I'll admit out loud I'm a Bears fan...which makes this good news for the team. That being said...one helluva a QB. One helluva an athlete.

It doesn't matter which team you pull for each Sunday. If you're a sports fan, you admire great athletes and great careers. Favre was the toughest SOB who I ever saw play the QB position. He's not the greatest QB ever, but the guy was a blast to watch! He played the game the way it's supposed to be played, and the NFL has a huge void, with his departure. Good luck to Aaron Rodgers trying to fill those shoes!

It's not really going to sink in until football season and no Brett on the field. So glad I'm a life long Packer fan.

Angie, you have great taste in music, but I rarely concur with anything you say.

Favre was one of the greatest to ever play ANY sport, and this is a national day of mourning.

You're all class 7. Angie is just being loyal.

Thank you, Rick. Have no time for Favre...sorry, it's a day of celebration for me! :P

As for concuring with me 7...not EVERYONE can be right all the time, you'll get better!

Am I the only one who finds it incredibly odd that Favre had no press conference to announce his retirement from the NFL? Favre has always been a bit of an attention seeker, so this just isn't consistent with his past behavior. Not to mention, I would think the fans of Green Bay find it even more odd than I do that he wouldn't have a press conference to say goodbye. I mean...what guy plays 17 years in the NFL and has his retirement announcement made through a voicemail he left of Chris Mortensen's (ESPN) cell phone? Hmmmmmm...I smell a "comeback" here! Something just doesn't seem right with this story!

he went fishing... and never came back---off season is all about speculation!!!, I also saw where Warren Sapp is retiring. I wonder if he (brett) would consider
going to another team at this stage and just retire from the Packers?? Like Junior Saeu (spell?) did.

That wouldn't make much sense, because if that were the case, he would only want to be on a team with a legitimate shot of winning. All of the teams with a legitimate shot to win already have QB's, and Favre's Packers were one game away from the Super Bowl, just this past season! I can't see Favre starting over at the age of 38 with a team like Miami (i.e. a team that has ZERO shot of winning anything, except a high draft pick)!

In response to Enigma -- It is not odd that he did not hold a press conference. He is not that way and believe it or not he shuns the media and really doesn't feel comfortable talking to them. For the last couple of years, he has actually announced his decision whether to play or not in his local newspaper, the Biloxi News, through a friend of his. They are saying here that he might have a press conference when things settle down or he might not. And, you're right, some people are saying he could change he mind (and believe me the people in Wisconsin would love nothing more) - who knows - only time will tell.... I think as time goes on, come May or June, he just might regret his decision.

John from Boston- Right now he could not go to another team because the Packers have him under contract until 2010. It will be interesting to sit back and watch in the next couple of weeks if any teams get in contact with the Packers to see about acquiring the rights to him via a trade or draft choice.

Angiekay - why do you dislike him so much???

We can agree to diagree on that point. As great of a player as I think Favre has been...his media attention, year after year about whether or not he wants to retire or not has been nauseating, for me! It has been Favre who has sought the media out to "announce" when he'll have an announcement about his future plans. I feel the same way about EVERY athlete...either play, or go away! Don't bother me with the annual "I might retire BS", because it just cheapens things.

For the record, it looks like he is having an official press conference tomorrow at Lambeau, according to the local (Green Bay) Fox affiliate.

I am in GB this week on business. Drove past Lambeau Field this evening. Watching the local news and talking to people here, you would think that a President or the Pope had died or something. The people here REALLY love Favre.

It's interesting to me that the Packers are not owned by some rich guy. They have more than 180,000 shareholders, people here in the community. They don't have to worry about the rich owner demanding a new stadium, etc. or threatening to move to another city. Amazing to me that a city of 100,000 people, not even one of the top 100 in the US in size, supports an NFL team the way it does.

Angie is blinded by greatness. The fact that she is in Minnesaota, blinds her honesty as to what a stud Brett Favre is. He dominated that pathetic division in which the shitty Vikings are a memeber of, and he did it with class and and he did it convincingly. He actually WON a Super Bowl, inlike that faggot fran Tarkenton who lost four.

The fact of the matter is if Angie had ANY class, she would shed her purple hood and give the Man a standing ovation, on his work, his achievements, and his class.

Brett Favre is a top 5 player of all time. Any REAL sports fan would recognize this.

Shame on you Angie. Your Vikings will NEVER win anything.

Not so sure about that. My man, Adrian Peterson, is going to give them a good shot if they can surround him with some players. THen again, Barry Sanders was great too, didn't help the Lions much though. :?

I agree with what's been said here. You have to recognize greatness no matter what team you root for. John Elway broke my heart year after year but I was in the front row when he came to Canton to be enshrined into the Hall of Fame and gave him a standing O like everyone else. Did the same thing when Terry Bradshaw and many of those dreaded Steelers were enshrined. ;)

Sorry Dean...I don't agree with this, AT ALL! In my opinion, Favre doesn't even rank in the top 5 QB of all time. Let me first say that I respect the hell out of Favre, and as I said earlier in this thread...He's the toughest SOB who I ever saw play the QB position. That said, he wasn't better than Montana, Elway, or Marino. You could make the argument that he is on the same level with Steve Young (I personally thought Young was a better player who didn't make nearly as many mistakes as Favre). I also think Manning and Brady will both be considered better than Favre, when their careers are done, by most football experts. Again, it's not a knock on Favre. The guy was a hell of a player, and was as gutsy as they come. I just don't think playing with the heart and guts that he exhibited throughout his career make him a top 5 QB.

I heard a sports writer who was born and raised in Milwaukee say that the legend of Favre was always bigger than the player he was, because he was such a likeable guy, and I agree with that, to a large extent. I've always considered Favre to be a very good player, but he always made far too many mistakes for me to put him in the top 5 QB of all time. A QB's most important job is to not make mistakes and cost your team the game. Favre has done that, a lot! Let us not forget that the last game that Green Bay lost was lost because of another ill-advised interception thrown by Favre! It doesn't diminish the GREAT career that he had, because ANYONE who can play in the NFL for 17 years, and NEVER miss a single game has my utmost respect, because I've never seen it happen before!

I just think when people honestly assess Favre's career, they have every right to applaud all of his great numbers, but they should also remember that he's thrown more interceptions than ANY QB, in the history of the NFL, and has lost the 3rd most fumbles, in the history of the NFL! I put him somewhere between 6-10, in terms of the greatest QB's to ever play, and there is nothing wrong with being a top 10 guy of all time!

I'm not going to lie, the last thing the NFL needs right now is for a legend like Favre to walk out the door. I know it was 17 years and he has to walk sometime, but it seemed like he had much left in him..some players overstay their welcome, and some walk away early, I see Favre walked away a year early, especially being one game out from a Superbowl birth. Well, I guess it's always good to go out on top..I'm a Steelers fan, and I will say that without Favre, something will definetly be missing!

He's 38. This is what 38 year old QB's do, if they're lucky enough and healthy enough to still be walking!

YoungJRNY wrote: it seemed like he had much left in him

I think saying he had "much" left in him is probably overstating things, just a bit. Let us not forget that before the 2007 season, Favre had two pretty abysmal years. The guy had FORTY SEVEN picks in his two previous seasons!

YoungJRNY wrote: I see Favre walked away a year early, especially being one game out from a Superbowl birth.

Maybe. I think most athletes would tell you (if they were honest) that they'd much rather walk away a year too early, than a year too late!

Going out on top is winning the Super Bowl, not costing your team a chance to get to the big game, because of a dopey pick!

That we agree upon! After 17 years, there will definitely be a void without Favre out there. Frankly, it's going to be VERY odd for me to see someone, other than Favre, lining up behind center for the Packers!

I agree about the mistakes that he has made in recent years but, you can't lay all of that on him. Some of it but, certainly not all. The mistakes come when he tries to do too much. In the last game, he gets the blame for the interception but, no one mentions that the Packers defense just fucking sucked in that game. A bad throw, yes. But, if he gets a little bit more mustard on that ball and gets it another foot, or so, inside and Driver catches it, touchdown...game over. He's a hero.

Being from Wisconsin I have seen pretty much every snap Favre has taken since '92. He has NEVER, EVER had strong talent (a superstar receiver) around him since Sharpe retired after the '94 season. He has never had a Jerry Rice or a Marvin Harrison. He plays outdoors in, what can be, pretty shitty weather. All of this makse a big difference.

Having said that, there was a time, in the MVP years, where he had the biggest dick on the field. He was an absolute monster back then and nobody was better. I remember during the '96 season when they played the Broncos. Michael Dean Perry came right through the line untouched. Favre was in a straight 5-step drop with Perry coming in full-steam. Perry lunges to try and sack Favre high and he had him dead-to-rights. Favre steps slightly to the side and stiff-arms Perry's helmet with his left hand and shoves him face down into the dirt and whips a touchdown pass to Keith Jackson. Perry stands up pulling turf out of his bent facemask and walks over to the Packers bench to give Favre a high-five.

Sure, not the technician that Manning is and he doesn't have the patience that Brady does but, there was a time when he was THE best player on the field.
