I didn't even read the thread. I just read the title. And I'm saying "Journey...hands down" - at least they're making an EFFORT to put forth quality new music....and somewhat sound like their most popular sound....Styx...is just....Tommy and JY makin a buck..

and I like styx.

I am not sure if George would have been the standout star in any band. His voice and guitar playing abilities were only pretty good, not great. I always felt the Beatles were a perfect fit for him. And it did give him a chance to bring out his best talents.

Sorry! This topic has strayed far away from the original intent!

IMO, george was always eclipsed by the genius of John & Paul. perhaps the competition pushed him to become a better song writer- who knows. i always liked his voice, and no, he's certainly not eric clapton, but his guitar playing fit in well with the beatles. If he was in a band with less talented musicians, he prob would have stood out more. but the guy did ok for himself! LOL ;)

yeah, the topic has strayed, but the beatles are much more interesting to talk about than journey ;)

It seemed as though you were being mean in your prior post.
I'm sorry if I read it wrongly stmonkeys.

The other day a friend sent me the Dennis version of Boat On The River
and then the original with the group.
I really liked them both but for me I think Tommy's was a bit stronger.
Does the band still play this one?, it's great song.

I thought Dennis did fairly well (I wish the man would play the accordion more). Tommy's rendition is better, but I think that has to do more with it being complete with the band. The mandolin is a great addition to the song. It is one of my two favorite Tommy songs. I believe they used to perform in concert, but I don't think they do anymore.

no prob! all is forgiven ;)

the band used to do part of BOTR when they reunited in 97, and again on the 99-2000 tours, but i haven't heard it done recently or in its entirety. it was odd hearing dennis sing it- but i liked it. of course, i prefer tommy's. perhaps one day it will creep back into the set list, but i wouldn't hold my breath. at least they dusted off part of Man In the Wilderness. :D

I agree with Sadie here on all counts. It was odd hearing Dennis sing this song solo, but, of course, he could sing the phone book and sound good. :D That song hit on all cylinders, in my view, with the Classic lineup -- the accordion and the mandolin, plus the Tommy/DDY harmonies were just off-the-hook good. It was such a different song for Styx to perform, but, it worked! It is one of my favorites as well.

(And it looks like we have officially shot this thread to hell -- or to a better place -- depending on your point of view. Sorry Toph!)

I used to despise BotR for years, until I witnessed it being performed in Germany/Switzerland. Ironically, that song is one of their absolute favorites over there and to experience the crowd singing along to every word with such gusto and passion made me appreciate it much more than I ever did.

Toph wrote:OK - since people are always saying that Journey and Styx are similar in story. Compare each of the albums. Which one do you like better

Infinity vs. The Grand Illusion
Evolution vs. Pieces of Eight
Departure vs. Cornerstone
Escape vs. Paradise Theatre
Frontiers vs. Kilroy Was Here

After that the timeframe of album releases diverges - hard to compare Raised On Radio with Edge of The Century since they were 4 years apart.

hard to compare..
infinity was classic AOR ..Grand Illusion powerful Rock...come sail away top 10 song of classic Rock tunes...
infinty was pure bliss all the way through....
and the others cant compare too different from each other... STYX best is equinox Journey best Infinity... I love the ROLIE era of Journey is my favorite.
and favorite styx song is crystal ball. My Journey favorite is feeling that way anytime...

I've been struggling with trying to make a comparison, but I simply can't. They're like apples and oranges to me. I like them for different reasons (Styx, Journey), so to try to compare them is pointless. :::shrug:::

Yeah, that clip was out of the film "Let it Be". I like the solo section better here. You can hear they're having fun and throughout a lot of Let it Be, it's apparent that they were not having fun.. .or at least everyone but Paul wasn't having fun. The part that drives me nuts is the editing of the film. As an example, in this clip John's playing high notes on the slide VISUALLY but they're low notes being heard. That movie has some of THE worst editing I've ever seen.

AND The Beatles are THE most interesting band to talk about ! :)
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.
