With an album as moody and dark as KOD, some funk-levity was def. in order.
Then again, maybe that would defeat the whole point.
brandonpfn wrote:What should've definitely been on the album was 'On The Run'. I believe it was recorded, but the band wasn't happy with the 'take' they got in the studio...Shame..
WalrusOct9 wrote:I didn't know this song wasn't on some releases of KoD (it was on mine). Not really a high point in the Toto canon though...given the band didn't even write it, I kind of wondered how they ended up recording it. I imagine there was pressure on the band to have a 'single' but that song certainly wasn't going to be it, no matter how you slice it.
WalrusOct9 wrote:Although the song "Kingdom Of Desire" (Also written by Danny Kortchmar) worked so well maybe they gave him the benefit of the doubt and recorded another one of his songs. Although considering "On The Run" was sitting in the vault at the time, I wonder why they recorded (for the first time ever?) other people's songs for an album.

Great album, just one more uptempo track would take it over the top for me.
I'd have no problem if TOTO were to soldiers on with just Luke at the mic.

Ditto... ECT sounded just as much like Toto as FiB

That is because Luke has been a major force in their lead and background vocals for 30 years....I truly believe he could do a Toto album tomorrow and we would all LOVE it...I think he is just exploring other musical paths a bit as he has every right too.....and ECT was every bit as good as FIB to me.....
Just my opinion.......JV

Agreed. Well actually, not all the way... ECT was better than FIB for me. The title track, The Letting Go, New World, Jammin With Jesus, I Am, Stab In The Back, How Many Zeros, The Truth... all amazing. Only song I'm not crazy about on the whole thing is Tell Me What You Want From Me. It's not a bad song at all, but I get this weird feeling that the verse sounds eerily similar to a Spice Girls song. I know Luke's proud of that one since he wrote it with his son and all, but I woulda preferred hearing another song from the album when I caught him back in August.

Luke is the man...Just a wealth of talent that guy is, humble in his playing, and very funny fucker as well. I would kill to get a chance to jam with the man, but then I think a few others are in line, in front of me. Personally, I thought FIB was an incredible effort by the band...ECT is definitely a Luke album, and different. Better? I don't know... I think that's a matter of taste. There are some great tracks though, and Randy Goodrum has always been a great writing partner for him (I'll be over you, Until the End of time, Second Chance, etc etc etc). I'm just glad the guy continues to make music. He could piss on an track and I'll at least have to hear it. ECT is one of his best efforts. His son is very talented as well. Check out his material on iTunes, great production, hooks, and lyrics with a ton of attitude. I look forward Luke's next solo or group project. Trev's as well.
WalrusOct9 wrote:I liked both FIB and ECT but I'd have to give the edge to FIB, it just rocked a little more.
I kind of expected Luke's solo LP to be a more uptempo, straight guitar-rock record, but it was a little too loaded with ballads and mid-tempo tracks. I like all the tracks individually, but about mid-way through the album I couldn't help but yearn for something a little more uptempo. It's a solo album, so it just lacked the diversity that I love about all the Toto records. It's easy to say that Luke could've turned ECT into a Toto album, but they're really two separate entities, even though stylistically a few of the ECT songs could've easily fit on the last Toto LP.
