Styx/REO/.38 Special in 2009

Postby RumTumJM » Sun Jan 18, 2009 4:58 pm

I just realized that this has not been posted.

Apparently REO Speedwagon revealed a month or so ago that they will be touring this summer (I think May-July-ish) with Styx & .38 Special.

Granted this information was confirmed by a family member of bassist Bruce Hall, who frequently posts on the message board on his site. Therefore, I consider it to be very accurate.

I wonder if those rumored Styx/REO/Night Ranger dates are for another point in the summer?

I think those Styx/REO/Night Ranger rumours were for last summer. Night Ranger did do a few shows with each of those bands I believe.

This was also confirmed by one of the radio stations in Columbus Ohio, REO/Styx/.38 Special at the time they said no dates were confirmed yet. It seems that pretty reliable sources are confirming this line up.

I heard about a few dates in the Midwest with Styx & Night Ranger. I guess they're not confirmed yet or they're just "Rumours in the Air". LOL

I'm starting to think it will be Styx/REO for most of the summer with .38 Special for part and Night Ranger for the other part (the weekend shows?).

It seems like the big surprise will be weather or not you will see .38 Special or Night Ranger with them.

Now are you going to agree they are just touring for the money or is this some big new world tour?
Is this all Styx has left ?
Just summer after summer chase REO around and find a 3rd partner?
This is real sad..

Either way, I'll pass as I said in the other thread. Styx + REO = no money from me. Kevin Cronin makes me want to claw my eyeballs out.

Many people seem adamant about going to see them if REO is there, since you've all seen that gig before.

But for a first time viewer, is it all that bad of a show?

It's not really, the sets are much shorter than I would like, but last time I saw REO (two summers ago) they did sound good.

Of course they're touring for the money. That's what bands do. That's their business. There's no money in albums anymore (unfortuntately). Why is this such a bad thing?

"Is this all Styx has left?"

Well, they put out Cyclorama and you griped. They put out a covers album and you griped... What are they supposed to do to make you happy other than bring Dennis back?

Personally, I think it's pretty cool that they can still work. My problem is with REO. I WON'T go to see those shows.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

Agreeing with Bry here. There are many dinosaur bands who do not get the opportunity to play anything much anymore and would probably love to do so. A few can get club dates, but those probably do not pay much.

Styx, REO and a few other lucky bands can do very well for themselves on this circuit.

How many "first time viewers" are left?

REO and Styx are two of my all-time favorites, but I've seen them together so many times it makes me think...been there done that. Wish they'd mix it up a bit.

Styx And REO 2009

Postby aedstrom » Tue Jan 20, 2009 12:05 pm

I was talking with Bryan Hitt (REO Drummer) at NAMM in Anaheim on Saturday. He's a very nice nice guy! He said they were going to do a lot of dates with Styx in 2009. Dave Amato was right there too saying the same thing.

...so I think it's true that they're doing a significant tour together.

I wasn't thinking while talking with the guys from REO or I would have done some video. I did do some video later on with the Tommy Shaw and Jack Blades http://community.totalcontrolaudio.com/ ... 60687.html

*raises hand* But in all seriousness, I have yet to see Styx by themselves yet, so a companion concert with [almost] anyone would be even cooler for a first timer.

I wish I could have seen them with Boston last year, but on the date they came closest to my town I was on a trip and missed it.

I've never seen REO Speedwagon in concert before so I'm looking forward to it. Styx is now one of my favorite live acts, and .38 Special does a great show as well, so this should be a fun tour!

So what's with all the REO-bashing? Is it just that they have too many ballads? Kevin's singing style?

Mostly Kevin's talking between songs. If he would just shut up and sing, it wouldn't be bad at all.

KC does talk a lot, but don't worry REO puts on one hell of a show. You will enjoy the show. KC just always has to tell some goofy story about certain things, they get annoying sometimes because he repeats the same shit at every show.

I was at a Styx/REO show a few years back at the Gwinett Arena (near Atlanta, GA). Styx was headlining. KC talked so much that REO didn't get to play their last song! He was motioning to the rest of the band to play another song while the crew was motioning them off stage, since they had already gone over their time limit. KC looked pissed, slammed his guitar on the stage, went to the mike, scratched his head, and said "Thank you, goodnight," and left. He does need to keep those intros short!

I've been looking into this a bit more and the pairing of Styx with REO for a summer tour does seem to be very logical. Both bands finish their spring tours on the same exact date - April 25. Then the bands don't have anything scheduled until the fall, of course leaving the summer months open tour a package tour.

Night Ranger and 38 Special on the other hand have a few of dates scattered throughout the summer, so it almost seems unlikely that either of them will be part of the Styx/REO tour.

That's just my guess work, though. I do think they will be bringing a long a 3rd band, but I'm just not convinced that it's 38. We'll see!

I was checking out the live album that Styx/REO put out back in '01 and both bands played a ten song set. When there is a 3rd band involved how is the set list changed? Does each act play a fewer amount of songs? Also since REO and Styx did a few 'Jam' versions of their songs at the end of that concert, how does a third wheel affect that? Just curious, because as I've said I've never been to concerts like these before.

The Styx/REO live CD from '01 did not inlcude the full Styx set (not sure about REO). I'm not sure which Styx songs are missing (I know at least "Everything is Cool" and "Come Sail Away" are). The jam thing does not always happen. I didn't happen when I saw them a few years ago. i was actually hoping to see it too.

I can now say for certain that .38 Special with Styx & REO is certain. Also, there is a REALLY good chance for some Night Ranger dates.

When is it likely that they'll officially announce it? After they are done their respective tours in April, or will it likely just be random?

I would guess that an announcement will come this month. It depends on when the tour actually starts.

Of course!!

I'll admit that it's not a groundbreaking trio of bands, but Styx shows are incredibly enjoyable for me both as a photographer and as a fan, and I've yet to see REO live so I'm pretty excited about it. I'm a concert junkie, what can I say.
