OT: Any Backyard Hunters? BB & Pellet Guns

I dug out my little Daisy 880 BB Gun the other day and was dicking around with it, shooting in the front yard. Through the years, it's gotten to the point that it loses pressure if you don't shoot within 5-7 seconds of pumping it full. It's a trusty little thing for the price and 750fps is pretty good, but the air leaking thing pisses me off. On top of that, it's fairly quiet.

A while back, I went to a site called www.varminthunter.net and looked at that gun which is made by GAMO USA. Has all the bells and whistles, but I didn't want to bother ordering one online without getting to at least hold it and test it first. Earlier this week, on a whim, I went into the local sporting goods place to see what they had in stock. I saw my trusty Daisy 880, and a Crossman that was WAY too fucking heavy for any BB Gun, and then spotted what I "thought" was a .22 and realized it was the Varmint Hunter gun I picked it up and it was light enough and fit me nicely.... so it followed me home

To not alarm the neighbors, I went upstairs in my house and took out the screen from my bedroom window and was going to test it from there. First off, I realized it was a "Break Barrel" type gun, which means you load 1 pellet at a time. On the plus side, that one cock of the barrel upon loading also meant 1000-1200fps

I lined the scope up with a "target" across the street and BANG!

That fucking thing was just as loud as my old .22 was, possibly louder. Needless to say, That was the ONLY shot I fired. On top of that, it was about a foot off from where I had aimed. So...... back to the store with it. They kinda looked at me funny when I brought it back, but I gave them the "I used wedding money" excuse

Now... Looking online for a good little pest control weapon, I found this site: http://www.pyramydair.com


I also see that they carry the GAMO guns and GAMO makes one called the Whisper Deluxe that I'm considering getting OR... Possibly the Whisper with the Air Centauri chamber option. Aparently, it's about 52% quieter than their other models without giving up the FPS.

I also like the Crosman Tac 77 Elite


I also like Benjamin air rifles because they are VERY consistant and won't cost an arm and leg, unlike the Air Arms models. But... they also seem to be pretty loud. I need something quiet since I live in a residential neighborhood

I'm trying to stay under $300

I shoot at the crows and coyotes with my paint-ball gun Don't know if I've ever actually hit one but it scares 'em away (guess if I ever see a purple crow flying around I'll know I hit my mark!)

I'm aiming more at pests for the most part. The tree in the front yard is right outside my bedroom window and the squirrels get very territorial and make alot of growly barking noises when I'm sleeping during the days when on nightshifts. The crows are no picnic either.

Oh God..squirrels can make some of the most ridiculous noises at each other when they are fighting or being territorial..they can make noises I never even knew existed.

My parents have cool squirrels at their place. They'll come up to 3 feet from you of you're throwing nuts out for them to eat. They're pretty people friendly for the most part. My squirrels are noisy pests. Find another tree....

Sounds like bunny wabbits. It's approaching rabbit season again. We have a ton of rabbits around here.

I am never surprised anymore what I see wondering around here or building something in the woods by the stream or hauling stuff back and fourth to make a house.

I see racoons, possums, beaver, ducks, rabbits, squirrels, every type of bird, etc..

The squirrels will cling onto the screen doors and hang there taunting our cats. The squirrels can get very loud with the noises they make!

I have a a kick ass Gamo Maxima Air Rifle with high powered scope, an incredible looking and powerful gun.
I also have a Gamo Shadow gun for normal plunking. It also shoots 1000fps and is deadly accurate as well.

It's well known, any Gamo gun takes at least 300-500 shots before it's "worked in" and shooting effectively. No gamo gun will shoot fine right out of the box. I learned this after going through a couple of guns, taking them back, complaining, etc. I learned from the internet about the work in period.

I read a shitload of reviews on them as well, and it looks like they do need a few (reads:300+) popped through them to get them worked in. I think some of the not-so-nice reviews are from people who expect perfection right out of the box. I knew the one I had woulkd take a bunch of shots to get it right, but I just didn't like the loud bang or the spring recoil. The Whisper Air Ventauri model aparently takes care of some of those problems

My parents squirrels started off by torturing the cat. Ollie would be stuck inside the front door and they'd charge the window when he wasn't looking and send him flying. It was pretty comical. After a few weeks, the squirrel and the cat will sit just inches from each other on opposite sides of the window and not even flinch.



When I was a kid, we had barnswallows that would build nests in the garage as well as under the roofline of the house. We'd come outside and get divebombed by the little shitheads. On top of that, they crapped all over the house. We couldn't shoot at them with BB guns because mom would have us strung up for that, so we got slingshots and crabapples. They went away after a short while... but then we had to go wash crabapple splatter off the side of the house

ive still got my Benjamin .177 bb/pelet gun from my childhood... you have to pump it about 10 times and its just shy of a .22...

i used to walk down in the dry creek bed hunting squirles.. you had to bea good shot to hit them in the trees.. they are a son of a gun to clean though...

The Benjamins are good air rifles. They are usually around 1000fps. 1100 fps is the sound barrier and anything over that will file alot louder I guess. The one I shot ONE time and took back was 1200 fps with THEIR ammo. If I switched to heavier lead ammo, then it goes back down to 1000 fps which is still plenty of power. It looks like most of the GAMO guns are 1200 with their ammo and 1000 with lead ammo. I want to stay in the 900-1000 range and with a fairly quiet gun. Now... to convince the "War Department" and I "need" a new toy...

I am, but haven't had to go hunting in my back yard since we moved. Last thing I stalked was a raccoon that had invaded my attic, and I nabbed it with a light bow and arrow right when he exited the window on my roof. NO WAY could I risk doing that in my current neighborhood. But I've been meaning to get a good pellet rifle. I don't know any reason why they should cost anywhere close to $300.00, though. I may wait to see what you get first.

There's BB and pellet guns that are well above $2000 as well. Many of the local Walmarts will carry the Daisy 880 like I have. They go for about $70 and will do the job as they are about 750fps when fully pumped. I've been looking into a new pellet gun off and on for a long time and have always put it on the back burner. Now that spring is here and the fucking pests are going full boar outside my bedroom window, it's time for them to move. Besides, I also like to target shoot as well, so may as well get a better quality one and be done with it instead of having to replace low quality ones every 5 years.

After reading the reviews, I'm leaning ehavily towards the GAMO Whisper Air Venturi model It's $350, but it'll also may be the last one I have to buy Waiting for a sale......

We would never in a million years get away with shooting a BB or pellet gun in our town! I guarantee the squad cars would be pulling up within 3 minutes of the shot. We think we have finally gotten rid of the woodchuck (or whatever it is) that was living under our front step. We're hoping it decided to move to the neighbor that we can't stand. For some reason, every wild animal in the area gravitates to our yard. They're kind of stupid, because we have 2 dogs. The squirrels love taunting our lab retriever. That dog has caught 3 possums in the backyard and has been sprayed by a skunk 2x. He's caught a few rabbits, too. We have some really dumb rabbits every year who decide to dig a hole to have babies in the middle of our backyard. Last year, Coco actually didn't hurt the babies, but he carefully brought one to me (alive) in his mouth. We now have a lab mix puppy who probably won't be quite as gentle. A few years ago, I unknowingly ran over a rabbit hole with the lawn mower in the front yard. All of the babies got away except for 1, who had part of his ear taken off. We tried to nurse it to health, but it died after a couple of days. We also had a red-tailed hawk in the neighborhood last year. It freaked me out one morning when I was out running and I saw the hawk swoop down and scoop up a mouse and fly off with it.

I want too..I think they are pretty cool actually..but I had a REAL bad experience with a ton of them as a kid and I have never been able to overcome it. I know there are a ton of them around here..but with the cats around..they don't come out too often..

I watch Arachnophobia just to torture myself.. Pretty cool that not one spider was lost or harmed while making the movie.
