Bill Graham concert 1991

I finally got to see the (infamous) Bill Graham concert thanks to the kind individual who posted it earlier today.

One thing that surprised me: I was expecting it to be a full "Journey reunion" but it was without bass and drums. Was a little surprised at this. Was the intention for it to only be Neil+Jon+singer?

I'm in agreement that it's definitely not Journey's finest hour. Steve seems to have trouble with his pitch, particularly with FAITHFULLY and ducks the high parts at the end. I chalk some of it up to the groove of the performance and lack of practice as there's a couple of better performances of him doing that song in 1994 on YouTube.

Yep, and he ducked the high notes after they were detuned significantly. Like 2 full steps.

Yep, that performance is tough to watch. How Perry went from that to sounding so much better in '94 and then still better in '96 is incredible. I guess he was just vocally out of shape there.

Yeah - I was just surprised to see them without those instruments at all. No Randy Jackson on bass and Mike Bair on drums; no Ross or Steve returning for the "reunion" or no one else.

I thought this performance was beautiful--poignant--the sound of Neal's guitar, minimal. Sad in more ways than one since this is the last time they were together, wasn't it?
