Now that was fan-fucking-tastic. Journey absolutely has found the proper voice to succeed Perry (finally). Now the question is, what are they going to create with him?

It's one thing to tour Perry era hits and perform them at the same or similar level to what they did with Perry, but it's quite another to create new music worthy of their legacy. That is the real question. Perry wasn't just a supremely skilled vocalist, he was focal point for the artistic style and melody creation in the band. The one who crafted their original songs into the catalog that has stood the test of time. Will their new music have that "it" factor? They finally have the skilled voice on the mic, now they have to be creative with what they've got.

Well, in the BIO the band is talking up their bright future and they "sound" excited about the possibilities (not that we've been there before). Let's hope they really stick to it and PUSH instead of falling back on the EASY. Sadly, as good as Neal and Jon can be, they really do benefit from a 3rd writer. Much of Arrival had outside help and it sounded pretty good. Most of their classic hits had a 3rd songwriter as well. I know it has not escaped anyone's notice here. They are a solid team but another perspective is welcomed so I hope they open that up to Arnel (or Deen for that matter) in the future.

I'm really excited to hear how Journey utilizes their 2 vocal weapons in Arnel and Deen in their "Revelation" album. Cain't wait.

All I can say is that, IMO, you guys are very easily impressed. He's good. I'm not knocking his ability at all. But, I've heard cover band singers in my small town just as good and some even better. He is far from the second coming of SP that so many are touting him to be.

In the words of Simon "Antichrist" Cowell: "It was very karaoke..."

Sorry. :?

I agree with you, mate. Not flaming Arnel but just echoing what you said that he is far from the second coming of SP. But they should keep whoever the guitarist is in this clip of Send Her My Love. He's pretty good.

The best youtube clip I've heard of Arnel so far is that Led Zep song 'rock n roll.' I thought he was really impressive on that.
I like Arnel's 'look' though.

He has his own style but still there's a little resemblance with SP, unlike Hugo who's a total clone.

I like Arnel's look or style as you put it.
I don't agree there is any SP resemblance though - well, apart from he's singing songs SP sang before him that is.

I love that army type jacket he has with the sergeant's stripes. It's cool.

Well, from the cheap seats the long black hair might throw a few people! ;)
And maybe the army coat is the modern version of the tails...the coat is the character?

Not better but still good! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tO-XEl5xJ2o They do Led Zep really well I think.

Good job Planty agreed to do the O2 Arena concert otherwise Neal might have had to fight Jimmy Page for Arnel's services.

Well, lets not get carried away now. I believe Arnel is the best voice SINCE Perry, but he's not Perry. This vocal on SHML has a very sophisticated vibrato and great emotional delivery, but he is still mimicking what Perry originated. Mimicking it VERY well mind you, but still, he's standing on the shoulders of who came before him.

If Arnel can originate new material with the band at this same level, this incarnation of Journey will have my vote. So far, I've not heard that across three new songs. I've heard, Survivor & Bad English but not Journey. The only tune that sounds like Journey does so because it's a knock off of a Perry era hit. Not jumping up and down yet peeps but that doesn't mean the vocal on this performance of SHML isn't great. It is.

Just saw this. Not a bad vocal, but he doesn't emote like Perry. Could be since he doesn't have a connection to it. He didn't write the song, so he's just singing words. Doesn't mean some people don't have the ability to take other people's material and emote it as well. It just means that Arnel is no Perry, by any means.

Yeah I saw it also. AP can sing it a hundred times better then I could so I can't say anything negative. However, AP is in a bad situation only because when he performs these Journey classics, most of us who know and love these songs compare his singing and performance to SP's twenty some odd years ago. SP has an incredible edge over AP in the since that first off, we compare AP who's now 40 years old to a younger SP's vocals and performance. Second, SP is singing in his his first language, AP is singing in his second language. Lastly, no matter how we cut it, we are still bias in ways because SP was the one who did these songs first and we became familiar and associate these songs with SP's voice and performance.

What I'd like to see is SP come back and do these songs again now. Then we could really compare SP to AP, though that may be a little bit unfair then to SP because of the age difference between SP and AP. Anyways, nothing lasts forever and I think it's over for SP. We may not like to admit that, but I remember my grandparents sqawking in the 80's about how singers in the 20's and 30's were the best ever and all the 80's singers were shit compared to what they grew up listening to. It's safe to say that we are now entering into the same argument with the singers we listen to from the 80's. My example is Air Supply. I listen to their albums of the late 70's and early 80's and the lead vocalists voice is remarkable....yet look on youtube and check out their most current performance. I feel like shit because I just can't take it, he's unable to really hit any high notes anymore and holding prolonged notes....completely out of the question. I feel like shit because I hate to see that it's over for him.
I've never eaten a piece of sushi I didn't thoroughly enjoy.
