I will admit that I'm not typically into the Carpenter's type of music, but I've always felt she had one of the greatest voices ever.

The very best alto voice in Pop music history......could make songs that on their own were totally gooey/sugary very listenable. (not ALL of them though)

I especially enjoyed her performance of the song Superstar, which with anyone else singing it would be completely intolerable.

Such a pity the way we lost her though....

And she was actually a contralto, but I agree she had a great voice.

I honestly thought the Carpenters were always overrated. Not bad, just overrated. I'm not taking anything away from Karen's voice as she is talented, I just don't get why they were as big as they were and still are to some. To each his or her own.

They were big because at the time they hit the scene, the powers that be (censors) wanted to get as far away from the drug-induced/free love atmosphere the music of the sixties had created. The Carpenters were the answer to that. If you look back, all pop music during that time was sappy and sugary. I think she had a good voice. I have to say that because my voice is similar to hers ;-), but as far as her having some iconic power, I don't get it either.

Sing some more Zan, "Don't you remember you told me you love baby, you said you be coming back again baby...baby, baby, baby, baby oh baby, I looooove you....I really do". A lot of people forget she started off on the skins in this band. I think a couple of old videos exist showing her playing them and singing. Her brother, I always thought was underated as an arranger/producer. She was great.

I hate to admit this, but my very first concert ever was the Carpenters, I was 14, in Omaha. It was a really big deal, a sell out. I think I still have that program...........quite honestly I don't remember much about it specifically, I think I just went because my friend's parents got her tickets. I thought Richard was cute at some point for one fleeting moment, that passed very quickly........she had the long maxi dress with the patchwork quilting in the front, gag me, we all actually wore that stuff - agh! I'm sure that experience completely turned me off of anything "pop" - haha. And I agree, the timing of their music and record execs was what made them so popular.
