watched American Idol before this season (except when I caught a few shows with Daughtry & was blown away)...I'm taken with the Australian singer & hope he continues on. The guy with the dreadlocks is good & sang, "Hallelujah" last night (I like Jeff Buckley's)...these two have charisma, the other contestants have good voices but not the "IT" factor.

Tammy, that's just it!

As RJ said, no one but SP can do that song justice, but Hell, she had the nerve and for that I give her points!

Seriously, maybe she wans the Journey fan points?

I haven't watched it, but my mother told me about this tonight -- she apparently really liked it, but couldn't remember which song was sung until I played a little of it on her piano. Then she asked me if I'd get her a Journey G.H. CD for her birthday. That will be an easy gift to remember!

That's true, she did have the nerve to take it on. I'm not keen on "countrified" songs. Did you see everyone swaying in the audience?

Yes, i did. That's just it. Everyone loves this song. I think perhaps people just know it and want it sung in some fashion, so it can be heard publically again.

Who does NOT like Faithfully? For real?

This is a shock to me to post something like this because with the rare exception, I HATE covers. But she wasn't that bad. She didn't start off good and it was sounding just like most of those Idol singers... affected and stupid. But she improved it a bit halfway through. She cut from the 1st verse into the 2nd though, which was weird, but maybe that was just shortening things up for time since they only get a minute or two.

What the hell was going on with Simon and Paula? While Randy was talking, she was practically in Simon's lap. :?:

Randy: "No one will ever sing this song like Perry..." :D Um. Duh.

I'm not either, but this didn't really sound that "country" to me. I'm not a country fan so if I'd sniffed out excessive countryness (its a word!!), I probably would have trashed this up and down.

And just having the nerve to take it on... well, I'll give her points for that. I sure as hell wouldn't.
Then again I can't sing for shit, so....
Randy would beat me senseless with his polka-dot guitar for disrespecting a Journey song that way.

I thought she did ok up until the point where she was supposed to hit the high note and it didn't happen. The changing lyrics doesn't bother me any. They have to shorten up the songs since they only have X amount of time up on stage. So, that is probably the reason why she jumped into the second verse. And changing "girl" to "love" only makes sense since she probably isn't a lesbian.

she did an ok job, i think alot of people here just want to hear perry sing these songs, and are not open to a straight cover, i think she changed the style/delivery of the song and didnt go for the high notes on purpose.
overall not bad
ive notice some songs i hate because they adapt them, because i have an emotional attachment to the original, and others i like when they change the delivery.
loved the change on the benetar song.
so to each his own.

She wasn't as bad as Cain, on vocals! I'll give you that. I still thought it was a dreadful performance, and I suspect because "Faithfully" is such a well known song, that the audience will be sending her home, after that less than awe-inspiring performance!
