OT - Styx Board Presidential Straw pole - May 2008

I thought it would be interesting to get an indication regarding the political leanings on this board....all who click on this topic are welcome to vote, but since the results dont mean squat, please dont stuff the ballot box.

speaking of boxes, if you'd like to step up on the ol' soapbox and opine on your reasons thats OK, could get some very interesting discussion going too. I'll vote later so as not to give away my own current preference. If people play along, I'll post the same topic in August and again in October to see what shifts have taken place.

Mine was a reference to a South Park episode that summed up the choice between Al Gore and George Bush in a very simple way. Douche and Turd Sandwich were the way Trey and Matt characterised the candidates. I think it applies to this election as well.

Zan-I think Shaka is referring to the South Park episode where they were trying to pick a new mascot for the school and the choices were "Douche" and "Turd Sandwich".

Cartman for the record supported Turd Sandwich

I've only seen a handful of SP episodes, so I'll admit my ignorance on that one. I agree our candidates are nothing to write home about though. What else is new.

Zan,

I agree that this years crop of candidates leaves much to be desired, and that this sentiment is repeated pretty much every 4 years. I had high hopes for Obama, but they were crushed when he didnt take a stonger stand right away aginst the teachings of his pastor.

It is easy and convenient to want to vote for "none of the above"

However, what I would find very enlightening would be to find out ( if people could pick whoever they want ) Just who people would want to be their president.

Personally, if I could ordain a president, it would be senator Russ Feingold of my home state of Wisconsin. One reason is his willingness to stand up for what is right, even if it is unpopular. When everyone was smarting over September 11th, he was the only vote aainst the Patriot act, because he was the only Senator who took the time and effort required TO READ THE ENTIRE BILL......and discovered it took away many civil liberties that americans take for granted. There are many other reasons I feel he'd do a great job, which I wont go into detail about here.

So I throw the question out there you pick, anyone you feel fit for the job.....who would it be :?:

I would choose Romney. To economy is my big issue and he has the tools to do something about it.

That's who I voted for in the primaries! I'd like to see him as McCain's running mate.

Bah - I'm as conservative as the next guy but screw John McCain. If we're going to elect someone who will have liberal policies, we might as well just elect a democrat and let them take the fallout for the way it will screw things up even more than they are.

I like John McCain.

I am a liberal Republican.( pro choice, for gun control why do citizens need semi automatic weapons?? I love to hunt). I believe that we MUST close our borders, and boot the illegals. I hate the fact that we went into Iraq, but now that we are there we must finish the job. I LOVE the Patriot Act. Security is a HUGE issue. I am against government run health care. The cost of gas irates me. I want off shore drilling & the Metro or Civic back NOW!!! Our economy is in turmoil we MUST fix it. I believe that OBama is a black militant, who is a TOTAL embarassment, and his wife is even worse. I hate the way that both partys opperate.

I too wish that McCain would choose Romney( very good economist) as his running mate. If not Romney then.. Denny Crane!

I am for whichever candidate will cause the most discord and consternation, particularly amongst the people around me.

So since I live in Utah, Christmas comes early for me this year no matter who wins...it's just a question of how big my present is going to be.

This is really the worst pick of the lot in my opinion, I've always found someone I could really back in an election, but this time around it boils down to who I don't want.

Obama- Talks a great game, charismatic to a degree, but his failings are two-fold. He wants to be a martyr. It seems like he's got a death wish. Willing to travel to Cuba and meet with Raul Castro with little to no restrictions, Iran, the same thing. In addition, he spouts propaganda for change, yet has not laid out any real plans for anything. What plans he has shown seem to be stolen from other plans/candidates.

Clinton- Hillary should have locked this up, but not only has she pissed of Republicans she attacks her fellow Democrats instead of trying to work things out or even backstabbing, she does it right in front of them. I can't blame Edwards and Lieberman for supporting others. Hillary seems to pick the wrong battles to fight. She flip-flops on the issues based on media interpretations instead of backing her own convictions.

McCain... Ultimately who I will be voting for, but to me he is the least of 3 evils. Contrary to belief, I am under the impression he does want out of Iraq (If only to bring down Iran), but promotes caution leaving. It would not serve anyone to pull out immediately. We would be forced with invading again to stabilize the region if we pulled out so fast. McCain also flip flops, he's turned his back on Bush for whatever his reasons (most likely strategy for a White House bid), he has a very rough exterior and stubborn.

Ultimately, even if the ticket is Obama/Clinton or Clinton Obama, I believe that McCain will win and the Senate and House will remain Democrat. This seems to be the system most American's prefer. It leaves our checks and balances in order.

As far as running-mates, the top 3 choices are Joe Lieberman (GOP will never allow this), Mitt Romney (locking up the North East and Western States), or Mike Huckabee (locking up the Mid-West and South). It's a tough call between Romney and Huckabee. But can McCain get past his differences with Romney to run with him on the same ticket? I think Huckabee is the safe bet.

There are of course several other Candidates on both sides, but I can't see a ticket more powerful for the Democrats other than a combination of Clinton/Obama, but I don't think it's enough to win regardless. McCain has other choices, but barring some huge scandal, I think it's all, but over.

the election is 5 1/2 months away, and anything can still happen...........( God forbid ) 1 of the candidates could develop a serius health issue, a scandal, or something else no one could see coming......

If this were a baseball game it would only be the bottom of the 4th inning !

This is true, but I covered that already I thought. Coulda swore I said something about "barring a scandal." Maybe my head was working faster than my fingers. It happens, except in.... Nevermind.

Then again, the POLL did say, if the election was today... which is the main basis. The only variable in that is the unknown Veeps.

Just meant that Huckabee is less likely to clash openly with McCain than Romney would. Not that it would be better for the Country. Ultimately, it don't matter what we think, it's who McCain thinks will help him win, he'll worry about Politics between himself and his Veep later. Right now he just wants to win.

I voted for Huckabee here in the TN primary. Beyond all of the religious stuff, I genuinely liked his message. It'd take Huckabee being on McCain's ticket to get me to even consider voting for McCain for president. Until that time, Bob Barr gets my vote.

Like Rowdy I too believe that if McCain is elected he will somehow get us out of Iraq. That will be a TOP priority of his. Maybe not quite as quickly as an elected Dem would, but I believe that he will do EVERYTHING possible to stabilize the region(as much as possible) before we pull out. The Dems will just pull out and hope to God World War lll doesnt start.

As with Zan, Huckabee scares the shi t out of me. Any holy roller in the White House would.

My hopes are that McCain picks Romney or Liberman as his running mate.

I'm not a big Huckabee fan, but I did think his ideas for reforming the tax code were pretty interesting....( Im not sure it would work, but pay as you consume appeals to me )

well not being republican or democrat ( that would make me independent). I can't see having anothe Republican in office. McCain will probably get us out of Iraq and straight into Iran. I am surprised at how many Styx fans chiming in are pro republican though.
