OT: Kevin Cronin on Don't Forget the Lyrics

Since REO is often a group discussed in this Styx forum, I thought I would mention that Kevin, and His Mouth, will be on "Don't Forget the Lyrics" Thursday, March 27. Fox.

The format of the show looks dumb, but I will give it a go. On the previews it looks like he is singing roll with the changes.

Well he did not sound very good did he, seemed to be really straining to hit notes. Interesting format for a celeb to get out of his element. Never thought I would hear him singing a Donna Summer song. I am embarassed to admit I did know the words to Last Dance. But why in the world he chose to sing that over Wild Cherry's Play that Funky Music is beyond me. That has to be the ultimate karaoke, drunk uncle at the wedding dancing tune. Is there anybody out there who hasn't sang that tune, at least to themsevles. I would actually like to see tommy of DDY go on the same show. Better still either of them on American Idol coaching the young kids through some Styx songs.

OK, a few things:

First, Last Dance is the same as Play That Funky Music - everyone on Earth knows it - it's sung at every karaoke and wedding in the world. I knew the words too, although, I'm in a corporate band, so, duh. lol

Second, he sounded really bad. I mean, really bad. However, I'll chalk 50% of that up to the "Live TV" factor I always bitch about. No one ever sounds that good on Live tv. But yeah. Bad. I didn't think "Brass in Pocket" was a song that *could* be butchered. Well, I was wrong. Very, very wrong.

Third, I'm totally on board with Tommy or Dennis, particularly Dennis - that is TOTALLY the avenue for him on national television. I could see that - and I'm sure he'd sound better than KC did. Hmmm, who do you think he'd use for his backups? It would be cool if one was Glen. That's who I'd choose

Wait, Glen forgets the lyrics to his own songs. Never mind.

Fourth: Anne Wilson & Mark Reno? lol

Lastly, I did enjoy the show, all-in-all. I know he chosen because of the PR thing with FOX ('cuz of the new movie and all), but hey - it was fun.

Whew! Glad I wasn't the only one who thought Kevin didn't sound so good. ("Brass in Pocket" You are right, Zan!)

That said, he was a very engaging presence and has a certain cute factor. I still contend he is the oddest shaped person I have ever seen.

But he was quite fun on the show with Wayne and I enjoyed it immensely. He won lots of money for his charity, too, so that was all good.

I have seen Dennis on a number of live TV programs and he sounded pretty amazing on them. I wish he could get a gig as a celebrity mentor/judge as he did on Canadian Idol. I don't see that happening on American Idol anytime soon, though.

I think Kevin's voice has always been day to day. Some days he sounds great, some days strained. Even going back to the 80s on YouTube shows this - go check out Can't Fight This Feeling from Live Aid 85. Kevin doesn't exactly sound great. Also, I would guess that live TV performances just have too many variables, the biggest being not getting a great monitor set up and/or proper sound check. But I think Kevin's always been an on again off again live performer. Seen REO three times, he sounded great twice, not so great on the third time. When you play as many shows as Kevin does, its bound to happen.

I think they can do alot of tweeking back on the sound board to correct vocal problems, I think they do that with Kevins voice as needed. Heck truth be known they probably do a lot of adjustments on vocals for most singers.

I was being kind actually Zan. My wife, who has met REO many times, was in the room at the time and I think she actually winced a bit during a couple of those tunes. Unfortunately, the last couple of times we saw the Speedwagon live, he did not sound much better. Part of the problem with KC, aside from back on the road again, he does all the lead vocals live...no rest for the weary. Yeah Glen reminds me a lof of the great John lennon, who also forgot the words to his own songs a lot.
