Touring as three acts

Postby styxfanNH » Mon Jun 02, 2008 12:33 am

Could Tommy, JY and Dennis ever just tour as three separate acts and be successful, pushing the music of Styx with their own personal projects?

It was an interesting talk I had with one of my friends and we really had a hard time deciding.

Without a doubt, all parties involved have returned to the touring life at what some would say is varying levels of success.

The questions that were tossed out was

1. Could Styx tour with DDY, JY, and Tommy? doing thirty to forty days a year over the summer?
2. Could Dennis tour as Dennis DeYoung without the Styx moniker and still be successful doing whatever type of show he wanted much as he does now.
3. Could JY and Tommy tour under a Shaw - Young moniker without the usage of the name Styx but able to play Styx songs if they choose.

The Styx moniker would allow them to run the gamut of the Styx catalog, then separate and do their own shows as they so chose.
They would only have to work together for about 60 -70 days a year and have ample time to play with others if they chose.
This would allow each to incorporate solo work into their show building a different type of fan base, but build off of the Styx name.

Or would this confuse the public any more than it may be confused already?

I don't think so, even assuming they could get along. I don't think JY has the clout to fit into a format like this... nobody would want to sit through his solo stuff. Most people probably wouldn't even want to sit through Tommy's solo stuff. It's a cool idea tho.

I concur. I don't see anything like this ever, ever happening. I think some of the old disagreement monsters would rear their ugly heads before something like this could ever get under way.

The other obvious point is that both Dennis and The Current Styx are having a decent amount of success to continue performing just as they are doing right now.

As has been pointed out so many times before, too, these guys are not getting younger. There are only a few years left for any of them to continue performing as they do now.

Can they get together as geezers and do the Citrus Circuit? Maybe. But they would still have to bury a bunch of hatchets under the walkers and wheelchairs.

I agree about each camp's success at the moment, but it would really be nice if Dennis would expand the area he tours in, instead of doing some of the same cities each year. For instance, Dennis has barely ever ventured South (Florida is the only place I know he's gone to). At least, he has never come to Atlanta for one of his solo shows. I'm not knocking any other city down here, but you would think that he would at least come to Atlanta. The current Styx plays here at least 1 to 2 times a year to a decent size crowd, so the band's music is certainly popular enough to warrant a Dennis show.

Sorry for getting off topic, just had to rant for a second! 8)

I'd love to check out one of his shows, but he hasn't played anywhere near my home state since the Styx tour in 97.

This statement gives me cause for pause...

I wish they would get over themselves and just do a few shows together for us old-timing fans. I feel I don't have too much time left to be going to many more concerts, either. Does the money part of it really matter so much to them? :?: :( What about my EARS!!!!????

They already did. It was called the RTP tour.

The only thing I'll add is that it isn't as easy as saying I wish he/they would play here (insert place/act to suit your desire). There has to be demand for it...and that is an uphill battle for the "he" of the he/they I referenced.

I don't think this would ever get off the ground, nor would I wish it to.

Peace

Even without Dennis at first Styx was able to be a headline act. Now I think back to that Styx/Bad Co/Billy Squire tour back in 2001, and I would bet if they billed those three together again today Styx would have to open for Bad Company. Styx needs to take 3 years off.

I agree, it would be nice if Styx would take a little time off. Maybe rework a few things for the show, etc., etc. Heck, even a year would do it. Of course, I think that the band members might be afraid of being forgotten and/or overlooked if they aren’t constantly touring all the time. I don't think that would be true, but who knows what motivates their decisions (besides money, that is).
