I heard Arnel on the re-records

Postby annie89509 » Thu Apr 03, 2008 3:42 pm

Was listening to talk radio in my car coming home from work today. Commercial break, suddenly AWYWI comes on. I was shocked for a few seconds, the vocals doesn't sound anything like SP on record. Then, the voiceover makes the announcement that Journey is playing a summer concert at "Harvey's at Lake Tahoe, July ___ ." A few more song clips ... "A smalltown girl, in a lonely world" ... was one, don't remember the other. Also mentioned Heart and Cheap Trick (played their clips, too). But, definitely, Journey seemed like the headliner as the main focus was on them in the commercial spot.

Afterwards, I was talking to another Journey fan in my town. He said he heard the radio commercial, too, on another station. So, it appears they are really going all out, with the marketing and promotional push. Commercial spots all over radio 3 months in advance? We hardly heard anything about it when Journey/DL played Reno in 2006.

Getting back to the little asserts of Arnel singing. For sure, it was taken from the re-records. They sounded different, somehow, from the original. Dare I say --sharp-- and Arnel didn't sound like SP at all. It was strange listening to another voice singing those songs like that on radio. Alluded to by HH in his interview, I guess the band/Shirley must have updated the sound, with today's technology. We'll have to listen to the whole song(s) to see if the band actually made any changes to the original riffs/vocals.

Anybody else heard the concert promo in their city yet?

Haven't heard those yet, sounds interesting. Not sure what you mean by him not sounding like Perry. He's not an exact copy but very close.

Here's a clip of ATL from Chile 2008. He sounds great. Nailed it.

Looking forward to seeing this band again. C'mone! :D

They did the same thing w/ SA, didn't they? Radio spots w/ the Vegas versions instead of "classic" versions?

No they used clips of Augeri singing in concert.

You guys sure the clips were of the new studio rerecords and not clips of Pineda live versions?

They were using live clips of Augeri singing in concert for promo commercial clips at LEAST as far back as '99. Philly area radio had concert commercials that year for a June 13 concert where you'd hear live snippets of Augeri, then a studio snippet or 2 of perry.

I'm sure JoePa that's what they r. They don't have enough time (timeline-wise) to have those out yet. He hasn't been there even 6 month yet barely...

I'll have to catch it again a few more times. As I said, it was a surprise, and I was driving. It sounded like studio-record sound to me, but what do I know? It was not SP's or SA's singing. Must be Arnel. The few snippets sounded good, actually.

I have heard the SA live version promo spots. But they also used SP record versions, too. I guess they will stick with Arnel's singing now.

I don't doubt it was AP. If they used SP or SA,they'd have to pay'em.

Watch that clip at 3:45. Neal's so happy AP's there, he looks like he wants to kiss him.

Interesting they referred to the HH interview...

I was afraid it wasn't a coincidence. If anybody questions how they can replace Perry, just refer them to the interview that blames it all on Perry...

ps when Journey came to the San Diego area with SA, the promos were DEFINITLY SP. I remember bc it was a bit of a stink, ie false advertising, among a small number of radio call ins. Which may be why they're using Arnel this time...

It could really be AP, but it's either the Chile or the Vegas live version. Just speculating.

I remember the stink about advertising. Journey's response was that they sent out the Augeri promos but could not control the radio stations from doing their own thing. Most of it seemed to do with playing a classic song and then talking about the concert. But at least Journey put on the front that if you told them about it they would contact the station and "demand" that they use the officially provided promos.

Seems like the band is doing all the things they should have done with Augeri but didn't. Leads me to wonder why they didn't.

BTW, I don' think radio alluded to the HH interview, I think annie was alluding to the HH interview.

I can certainly confirm that when Journey was playing locally with Augeri, it was NEVER Augeri version tracks playing on the radio to promote the upcoming concert. It was Perry 100%. It struck me as a bit deceptive to be promoting the then current version of Journey using Perry's voice!

I think they've decided that finally, here's a guy (Arnel) who can do justice to the songs. They (or management) won't be afraid to showcase him. So, we can probably expect more public exposure. With SA and, of course JSS, it was concerts and very little else. The few TV shows they got on with SA, it was pretty embarrassing, wasn't it?

The blurb I heard, and it may have been from Caveman's diary, was that they'd been busy trying to make the songs sound as close to the originals as possible, so I've been expecting updated production, but not many (if any at all) changes to the riffs or instrument tones. I guess we'll see.

i dont think that this habit of using rerecordings was as prevelant as it is today.
i do remember when they started touring with SA they did post signs at live shows, that steve perry and steve smith were not in the band and not preforming at the shows.
just heard the ad for the show, if thats not perry, than arnel can def.. deliver the goods in the studio. used AWYWI, be good to yourself, and wheel in the sky. sound reallly good.

I agree. Plus since they picked up Arnel they have received more media coverage in the last month than in the last 20 years. The "rags to riches" angle is nice, but the fact that the guy can sing is the only reason why the story is worthy of the coverage. Bottom line: The media is picking up on the story because Arnel delivers the goods and then some. Although they were fine singers in their own right, none of the other post SP singers generated even half the excitement this guy has. Even the commies at NPR did a nice job of highlighting the revitalized band's story. NPR ususally focuses on obsure, burned out folk-singer types on Fresh Air or some other whacked out bohemian segment.

In the Cleveland area, I have heard only one commercial for it and they played Separate Ways with SP singing. Also, for anyone questioning who the headliner is, well I have heard and read several time the advertisement for Journey "with special guests Heart and Cheap Trick".
