Kevin Chalfant's Journey cd...Was it an audition?

Postby jwarr » Mon Mar 31, 2008 5:21 am

Was KC auditioning when he released his Journey cd? I'm sure he knew of the vocalist situation in Journey. Especially since he's friends with Herbie Herbert & Neal Schon is friends with Herbie Herbert.
Hhmmmm!!!!

What's the title of this CD, and where can I purchase it? I looked on cdnow, but didn't find it there.

"Audible Shit" is what it should have been called, but they went with "Fly 2 Freedom" instead. Don't waste your money, man. It's terrible.

The vocals weren't bad, but it sounds like there's a karaoke machine bought from Wal Mart as far as the actual music goes. I've heard better playing on Guitar Hero.

Yep, a tad over-processed. Seemed kinda like a Boston sound put to Journey. Pretty good, but the overall sonic seems tunnel-ish to me. But I am a KC fan and wish he had the Journey gig. And Rolie too. Journey should have been a six-piece since way back when.

He did hire him, but Perry came along and implemented the "scorched earth" policy before he went back into hiding.

But this was recorded before Soto was let go... So how so? I am sure once Soto was let go it was used as one. But at the time of the recording Journey was not looking for a new singer. Correct?

Correct. But Kevin was scratching a long held itch. He needed his talents on record...for all to see and hear. Including those involved in the Jouney camp.

My thanks to Mrs. Perry for sending me the link to Chalfant's Journey cd. Let me say that I'm not at all familiar with Chalfant. All I know about the guy is that I've read on EVERY Journey message board, over the years, that he's been pining for the front man job in Journey, since the dawn of time, and had plenty of fan support, as well. After listening to his Journey cd (My thanks to Mrs. Perry for sending it to me), I must admit that I'm quite stunned, and not in a good way. I've heard soooooooo many people go on and on and on about how "great" this guy is. I mean sure...this guy can certainly sing better than I ever could. Having said that, there is NOTHING remotely remarkable about this guy's voice (sorry Mrs. Perry...I know you think he's great). I listened to every track and came away thinking "JAG" (just another guy)! This guy should NEVER be mentioned in the same breath with Perry. I also think Arnel has FAR more soul to his voice and sounds MUCH closer to Journey's "legacy" sound. After listening to the CD, it's pretty clear to me why Neal didn't hire the guy. He's about as close to Journey's "legacy" sound as Jeff was. The difference is that there were actually a couple of Journey songs that Jeff could sing (especially "I'll Be Alright Without You")! I can officially say that I'll never again understand the "buzz" surrounding this guy. With all the positive talk about the guy on Journey message boards, I honestly thought I would be blown away, listening to the guy. I've heard random people on youtube cover Journey's catalog better!

I think at one point Kevin would have been a shoo-in for the band, but after so many years, I don't think he would have had the sound they were looking for at his age. Certainly tuning down some of the material a half step would not have been a good idea if the intent was to impress the band. I think KC recorded the record more as a means to have something on record, as Andrew said, but more for himself and his fans than to throw his hat into the Journey ring. He himself denied the rumor that he was contacted about performing the Journey date in Virginia, and I personally don't know where that rumor came from as his name was never mentioned as a candidate for the job when I was the vocalist du jour. I think it was just something KC wanted to do to let his fans hear him sing the material, and maybe he felt that if Jeff was the permanent lead singer of Journey, that there would be a market for the vintage Perry sound through his recordings. He didn't just put the CD together in a few weeks. I'm sure he had been working on it when JSS was announced as lead singer in Dec 06.

I like his voice loads and though I don't have the Fly 2 Freedom cd
from what I have heard from it, he served up the songs swelley.
He put em out well enough for me as well on stage in South Bend.

I can't help but wonder if Neal Schon got upset with Kevin for being involved in The Storm and never gave Kevin a chance to sing for Journey because of it. Kevin was as good or better than Augeri IMO. Also, I wonder if Neal heard Kevin's Journey-covers CD and said, "Hey, if he can do it - why can't we? Let's put Arnel on some re-recorded classics and show the world how much better Arnel sounds." I'm sure there were other reasons behind the re-recorded classics, but I can see that being one of them, given the fact that Neal is so competitive.

anyone who was at the south bend show whould have to say kevin would have been a great choice journey, if they would have continued with him instead of doing the trial by fire stuff, it would have been very interesting, imagine the storm stuff with neal playing, and adding to the writing. i talked to him after his set and he seemed very interested.a local station played his version of seperatee ways and i could tell something was different i tought it was a live version, until they said it was kevin. no one said he was perry just an excellent fit to sing those songs, and write some excellent new ones in the same vein.

Journey was going to go forward in '94 as a 6 man band...with Kevin Chalfant singing, Jon Cain and Gregg Rolie on keys, Neal on guitar, Ross on bass and Smitty on drums. Perry go wind of it and made the decision to contact Jon Cain and put them back together with him, sans Rolie and Chalfant.

I can only hope that Arnel sounds better on the re-records than Chalfant. I am amazed to read the endless "Chalfant is God" gushings here, after listening to that cd. I truly don't get it, AT ALL! Heck, I played some tracks for my wife (who is a dope when it comes to music), and her response was "who the hell is that...that's not Journey"! That about sums it up!

I was there and I completely disagree as did many others...though I thought he did a nice job. Kevin's voice, like many singers his age, has changed. It was quite clear from the South Bend show that his days of potentially assuming the lead singer's role in Journey have long since passed. That said, the man does have a good voice. It's just much better suited for non-Journey stuff these days.
