Thoughts on a new Perry CD

Postby Art Vandelay » Wed Jun 04, 2008 3:18 am

Any thoughts on what style of music you would like to hear on a new Perry CD, if he does decide to go forth with one? Would you like to hear more ballads? Uptempo rock? Or would you like to hear him experiment with a different style?

Maybe a downtempo jazz feel?

One of my favorite vocals of his is on Sandcastles on the Dream After Dream soundtrack. The way that he plays off of Smith's jazz fills is amazing. I always though of this song as sort of a duet with him and Smith.

PS - no I am not Perry, trying to ruin the Revelation review threads

Would be nice to hear his interpretation of some Motown classics too.

I wouldn't be surprised if the new material he is supposedly working on never sees the light of day.

Agree. You can only cry..or sing..'wolf' so many times that you flat out lose credibility. If he did happen to put something out, I want it to be new stuff. If I wanted to hear classic covers, I'll buy a Rod Stewart or Michael McDonald CD.

My feeling is he's experimenting across the board, writing and recording things in different genres and styles. Some Motown, some Jazz, some acoustic, etc. We know he worked with Nuno Bettencourt in the last year. If I had to hazzard a guess, I'd say whatever he did with him is ballad based, not rocker.

At his age, I doubt Perry is interested in making anything along the lines of Revelation. He leaned that way in his 20's and 30's, but I think he's mellowed and grown beyond that.

I agree with Art about his approach on Sandcastles. I'd love an album full of that kind of material. Not unlike "can't let you go" (his Jeff Golub collaboration). That's what makes Perry special. He can float into any style and fit in. He's just that good.

That being said, I also agree with others who think we're not going to see whatever he's working on. I think he's doing it for himself, but unless he's really happy with what he lays down, it will never see distribution. The fact that he has to be told "it sounds like him" without knowing it for himself tells me his burnout was extremely severe. I think he looks back on his body of work and doesn't recognize the person who did all that stuff. Probably doesn't even know how he accomplished it on some level, because it's not him anymore. That's a common effect of severe burnout.

Nice response! Yeah, to this day, I'm blown away with what he and Smith did together on Sandcastles. I include Smith on this because he has never played like that on any other Journey track. I commended him on that the last time I saw Vital Information.

I wonder if Perry was going for a different sound, or expecting to sound different, being that he was surprised that it still sounded like "him."

Whether he puts out new stuff or not remains to be seen. I'm just glad to hear that the creative spark hasn't fizzled out on such a talent. And yes, even if one is being creative for personal reasons or achievements, the gratification is instant...and worth it.

Perry's been saying "new album", "in the studio", "maybe" for YEARS.

The key part of his last interview was "I don't know what I'm going to do with the stuff I'm recording" (paraphrased)

He might never release it, just like he hasn't released anything since, what 94? (Greatest Hits and reissues don't count). If he was TRULY "working on an album", you can bet that a record company would be behind it and there would be a PLAN for it's release. The fact that Steve said he didn't know what he was doing with it means he's doing demos. They could just be for him, they could actually be to shop a new album to a record company. But at this point, it sounds like he doesn't have any record company backing, so right now, this means NOTHING.

If you hear that 'such and such a record company' is now working with Steve Perry- THEN all this 'he's coming back like Jesus' talk means something. Right now, it's a guy messing around in the studio.

Also, after the sales of FTLOSM, you gotta wonder how many record companies would be interested in another Steve Perry solo outing. Too bad. That album had a few good tunes on it.

I'd love to be wrong, but Perry's cried wolf way too many times.

Keep waiting.... and be sure to watch out for him to show up whenever Journey has any news.

I think his best songs are when he and Schon collaborated – and when they wrote as if Perry's voice was just another instrument.

Lyrics were sometimes incidental, lol...

If he does release something, I hope it’s along these lines.

He is a master of melody, and for writing for HIS voice, but he needs someone to give his music teeth.

Don’t try for hits, or for the Journey formula… try for great music.
(NO SAPPY STUFF!!!) (Stay Awhile is a GREAT ballad, without being sappy.)

Perry won't release another album.

He is just jealous because Journey have moved on without him, and now with Arnel, they have a shot at something again. Without HIM!!! Must be crushing his ego.

Watching the DVD, I see a band that is having FUN on stage! They are ENJOYING THEMSELVES!!! Without Perry!!

If he did record a new disc, I think he should ask Smitty to be on it...how cool would that be????

Yeah, that's it.
2.5 albums, a DVD, multiple tours and 10 years later, and NOW he's jealous.

Yeah, Perry is probably sitting on his couch right now, stroking his cat and sadly mouthing the words to the new DVD.

Sorry, bud...Smith has said [in the past few years] that Perry was his favorite vocalist to record with and would do so again with him.
