Set List Suggestions

Postby LtVanish » Sun Aug 24, 2008 1:58 am

So I know these threads pop up from time to time, but I can't help but wish for Styx to really change up the set. I for one would like to see them put away 'Too Much Time on My Hands' and 'The Grand Illusion' for a while. I liked back in 2001 tour when they were playing 'Sing for the Day'(which I guess they busted out the other night in JY's absence) and 'Borrowed Time'. How come they can't play tunes like this more often? Styx has enough hit songs that they can rest even hit songs IMO. I have a dream set list of course as we all do, but we will never be able to hear one of those sets. But here is a realistic set that I wish we could hear.

Borrowed Time
Blue Collar Man
Rockin' The Paradise
Great White Hope
Shooz(should be a permenant staple in the Set List)
Lorelei
Moonlight Desires (Gowan Solo) or Fields of the Brave
Lights(not the unplugged version)
Suite Madame Blue (glad they are doing this one again)
Foolin' Yourself
Heavy Metal Poisoning
Everything is Cool or On My Way
Come Sail Away
Renegade

I think the band needs to really mix it up even more than they do. some other suggestions would be perhaps play an entire album from start to finish like "The Grand Illusion" song for song on the record live. Or maybe have Todd come up with a different melody to play, maybe one that is only like a 5 song melody, but play longer versions of the songs(This is what Toto has done in their sets for years and it works really well). I also don't know why Styx doesnt revisit some of the more recent albums, they are part of Styx history just as much as the old albums. I would be happy if they even busted out Little Suzie again, maybe dedicate it to JY's wife. :)

What do you all think?

Dayyyamnn STRAIGHT!!!! :D

They need to do more FUN songs. Some of those are taylor made for this line up.

They could also toss in "I'm Gonna Make You Feel It" and/or "22 Years"
“How did that sound?”

“Like Teddy Ruxbin hooked up to a car battery!”

You are most likely right, but it is still fun to talk about. If only the band would realize by changing up more often would get a lot of us hardcore fans going to a lot more shows. Do you think lazyness has anything to do with them not relearning/rearranging songs? I remember last winter I went to a show, Tommy mentioned it was like the first show they had done in over a month, so he said the sound might be rough because they hadn't praticed with each other, or to some degree. Do they stick with the same set most of the time just because it is easier for them? Would they not get any satisfaction playing other songs other than the same old 10 songs plus 4 others that they rotate in and out from time to time?

i'd love to hear Half Penny 2 Penny back in the set. they played it a few times in 99 and it smoked. I'd also love it if they did the entire electric version of MITW. Toss in Lights, Borrowed Time, Love in the Midnight, and Midnight Ride every once in a while, and that would be cool.

Shooz is a really high tune. Not sure Tommy could do that every night. I think Gowan should do "The Good Catches Up". Much more Styxish than the other one.
Actually, wish the band'd get off the road and record another album of NEW music. When they're just touring touring touring, it's no longer interesting to follow them.

I'd like to hear them do:

Do Things My Way
Mademoiselle
Shooz
Superstars
Everything is Cool
Brave New World
Best New Face

and of course First Time and Eddie (just kiddin')

Are you freakin kinding me? No "Too Much Time on My Hands"? You guys forget who goes to these shows. You got like maybe 4 hits in the entire setlist. I would want my money back.

That's the whole point. We get to set our set list. We've all heard TMTOMH 100 times. If you don't like these set lists don't pay to go see them. These set lists are not realistic, they're just what we hear. My bathroom break songs are TMTOMH and I leave when Renegade comes on to beat the crowd. It's not that I don't like them, I've just heard them enough.

I've stopped going to as many Styx concerts because nothing ever changes. I would like 1 or 2 shows a year where they dust off the obscure and different songs. They could put up a disclaimer and say they won't be playing CSA or Renegade.

Obviously leading off for Boston or Journey is not the time to play Fields of the Brave. You have to pick your spots.

Do you travel all around the world to see them? Because 1 to 2 shows a year wouldn't mean these shows would happen in your city. We hear the same argument with all bands. You gotta remember not every one has seen them '100s of times'. If they sprinkle in one or two songs per show that is really the best Styx could do....they are already stripping out many of the DDY songs as it is.

As a matter of fact I have traveled all over the US to see Styx, as have many of the board members. We don't have any arguments about real set lists and fantasy ones. The disagreement is this is a fantasy set list, not a realistic one and we're not constrained by monetary limits.

I don't see how my set list is that unrealistic. I traded Rockin' the Paradise for Too Much Time, seems not that bad to me. If you add Lady into my set, then they are pratically playing just as many hits as they are right now. If you want to see my dream set list, be ready NOT to hear Come Sail Away, Renegade, Blue Collar Man, Lorelei and Foolin' Yourself also. I really think it would be neat if they would try playing an entire album start to finish, and why not "The Grand Illusion" the most popular album, they would only have to add basically 2 songs they are not currently doing to pull this off, and I think it would make for something very interesting.

The whole problem is obviously that they don't have enough time to really throw in the obscurities.. I really wish they would too, but I can't blame them for primarily sticking to the hits. I'd really love to see them perform as the main act again, but that probably won't happen unless there's somehow a reunion with Dennis. I'm thinking they did somewhere between 18-20 songs on the "RTP" tour in '96, and now what is it, 11-13? I would toss out the medley and just do two extra songs. I personally find medleys to be a complete waste of time, but I can see where they are beneficial in letting casual fans know these deeper album cuts exist. Unfortunately, when it comes to touring, unless we're talking Springsteen, it all really is about the casual fan.
