This bulletin board is now a class project

Postby I Stumble In » Wed Mar 04, 2009 1:27 am

I am currently taking a sociology class, and my paper this week has to deal with bulletin boards and if they constitute a "social group" from a sociological perspective. To be considered a group it must have 4 characterisitcs:
1. Members share a common interest (which is Styx in this case)
2. Members interact with one another (I said interact - not attck Froy)
3. Members share rights and obligations of membership (let's see - who's been banned for not following common decency rules...)
4. Members share a sense of belonging and identity (not sure if Froy feels like he belongs - but we all like the guy - even with his DDY man crush)
So I have to say to all - thanks for the help on this paper. I am going through different discussion posts to observe the interaction. Don't worry - I am not going to name any names - or even give examples of the posts.

well it certainly isn't a 'Class Act'
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

Stumble,

I would definitely say this is a social group. Many people in here have not only met here, but have met each other through here or similar boards. Personally, I have met Suite, Ash, Bugsy and Zan outside of here because of this group. Without it, we would heve never have met. I have also met a number of other people in other BB's. In fact, I met my fiance through a friend in a BB that the 3 of us frequented. Each person in here over time develops their own personna the we all interact with based on their positions. Over time, you get to know someone based on the ongoing interaction between the collective group.

Lastly, Froy has been banned before, but he was let back in and told to be good. Believe it or not as assanine as it may be, he is being good. But he is still myopic in his views.
