Is Current Styx Just a Nostalgia Band ?

To answer the original question: Yes.

They have been primarily a nostalgia band since recording "Lady 95," the occasional tentative stab at another approach notwithstanding.

No, No, No, just think of all the great music we'd be missing if they had done that. I think that Rush is one example of a band that continues to make new music successfully, and still touring, as a headliner with no need for an opening act. The Rush fan is a peculiar breed though.. not that that's a bad thing as I'm one of them...

as for Nostalgia Act, the topic at hand, sadly I think they may be teetering on the edge of this. I'm not sure anymore if the much hoped for/never gonna happen reunion with DDY would return them to headliners. I'd buy the ticket for certain, but I think those days are over. Sad, sad, sad.

Can't really compare Styx to Rush. Rush's last studio album in 2007 went up to #3, and haven't had a studio album NOT break the top 10 since 1989. Plus, Rush still gets 8-12,000 folks at their shows with NO opening band, and they play two sets.

Cyclorama, on the other hand, made it to #127 in the US. Brave New World made it to #175. In fact, the only Styx album (non-compilation) since 1990 to be certified Gold is...Return To Paradise, which had their "former keyboardist" playing on it.

Just remember Rush's last few albums haven't gone gold either.. they may have charted better, but that doesn't necessarily mean they'll be gold or platinum.

Vapor Trails, Snakes and Arrows (although it debut at #3 it quickly left the top 100) and Feedback have all sold less then 500 000 copies in the US.

Rush In Rio DVD has gone 4X platinum, but as well all know DVD award sales are considerably less then CD award sales.

I'm pretty sure Gold is 250,000 ... not 500,000.

gold for albums in the us is 500,000
platinum is 1,000,000
i believe gold for dvds is 250,000 in sales per disc in the set so a 2 disc dvd would only have to see 125,000 copies to be certified gold.

Actually sniper.. its less then that:

Music Video Longform
Quantity:
50,000 units (Gold)
Quantity:
100,000 units (Platinum)
Quantity:
200,000 units (Multi Platinum)

Requirements:
*Defined as a title that has not been theatrically released prior to distribution.
Requirements:
*Defined as a title that has not been theatrically released prior to distribution.
Requirements:
*Defined as a title that has not been theatrically released prior to distribution.

*Recertified at 100,000 unit sales level.

Thats from the RIAA for Music Video Longform.

So sells 100 000 DVD's, and you've got yourself a Platinum Award in the US.

In Canada the #'s are 10% of what's above.

Gold is 5000 Copies

Platinum is 10 000 Copies (I believe the RTP DVD is just about to surpass Cdn Platinum)

I guess that's where the sales are now.. don't release a CD.. release a DVD!

Well last I heard it was nearing Platinum.. with both Styx and Dennis doing shows in Quebec this past year, I'm sure its on its way to double platinum now..

Also, I was surprised at just how many copies CYO has sold in Canada.. last I heard it was approaching gold here as well (5000 DVDs).

With other Canadian shows upcoming, it could very well be gold by the end of the year here..

Why look at the glass half empty when you can look at it as completely full? There's enough insult to go around, my friend! Pull up a chair. :D

Awww, kind words Zan, you don't find that very often when you're a music hound and you constantly have to justify your love of Styx AND Rush.. you may find it hard to believe but you'll get a lot of flak for those choices..

'course it might be easy to be kind when you get to look at that cute baby of yours every day..

As for nostalgia, I don't think it's sad, I just wish that it wasn't looked at as a bad thing.. I love nostalgia, it makes me think I'm young again.

Think about it ... I was in a Rush tribute band. Would a non-fan do it?

But Rush fans are the worst to please I've found in terms of concerts. Just look at the bitching about the new leg of the S&A tour as a good example. You realize that it's not worth the effort at some point lol

I can't think for the life of me WHY you kids want to pay to hear the hits w/o the guy singing them that made them hits and wrote some of them besides.

Using that logic, If Paul and Ringo toured together, who would pay money to hear them sing Beatle Songs? If you want to hear Babe and The Best of Times, catch one of the few Dennis shows he performs. Styx has been in my area 7 or 8 times since the 2nd breakup. Dennis once. I'd see them both.

Your logic is a bit faulty regarding the Beatles. Ringo and Paul were always in the band, so if Styx were to do the same thing they would just tour with Tommy, JY, bass guy, and drums guy...with Tommy and JY singing DDY's original parts.

What Styx did with Larry is like John or Paul leaving the Beatles...and being replaced by someone like Joe Cocker and still touring as the Beatles. And they'd do interviews referring to Paul as "our former bassist."
