List some non-Toto, Toto-sounding songs

Postby newbiejr » Thu Oct 30, 2008 3:24 am

There are a lot of songs out there that have that 'Toto sound', whether it be due to one of the Toto vocalists or musicians being involved, or merely because the song has a similar sound.

What are some songs that would fit nicely on a Toto album?

My first offering:
Peter Friestedt- Where To Touch You
This song is from Peter's album called "LA Project II". It features Joseph Williams on lead and backing vocals. The song has a great hook and has great rythm section.
This would not be at all out of place on the Fahrenheit album. If you've never heard it, check it out.

Any other examples would be appreciated, as I'm always looking to discover Toto-sounding music.

"Work of art" DO NOT sound like TOTO!!!

Only a casual follower of the band can stay to this ridiculous comparison . Just a single song by them (WOA, Camelia) is reminiscent of the track "Lion" from the Isolation album. And that's it!!! The rest of their music is MILES AWAY from the real TOTO sound. I'm sorry to say this but, as a huge TOTO fan I am, I cannot accept this comparison in any way whatsoever.

Here you have some really TOTO-sounding songs:

Michael Jackson - For all time (demo version from the Dangerous era) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUswfxAkLME (THIS IS 100% PURE TOTO!)
Jim Horn - Rio Sunrise (THIS IS ALSO PURE TOTO!)
Cherie & Marie Curie - I just love the feeling
Third Matinee - Meanwhile - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c955FkD8vVs
Jon Anderson - Top of the world (feat. Toto) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0Vt82kwjqs
Richard Page - Whatever it takes (demo) & One more chance (demo) - http://www.forgottenmelodies.com/richar ... ttakes.mp3
Phil Collins - One more night or Something Happened on the way to heaven - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1oMFj5vMqgM , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOSkzigiQxI
David Williams - Look Away (though the lead vocals are horrible, the music is pure Toto)
Cheryl Lynn - All my lovin' - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grtMnf9ucnc
...

Listen to these ones and dare to tell me these aren't Toto-sounding tunes

I'm also always looking for REAL Toto-sounding music, so it would be great if some Toto fans could shed a light on this topic and share some of their hidden treasures. I've got some more, but I'd like to know your opinions and suggestions first :)

Thanx in advance!

Great thread!

I have a couple of tracks that come right to mind:

ELT - Dreams will Come True (Ft. Tommy Funderbunk). (Some definite Toto sound on this Japanese / LA Session related Album)

Here's s link:

Automatic - Pages - Odd Time Jeff Porcaro, playing a very 'high energy' tune, with Richard Page on Vocals:

Unknown Japanese Artist - I know Jeff, and I think Mike played on this, but a typical Shuffle tune, with a good guitar part too. Great song if you can get past the Japanese vocal.

oh dude...calm down...
yes, its not totally like toto. its more typical 80s AOR with a bit of Seventh one and Fahrenheit in it.

we're a bunch of die hard toto fans here too and the WOA record is something everyone of us really likes.
so I thought I'd take the chance to promote here once more.

As I mentioned in an earlier thread, the entire Toto band played on David Roberts- 1982 album called All Dressed Up. It's one of the all-time great AOR/Westcoast albums.

In the 80's I discovered a German Band named "Tokyo" with their 1982 2nd Album "Fasten Seat Belts" ... The sound was mostly kind'of TOTO - Style .. I enjoyed it very much - still got the LP - Sadly there is no CD of that one I think.

Tokyo - Same (1980)
Tokyo - Fasten Seat Belts (1982)
Tokyo - Westworld Encounter (1985)
Tokyo - Nippon 6 (1992)
Tokyo - San

Greetings from Germany!

Boz Scaggs' "Silk Degrees" is also where Toto began, so that's something worth checking out. All the songs were co-written by Paich and Jeff Porcaro and David Hungate were the rhythm section (Lukather played on the tour but not on the LP). Highly recommended.
