Falling In Between Live - DVD Comments thread

Postby hydraturnback » Fri Feb 15, 2008 6:44 pm

Hi All,
I must be the luckiest man alive..

I have been able to persuade my local store here in Melbourne to sell me a copy of FIB LIVE DVD. It is due to be released tomorrow here (16th Feb)...

And all I can say is WOW!! If there are any doubters out there - you MUST see this concert.

Also any doubts about the vocals are put to rest. The 5.1 mix (or in my case the DTS Mix) sounds fantastic. I remember LUKE saying that for 2ch it sounds a bit strange (or fixed) - but this DVD is so great.... They are in top form.

Right, I am off to watch again... hahaha!!!

Anyone been able to get a copy?? Andrew - did you get an advance copy of this???

regards

I'm getting it as soon as it's released here in the US of A.

I think they've announced the date but I forgot it already.

Any DVD that Toto makes is going to rock. I hope they make more.

Just to clear up a discussion that happened awhile ago (and that Luke unfortunately got a bit defensive of)

http://www.classicrockrevisited.com/Int ... imball.htm

Sterling: Is this really live as it happened, or did you go in and do some fixes?

Bobby: I went into the studio . . . on the live Amsterdam record I did no vocal fixes, but [with this] there were a couple of things that I wanted to do a little better, and I mean minute changes. So I went in, and there were a couple of things that felt a little out of tune. I re-sang those, and Luke made a couple of little guitar fixes, and we beefed up the background vocals, but that's it. That's a live night. And it's only one night. Most bands will take six to eight nights and compile them.

So...that answers that. It's not distracting when you watch the video, but if you saw the tour a few times, it feels a little too "perfect" compared what you might have seen at your show. Which brings us to...

Sterling: What do you think about the Internet as a tool for bands? I frequent some of the message boards and I know every band gets reviewed and debated endlessly. What's it like for you as an artist to get commented on in third person? Do you read any of that?

Bobby: Oh, I read it. I have an email address that comes directly to my web page, and I answer all those mails, and I get critiqued all the time. My deal is, everyone on the fucking planet has a bad night. (Laughs). You just can't be on every night. I do make mistakes; I hit flat notes, I hit sharp notes, and you can't fix it live. I don't want one of those tuning machines on stage with me. But just rest assured that I'm doing my absolute best every night. If it comes out bad according to whoever, and they have a beef with that, I always invite them to come on up and show me how to do it better. (Laughs). You take the mic, motherfucker! (Laughs).

I have no problem with being critiqued. I'm not afraid of it. I do what I do very well, and to myself I'm always giving a hundred percent. If somebody's got a problem with that, come on up and show me how to do it. (Laughs). I've had no takers so far.

It's a good answer, and I hope Bobby isn't bothered by that kind of stuff. I've seen shows where he smoked, and a couple where he struggled a bit, but he always did give 100% every single time he opened his mouth, and when you're actually at the gig, that counts a lot more than whether every note is perfect.

I got my DVD today via Amazon, and I must say wow, awesome. I really enjoyed the interviews as well, kinda cool seeing Greg, Luke and Simon showing off their stuff. I'll be watching this DVD quite a bit.

Agreed, I'm a musician so Simon and Greg breaking down their parts was pretty cool. Honestly, I'd kill for a whole DVD of that kind of stuff (especially Luke's parts). I know Luke did an instructional video in the 80's but I still hope he might do another one someday, since his playing has developed quite a bit since 1984 (not to mention all the newer material he'd have to draw from).

The concert itself is great...sounds good, looks good, and the director did a good job making it slick and professional without being distracting like so many concert videos these days (if you've ever seen anything directed by Hamish Hamilton, you know what i'm talking about). Minor post-production qualms aside, it's a killer DVD...I see where Luke's coming from regarding the end of the band...it's weird watching Greg and Sklar on DVD instead of in person when only a couple years ago it was Dave and Mike, but I can't see any Toto fan or musician being disappointed with this, it's still a phenomenal performance on it's own.

I got the dvd in Perth $15 JB HIFI. Have to say I think it doesn't sound as good as Live in Amsterdam. There is a very studio over processed sound to Bobby's voice, its very irritating actually, so I'm disappointed. Saw them at Metro Perth Gig, utterly fantastic and Bobby's voice sounded much better than the DVD even with flaws of the live feel and sound. No,... too much post production here imo.
Best band/musicians on the planet, have to say. I have a DVD boot of FIB France Gig and there is a huge contrast between the two. Not a fair comparison I know but this confirms a lot of corrections were made.

Great DVD, regardless of the amount of overdubs and what not. The only part that really bugs me is the I'll Be Over You transition into Cruel. I LOVE Luke's guitar solos on IBOY so I was really disappointed to not hear the song get the full treatment. Plus, the transition just doesn't work for me. Greg smokes on the keys and his solo was amazing but I still miss David. Leland Sklar is awesome. Luke rocks as usual. God I want his signature guitar... I know I'm going to give in before too long.

So far the only negative thing I've heard about this is someone posting on grailtone.com that their bandmate's Luke doesn't hold its tuning very well. Now, this is something that really annoys me in a guitar. Basically the only thing I don't like about my MIA Strats to be honest. How have you found yours to hold its tuning?

Can the neck single coil dial in Strat sounds on a clean amp? Luke's tone on Gift with a Golden Gun from Live in Amsterdam is so awesome, like a supercharged Strat. That song is what made me start pining for a Luke.
