The End of Toto

I guess it truely is the end of Toto reading from http://www.stevelukather.net Sad day for me, but I will always have all the albums to listen to and I will forever support every member that was Toto. I really respect Steve to lay it all out there for us, I can understand that he wants to go into a new direction. I hope his tour comes to the Chicago area.

I am glad I was fortunate to see them in concert 2 years ago. It is I night I will never forget. I hope Luke tours around Raleigh NC I will be there.

Well that's a real raw deal for me... Toto never even came close to me since I got into them 5 or 6 years ago. Luke's note confused me... I mean, didn't he say he was done with David Paich a few months ago for licensing Rosanna to a TV commercial? Anyway, I *think* Steve occasionally comes here, so maybe he'll read that as an American fan who has bought everything Toto has put out, even if it means paying hefty import fees, I certainly have not turned my back on you guys Luke! The powers that be in this laughable entity we call the American record industry may have betrayed you and you've got every legitimate reason in the world to be bitter about that, but all the fans I know of yours (myself included) would give anything to see Toto live and to continue to hear new material. Just putting this out there in case you ever decide to get Toto back together in some capacity... at any rate, thanks for all the great music and guitar inspiration Luke. At least come to Cleveland on your solo tour if you can?

AGREED on all counts.... every SINGLE one! Especially you coming to Ohio on the solo tour, Luke. Well it'd be cooler if you went closer to Cincy than Cleveland.

So, they are coming back to the US, but without Luke, correct? When I talked to him before their show here last year, he really didn't have good things to say about the United States attitudes towards the band. It was like he didn't feel they should have gotten the alienation that every other band from the 80's got when the music world went in a different direction. There are a lot of other bands that might be bigger elsewhere in the world then the US but they don't stop touring here or diss the American people for THEIR not being popular anymore.

IMO....He is an OUTSTANDING musician, but he's got a bit of an attitude problem

I'm still not 100% convinced that Toto is over. If Mike gets better and Paich is able to tour, I think you will see Luke change his mind quickly.

I hope you're right, but I think Luke made his decision because he knows neither of those things are going to happen. Having been lucky enough to see three Toto gigs in their last month of touring I'm just glad that they went out on a high, Luke was certainly playing like his life depended on it.

Now, when is Serafino going to get Paich to write and produce an album for Frontiers, hmmm?

That sucks. IV was one of my first LPs back when it was released, and one of my most outplayed records that I owned. I kinda understand where Steve's comin' from, though. At least they went out on a high note with FIB.

This is huge.

This band has meant so much for me over the years. Ask anyone that knows me. This is heartbreaking news.

I can almost understand what Luke is saying. He probably looked around, night after night and thought that it was a different band on stage.

But to come out on public and confirm that HE has LEFT TOTO is a big deal.

Luke, if you do read this site - I want to personally thank you for the music and memories over the years.
Toto are, and always have been a MAJOR part of my life. I have loved every minute of the journey.

I am devastated, yes. But have the upmost respect for the man. And really, he has become the link that has held the band together for SO long - he has the right to make this call.

This band has had to put up with so much shit over the years, it is unreal...
So LUKE - Thanks and good luck.

David has been caring for a sick family member for quite some time. I think a lot of fans are frustrated that he hasn't been able to transfer the duties to someone else.

I've heard that he and Simon are both plagued with a lot of pain, it's too bad.

At this point all I can say is thanks for all the memories, the great music, and you're truly a legend in the entertainment industry. Your fans and your peers will miss you. I FINALLY got to see you earlier this year after waiting since the first time I heard "Hold The Line" on the radio way back when. Good luck in all your futures, whether it be separate, or together. I know...I've thought about that too. It's hard to imagine that when I'm 40 none of my favorite bands will be touring. Unless of course we come up with some radical life extension exclusively for melodic rock artists. :lol:

That's why I'm trying to get to as many concerts as I can these days.

One way or another, Neal will be onstage performing when he is 90. Ross is already 90, so I don't see him being in the band in 2043.

I would imagine most of the bands will be dead by that point. I am not quite sure what it would be like to see a bunch of 80 year olds roaming the stage. I'm guessing Keith Richards will be the first to do so. On the other hand Tina Turner still looks pretty good and I think she is 67, so who knows.

I have been lucky enough to have been around Steve Lukather & Toto for the past 6 years. I have written 40 or so stories for www.stevelukather.net in that time period. I look at it as a fresh start instead of something ending. I think this next couple of years is going to be GREAT for Luke!!!!

I still think Luke is just burned out from the Toto thing, and I don't blame him.

I also agree that while it was good, it wasn't Toto without Dave and Mike. I actually really, really loved Sklar's playing on the one show I saw with him, but it wasn't "authentic," you know?

I think if a) Dave decides he wants to play some shows, b) Mike gets healthy again, and c) some promoter throws a bunch of money at Luke, you'll see the band again.

I understand what he's saying about "Hold The Line," but there's nothing that says they have to play it. They have to do some of their hits, obviously, but they have an extensive enough catalog where they don't have to play every single they've ever released. Moreover, anyone who is seeing the band live by this point is probably a pretty hardcore fan and won't care all that much if they do or don't play any one particular song.

I think it's the end for now, and I'm not banking on another Toto tour, but I also can see circumstances under which it would happen, albeit I'm sure it would be a much shorter run of a few European and Asian shows. Just hypothesizing...sometimes you get really burned out on something and then a few years later have some nostalgic feelings for it, I suppose...

Having a bit of time to reflect - all I am hoping for is that we get a send-off that the band deserves.

How about a one-night DVD recording with ALL the cats involved throughout the years.

Bring back Hungate, Paich, Mike P, Steve P, Joe Williams, Fergie, ALL The cats - Fuck, even let Byron sing a tune..

And you can leave off Hold the Line if you need!!!

That would be the bookend for me. One night - everyone on fire for one last goodbye...

After wading thru years of Azoffian newspeak from Journey, it's always refreshing to hear a bandleader cut out the publicist and tell it how it is.
It might be a better pill to swallow, but after laying his feelings out there, you simply have to respect his decision.
My only question is, what if "Ever Changing Times" and his solo career don't exactly relaunch as hoped?

In any event, the Soto/ Lukather team up is sure to be as good as Toto.

That's a little harsh.

But I would expect Luke's 'reunion' post in 2 or 3 years to include a comment about having to send his newborn kid to college someday. :lol:

I dunno...I think they all need 2 or so years away from the band to do their own thing, but it wouldn't surprise me if it wasn't permanent. It also wouldn't surprise me if it was, I suppose. I think part of that statement was just the end the speculation and hopefully get people to stop theorizing and wondering so both Luke and the fans can focus on the immediate future of Luke's album and the upcoming tour. Obviously there's still going to be discussion, but at least for the next two years I think the future is pretty clear, which is fine by me.
