Wow Yogi:
Where do I start with this one. Lets begin with the meant to be humorous thread that put STYX members in other bands, I think most people in here went along with the stereotypes that group members have been placed into and aside from your cop out answer of puttting Tommy in Night Ranger (gee that was a stretch, seeing that was his best friends former band), I wouldn't be ripping Abba, Poco or Barry Manilow any more than Nazareth (quick name their other hit besides love hurts....trick question there wasn't one) or hards rocks fictional response to the Partridge Family....Spinal Tap.
To your point of why none of us are ripping Dennis for releasing the same songs over and over, his new CD/DVD of a live performance featuring STYX songs and solo material hasn't even been released yet. And after he releases two or three of the same live concerts, I will be the first one on this website to agree with you. Especially if he does two or three versions of come sail away on the same CD....damn STYX wouldn't do something like that. As for his Ultimate Collection, that is his solo work which you can't seem to find anywhere else. In addition, Dennis claims in interviews that he was "outvoted" by other band members when it came to greatest hits packages, so what does that tell you.
I can certainly agree with your point that Glen Burtnik leaving STYX hurts a lot more than Dennis DeYoung...after all lets examine the history here: GLEN along with Chuck and John co-founded the band, he wrote Lady which was their first significant song to get radio attention, sacraficed a great deal of personal life not being at home much after the birth of his first born as STYX did 4 Wooden Nickel/6 A&M records toured the world many times over, sold out madison square garden on consecutive nights during the paradise tour, wrote and sang the groups only number one song, was in the band when it was voted in a gallup poll as the number one band in the world, wrote/sang/played keyboards/contributed masterful harmonies/produced (or co-produced) four albums that all went multi platinum back to back..."not even the beatles or stones ever did that" (JY from BTM), refused to put another guitarist in the band when Tommy quit just to carry on the name, participated in the groups very succesful reunion tour in 1996, put his own personal/professional plans on hold to tour again the next year to help Chuck with some financial troubles while he battles a life threatening disease.......
Now lets look at DENNIS' tenure with STYX, he joined for EOTC on an invite from GLEN and JY as Tommy's replacement, contributed three or four good songs, toured to support the album, came back when Chuck could no longer tour and stayed on the road for four years putting out a lot of energy and life to the shows, putting his personal life on hold and contributing a couple of good songs to the Cyclorama album....
Did I miss anything? History retold courtesy of JY or Tommy.....Sarcasam aside, I have the up most respect for Glen Burtnik the musician, inside and outside of STYX...I saw the guy pull off a brilliant Paul McCartney in his Beatlemania days. But in all fairness to him, you cannot compare the two. If Tommy left, I would say yes, you have an honest historical perspective there. Mr Burtnik, like Mr DeYoung several years before him found out, there are a lot of sacrafices that you have to make in that business.
No Barry Manilow or ABBA comparison can wipe out or change this man's contribution to the history of this band, and as for what he could do in the future in the right environment with this band, unfortunately we may never know.
