Has ClearChannel gone mad?

Postby MCM » Thu Nov 06, 2008 8:34 am

Last evening while driving in my car and listening to Pittsburgh's WDVE the DJ played "Man of Miracles".. I was so puzzled by it, I don't believe I have ever once in my life heard that on any radio station, regular radio or satellite.

Just thought it was odd.

Definitely not on a playlist but it can happen from time to time. Was there some kind of Styx feature going on at the time? When I was in high school I requested "R&R Feeling" and they actually played it! This was 1988... Only other obscure Wooden Nickel song I have heard is "A Day" and I played it myself :) back in 2003 or so. I kept a tape of it but I have no idea where my cassettes are these days. And I remember Zan calling me and requesting "Man In The Wilderness" and she seemed surprised that I actually played it and uploaded the clip on the station's website. Hard to believe I left radio 4 years ago. Do I miss the radio business? Nope.

I was in Cookeville working at 95.9. The station I worked for is now gone and sold shortly after I left for classic rock radio.

Man of Miracles

The played Snowblind recently here on the Classic Rock station in San Jose. And It was the first time I heard it on radio since the mid 80's. And I thought that was strange. But if they had played M.O.M. I probably would have crashed my car! Maybe the Pittsburgh DJ just likes the song and played it for himself! Although I have a DJ friend in Orlando and he said he can't play whatever he wants. It's mostly regulated.

Maybe the conglomo's will see that playing deep tracks, old obscure hits, a wider range of new artists and NEW stuff by classic artists might just be what takes to actually save radio.

How about giving some control back to the local on air talent??

Saying this as a free market guy... deregulating the airwaves ruined radio.

I agree, but I doubt that ClearChannel or whatever large entity owns a radio station cares about the delight someone may have if the DJ plays an obscure track. I think that's just the facts that we now have to live with, someone in an office on the other side of the country or wherever decides what we will hear based on who gave them the best "marketing gifts". Many radio stations are a mere shadow of their former selves.

I remember when I moved to Pgh about 20 some years ago DVE was "the shit" as far as a radio station, coming from a small town in the middle of nowhere, and as a music lover the radio stations were a big hit with me and we had so many to choose from. Now we hear the same songs from the same artists all the time. You can sometimes tell the time of day from the song they are playing. I now listen only during specific times as I like certain DJ's. The one initially mention as playing Man of Miracles wasn't even the regular drive time guy and may have been following his own rules.

I'm hit by radio ad men all the time and they tell me it's all focus group oriented. They judge how people respond to songs and you get the top 100, 200, or 1000 of those songs over and over again depending on the format. It's no different at Clear Channel or Cumulus. Get Satellite if you want to hear good music without interuption.

That is pretty much the way it is everywhere. Since I was the program director I made the decisions of what to play. And I didn't just pull out "A Day" in the middle of the work week. I played it on a Sat night where we would feature obscure tracks. I was filling in for the host and brought in some of my own tunes to play. But pretty much everything is pre-scheduled and the jocks rarely pick what they play. 90 % of radio stations don't even play CD's anymore, most of it is on hard drive and song selection is limited.
