Well, to be more to the point: JY is somewhat of the glue in the harmonies (my opinion). One of the Styx trademarks is that three part thing. Their voices blended well.

I'm not going to say if Dennis said anything or not vis a vie JY ... you'll just have to wait ... I'm not going to spoil any more.

I also am impressed with your ability to pick up the phone and ask him to do it again. Not sure I could have done that.

When faced with disaster, you either suck it up and move on and claim defeat, or have A LOT of humility, apologize, and hope you get a second chance. I am lucky I got that second chance. At the end of the day, we're all human and unfortunately, there are times when things go wrong.

I mean, even Dennis and I joked about it in the second interview at times.

Dennis joking in an interview, surely that couldn't have happened.

I have no idea how he got his power. Since they were both against DDY's demands I guess that kind of put them on equal ground, and there a few other speculations I could put forward about it, but then again they are just speculations so they're not really relevant.

I'll take a stab at this. JY was there from the very beginning of the band. I believe it was HIS band for a while, and DDY joined later. Obviously as time went on it became apparent that most of their success was due to DDY and later TS...so his contribution to the band's success was getting smaller, and he started getting understandably bitter.

Combine that with a very combative and vindictive personality (and that's not just my opinion, many others have said this too) and you have a guy who's approaching 60 who is trying to make it look like HE was the driving force behind the band all those years. I have never seen a band take such a figurative dump on their own legacy like Styx has since JY became the alpha male.

JY wasn't there from the beginning, but if you look at the Wooden Nickel records you can see that he was far more involved creatively than he was in the later years. That, and his tunes were [I believe] more popular, that is until Lady became a hit. On Crystal Ball because Dennis was going through his breakdown I think JY had a bigger influence on Tommy, but on the later albums [and Tommy said something to this effect in Sterlings book] he said that he was inspired by Dennis when writing his songs. When those two became the leaders of the groups success, he lost a lot of creative control and someone to influence so he became quite p.o.

I think he was glad when the group split because Dennis had once again "ruined" Styx and Tommy was wild on drugs. When his solo career tanked, he rejoined Styx and put up with DDY's demands until Tommy came back, and came back clean. Tommy, I think feeling regret from his days on drugs, and when he abandoned Styx for Damn Yankees, kind of wanted to make things up to JY [who had been on his side when Dennis had really started taking control] as much as possible, and I think Jy's forgiving him is what gave him a good standing in the band once Dennis was outsted.

Maybe to this day, because JY took him back, Tommy feels inclined to listen to JY's suggestions. It's JY that says there will be no new material, and it's JY who has said the most often that Dennis will NOT be allowed back in Styx. Even IF Tommy would like Dennis back, if he is still inclined to listen to JY than he will probably follow his band-mates lead.

The spoutee is, and has been, a troll here before. No feeding rules should apply.

Bugsy

don't call me a troll, this is a forum for discussion about Styx and Styx accessories. What I have presented is a fact about Styx, nothing trollish about that.
