JY isn't going to be pleased...he says in every single interview that Styx is a hard rock band because he wants to disown any of DDY's prog contributions.

Prog Contributions?

Please Falcon.. He wants to distance himself away from his Broadway and Mush factor, not his prog roots!

A lot of choices in that list don't go in my "Hard Rock" category. It's a very odd list..

I agree. Renegade would actually fit in this list.

hard rock begins with van halen, and continues from they. bands before are either rock, corporate rock, or heavy metal.
zeppelin maybe be the exception....

Deep Purple, Black Sabbath? (I don't consider these heavy metal - actually, I kinda think heavy metal is the one who is newer to the scene than hard rock)

I don't know, I would say if Queen is considered to be hard rock, than Styx should be as well.. I mean, Styx "can" be. Off the top of my head, I would say that I can think of more Styx songs that have a harder edge than Queen.. Granted, I only know the basics as far as Queen is concerned.

I don't think Van Halen is always hard rock either.. "Dance The Night Away"? "It's Not Enough"? "Jump"? I mean, why is it cool for certain bands to have a lighter side, and they still get the "hard rock" stamp, but not Styx?

I don't understand some peoples perception of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. A good portion of bands on that list are Pop Rock at best.

And even though Styx may have quite a few Hard Rock songs ( mostly JY's songs) I couldn't ever imagine them as Hard Rock as a classification.

And just to stir the hornets nest, the greatest Hard Rock song of all time is Back in Black.

No? then what? and anyone who mentions Bon Jovi gets a towel snap in the ass.

queen is NOT hard rock. IMO, the bands that were mentioned above (ac/dc, van halen, BON JOVI ;), as well as bands like aerosmith, Kiss, scorpions, Zep, etc are. i would consider Black Sabbath to be the first true heavy metal band.

I wish someone would nail down these categories - it seems as if everyone has a different definition.. but it is always good for debate and conversation.

My thoughts on above mentioned:

Queen - Rock
AC/DC - Hard Rock
Van Halen - Rock
Bon Jovi - Pop
Aerosmith - Blues based Rock
Kiss - Glam Rock
Scorpions - Hard Rock
Black Sabbath - Heavy Metal
Styx - Rock
Led Zeppelin - Blues Based Rock

Bon Jovi is harder rock than Styx - if you call them Pop then Styx is easy listening.

LOL

I'm thinking that Slipknot, Disturbed, Korn, Devildriver, Slayer, Lamb of God, Trivium, Hatebreed and about a thousand other bands would beg to differ about your assessment that "nothing is harder".

Easy Listening, that's funny - sorry just never liked Bon Jovi.. I have no real concrete reason upon which to base that dislike, but i just always thought they were a bit to slick.
